Ok, I am a huge procrastinator, so I am going to pull an internet move and state "inb4 procrastinator".

Now, I am in college and I know many college students know they have to take some classes they wouldn't because they want a degree in some field and it requires a random/boring class.

So, I am taking Human Relations. So far, I know everything the teacher is talking about. It's common sense stuff. The problem? The actions/people's attitudes have names. Don't understand what I mean? Let me give you an example:

We determine how someone acts. We would call this action observing. WRONG. The 'proper' term would be 'Transactional analysis'. They put name tags on these terms and my teacher goes for textbook terms. He won't give partial credit or any credit at all if you answered each term how we would.

The problem, that I need help with, is that we have a test tomorrow on 4 chapters. Each chapter is about 50-60 pages of nothing but single-spaced, size 10 font, on 10.5 x 8 inch pages. See my dilemma?

Well, I am a self-proclaimed procrastinator, so last time we had a test; I stayed up all night and read every chapter. I failed the test #-o The test is random crap that I either forgot or confused with other terms. The questions were random situations and you wrote down the correct term for what could fix the situation. 50 questions of that.

So, here I am. I need to read 200+ pages, the test is tomorrow, and I fear failure again. What do I do? :?

inb4 should have studied earlier.

I still would have problems with terms.

Edit: I was really good in high school. I got A's and never studied for a test in my life. I am hitting the books now, sort of, and I am not accustomed to failure. Halp.

Skim, skim, skim.

Try to understand the things you don't understand first, leave the ones you have a general idea on first and go from there. The brain can only retain so much memory before it shuts off completely and fails to register any memory. Good luck.

I don't think there's much else you can do exept sleep, that will give you clearer ideas.

A trick not to do this, is to go to the library after classes. It works with me, as I'm a procrastinator as well. If I come home after class to study, I know I won't do it till close to when I'm going to bed, if I do at all, since sometimes I have free periods in the morning/afternoons the day after, and they're not long enough most of the time.

Skim fast until you hit terms/ideas you need to know. Write em down every time you think something's important and then cram like crazy over your notes.

Yeah, I'm also a fellow (currently) procrastinating undergrad.

Take it like a man!

Study next time, bub.

Nahh. Is your book bolded terms? If so I'd study those first, get those down. If not, find terms, highlight them, then study them. Maybe there are some online study help things for that class, but I don't know, human relations is a [developmentally delayed]ed course.

I suck at studying. \<img src=/' />

It does have italicized terms, so I could mostly look out for those, but sometimes he goes over things that were in between those.

The library idea is good. I get out at 1pm after my early classes, so I could stay for a couple hours after since I don't do anything.

Human Relations is [developmentally delayed]ed, but I need it for my Computer Science degree. ;)

I'd skim over and get a general idea. Just don't deprive yourself of sleep.

I am worried about that. I tend to get anxious and stay up all night anyways (when it comes to having something the next day or something on my mind).

You're screwed mate.

Isn't there some phrase or something that notes at how you should have learned your lesson the first time? I know it's on the tip of my tongue...

Dang man, you put yourself in quite a bind.

well, study over material that is often repeated throughout the chapter, the stuff that's bolded, italicized, etc.

Or cheat.

Depends, lol. I ran up to the store and bought notecards. I plan on writing the italicized words down and writing their meaning for memory.

I've never cheated in my life. I always feel wrong when the thought comes to mind.

Here's my advice.

Instead of being on this forum at the dead of night when you're supposed to be studying asking for tips because you're screwed, either:

-study like crazy

-go sleep

There's nothing else to it, you left it last minute and it's not our problem to hold your hand until the test comes :|

I was expecting tips on studying and retaining information. No hand holding necessary.

It's almost 12am and I finished 1 chapter in 1 and a half hours. Pretty good considering I wrote down a lot of stuff on note cards. I plan on pulling an all nighter, going to my first few classes, and then studying my notecards before the test.

I am logging on TIF every time my brain begins to fry to see new posts. ;)

The odd all-nighter doesn't actually hurt a great deal. You'd be amazed how many people are still in libraries at 1am studying or completing coursework because they've put it off until the last night. Take some Red Bull to stop you turning off. Don't make it a regular occurrence though, or you will burn out eventually.

My only study tip would be to get a highlighter, or a pen and ruler, and just make the points that are important stick out from the page. Then write them out again on a notepad and see how many short notes you can add to it, or if you're a visual learner, make a mind map or something. It helps put the information in the mind and it also tests how much you can actually remember so you can tell where you're weak.

But yeah, should really have done this a week ago.

In Dutch they say that even a donkey doesn't bump the same stone twice. Apparently, if a donkey hits a stone with his front foot, he wont hit it again with his rear foot.

In English I only know of once bitten, twice shy. And of course fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Anyway, all this to say you should have known better :<img src=:' />. Still, in such a situation the only thing you can do is skim and get a sense of the structure of your course. If you have so little time, learn the table of contents. It will give you a good general idea and it will help you to see the connections between different chapters in the course. Still, make sure you get enough sleep. It's no use working the night through, it will only get you more nervous, dead tired and left with nothing but very unclear thoughts.

Heh, all I gotta say is welcome to college. "never studying for a high school test in my life" really isn't that impressive considering high schools these days. I'm a 4th year in college and I have a friend who STILL says that to me and refuses to study for a test until the night before. I say "Hey Ryan, did you make flashcards for the Immunology final on 730 pages of text and 50 hours of lecture?" he replies "Lol, dude I never study that early for tests, never have never will".

My advice? In all honesty mentally forget about what high school tests were like. Having the false mindset that one day of studying can get you something besides an F can be very damaging. Oh, and if you think your test was hard... just wait until finals! \<img src=/' />

Study for about 10-15 minutes, then take a five-minute break. This helps your brain retain information. :D

Also, background music/noise helps concentration.

So, basically Earthysun is Jesus's only son.

Agree with this 100%

I did the whole "never study for a test" in High school, got into university just fine. THEN the oxford law reading list hit me square in the face and I knew then I had to seriously change my work ethic.

I write this post after revising for 8 hours today, as I have done for the past week, for ONE 3 hour contract law exam, I still have hundreds of case names to memorise and points of law to comprehend. Get good at studying and realise that these tests have so much more subject matter that you physically cannot get it all into your mind the night before.

Welcome to University :)

As your teacher may have said, the best way to study is a little bit each night. You have 25 minutes to go over your lecture that you had that day, don't you? Use this test as a wake-up call that it's not lay around and not study time anymore. As for what you can do for this test, I would recommend (as stated before) skimming through the chapters. Look at main points at the end of the chapters and use the study questions for small amounts of help too. If there happens to be any boldface words, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THEM because they are the most important terms in the chapter. Finally, use common sense. It's a simple bit of advice, but it works. If it's multiple choice, eliminate all wrong answers and you'll find yourself in a much easier boat.
