Hopefully, this is the start of something new.

Congratulations Obama!

"A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do"

[Currently playing: K1ll L1f3]

This thread is depressing. All the best to Obama, he's got a lot of expectations to meet.

One correction though: he's not a socialist, he's simply less right-winged than the average republican. But I guess that would be the definition of American socialism. But I can't deny that most Europeans are relieved to see a Democrat in the White House, even if McCain wasn't a replica of Bush.

Oh, and someone talked about the American sacrifices in the World War. On a personal level, yes, many soldiers sacrificed their lives, families were torn. On a bigger economical and political level, WW 2 was the best thing that happened to America.

Been following the election all night and all I can say is congratulations. You really needed this.

Sure as crap we did. Bush's word doesn't count for anything in Europe, as I'm sure you've witnessed.

Already today my classmates have said Obama's going to get shot. Nobody would dare say that in America, it seems. Here's hoping that he's safe.

you are right.

Even in America with our "1st Amendment", we cant just say whatever we want. Most likely if someone even joked about saying the president would be shot, roughly 20 CIA agents would pop out of nowhere and swarm him.

In reality, if it was posted on blogs/websites and stuff people would honestly track you down, I think.

Ah, a bad day indeed.

Did the democrats [bleep] this much when George got the double term?

I'm glad Obama won, I wasn't really expecting him to lose.

I'm shocked though as I read through this topic, the amount of reported posts and racist comments removed is completely unacceptable.

Really I'm disappointed.

I think people are going to be all wrong, most people that don't want him are racist or think he's going to go terrorist style on us but, He is going to make a good president IMO

This actually came as a good surprise to me. In history when black people ran for government positions people would lie to the people asking who they were going to vote for to not seem racist.

Maybe this is saying the majority of Americans are finally not racist. Besides it's not about the color of their skin, or their religion. It's about if they have a strength to lead. I think America can use this change. If he is muslim that's even better, America can use that change too.

I remember there being at least half a dozen topics about how terrible it was that raged on for about two weeks afterward.

How much can he screw it up?

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

What I'm scared about is what he will be able to do with a senate and house majority. I really don't like the "Freedom of Choice Act". It basically lifts the partial abortion ban, and invalidates most of the state bans and regulations on abortion. What about the choice of the baby?

And how is "redistributing the wealth" not socialism? Dictionary.com says it is "a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole." Condensed, it says that the production and distribution of wealth should be controlled by a central source, aka the government.

Obama won, Hooray for Socialism in America! -.-

All I'm saying on the subject.

Do you even know what socialism is?!?

And capitalism is a terrible, unjustifiable system.

Hey.

I know, it hasn't worked at all.

Listen, despite its problems, it's really the best we got in our current situation.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Sweet. We have another Jimmy Carter...

At least in two years Republicans will probably take back a good chunk of Congress and maybe even the White House in four years once people start realizing what "change" actually means.

On the other hand, I'm a poor college student who doesn't pay taxes, so I'll get some "tax cuts" (aka welfare). Maybe I should just quit my job and let Obama "redistribute the wealth" down to me.

He isn't nationalising the means of production, or the distribution of land. If anything the bail out was closer to socialism than anything Obama is advocating. Taxing the wealthy more to pay for improvements to those less fortunate is the cornerstone of most tax systems. All governments redistribute wealth in one way or another, Bush gave to the wealthy and hoped it would trickle down, Obama is building from the bottom. America will still be a capitalist nation.

You know what drives me nuts? People treat W. like he's mentally [developmentally delayed]ed. And so you see all of those dumb flash adds showing him flopping around like a [developmentally delayed], and it says "His IQ is 125! Are you smarter than Bush?" Yet 125 is actually quite intelligent. And already they now show Obama looking all statesmanlike and intelligent, and it says "His IQ is 124, are you smarter than Obama?" They give Bush the higher IQ in those adds and call him [developmentally delayed]ed, give Obama the lower IQ and make him look smart. Media bias, anyone?

True, and I'm not saying that America will become a full-blown socialist nation. It will just have a bit more socialist tendances and laws. Very true, that all taxing is "distribution of wealth". But the president-elect actually saying that he wants to redistribute wealth, instead of it being inferred, is what scares me. Just think for a minute about this, and some other things that Barack Obama has said. The media would go ballistic if Bush said something like that. The media bias is terrible, really.

Bingo. This. Capitalist free market >< socialism. At most, you could call Obama an American Socialst, and even at that, I'm sure there are finer examples available.

I don't get it. What's scary about redistributing the wealth if it's going to be done by taxing the rich more than the poor? It's not like he's going to pull up a small army of civil servants knocking on people's doors to remove their secret stashes of money to hand them out to the poor, is it?

I think it's high time the US pulls together some form of social security. It can be done, has been done by many countries before, without invading anybody's liberty or damaging their standard of life. Quite the contrary.

Although I never liked him..... I do feel Bush got unfair treatment from the media, most of his 'bushisms' are down to the fct he is Dyslexic, and this has been translated as him being a bit on he dim side.... which is not true, he was cleaver enough to be elected president

he was cleaver enough to be elected president

Ouch.

Heh that aside, why should it matter if he's dyslexic? If it would've mattered he should've have run in the first place, and you shouldn't have voted him.

All you "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" people really have no idea what it's like do you?

I'm not saying you're like this.. but you seem to have a problem with the idea of "redistributing" the wealth. What's the issue here? I'm not poor, but not rich either.. and I'd happily vote for higher taxes, even up to like 70% income tax to be honest, because I'm not so callous that I'm going to put my own money before the health and education of the people who have, by no fault of their own, been born into a poor family. You really want a great nation? Equality comes first.
