Player moderator abusing his powers.

So, I was fishing a bit in Edegville...As I walked back to the bank to store my recently caught goods, I came across a player moderator threatening a young man for something he might do..

 

 

 

The conversation as from what I could tell whilst eavesdropping was that the young man was having a bit of an argument with another player, he kept a level head and didn't break any rules..the argument ended abruptly probably due to the better sense of adding one another to each others ignore list.

 

After 2 minuets had gone by..well something like this happened.

 

 

 

Young man1: "Ok, you know what.. I don't feel like talking about this"

 

young man2: "whatever dude"

 

a minuet or two passes

 

Moderator: "Either you guys stop arguing or your getting muted"

 

me: "use some sense..they're not arguing -.- "

 

Moderator: "you be quiet to, or your getting a mute"

 

At this point the two players step in at my defense...moments later I get a private message from the first young man saying "the idiot just muted me...do me a favor and report him with me, eh?"

 

 

 

That altercation occured more than a week ago...today, I got an email from jagex ( :thumbsup: ) apologizing for the bad choice in this person as a moderator...and stripped him of his privileges.

The inconsistency is that the player, whom was allegedly muted, was still able to PM you. Didn't know that was a feature of QuickChat.

 

 

 

But at any rate, it's good that he was removed from power. Can't have irresponsible folk like that around.

I was also wondering about the first thing, however you two are wrong about the second flaw.

 

 

 

Jagex will occasionally send you a message to your message box(whatever you call it) if they have taken action against someone you have reported.

 

 

 

They wont ever send a message to your email address however.

Plus you don't know the whole story; perhaps he had been hacked, or a family member got on his account. I've met tons of friendly, helpful mods. It would be a lot easier to make a judgment about this if you actually said what happened in the 1-2 minutes. It's very easy to call mod abuse when mutes are involved, not so much if it's more than just your word we are going on.

OK, simple miscommunication about the email. I assumed the current definition of any mail sent through SMTP; you used it as 'any electronic communication'. I don't want to harass you, but perhaps you could shed some light on exactly how the muted person PMed you with "the idiot just muted me...do me a favor and report him with me, eh?". And it would appear that you are posting a rant about some player moderator that you believe unfairly temporarily muted someone, albeit with a slightly fishy smell, although it could still be valid.

Email, outdated dictionary definition: "any method of creating, transmitting, or storing primarily text-based human communications with digital communications systems". That means this post is email, every update Jagex posts on Runescape.com is email, shopping online is 'email'. Email nowdays is considered to be SMTP, with a specific inbox, using the standard email routing ports and protocols like SMTP or IMAP. I can understand the confusion, but there's no reason to flame me for it if that is truly what you meant.

Common sense? I went off the definition of email used in virtually all communication today, including by Jagex themselves. Quote from http://www.runescape.com/kbase/viewarticle.ws?article_id=2087: "We never send emails to players.". Jagex is obviously referring to SMTP mail using standard email procedures, and defining that as seperate from the in game inbox that they use for sending messages, not emails, to players. Therefore, going off of what virtually all of the world, including the company in question, uses is not displaying a lack of common sense; in fact, quite the opposite.

I didn't directly state you did; obviously that wouldn't be true. My statement of 'not needing to post a rant every time you find someone you believe to be acting outside of the rules' is the extreme version of what I believe you were doing; writing a rant for insignificant, player specific issues, something that is (questionably) against tip.it rules, and really isn't worth ranting about given all the unknowns. And what's with the random 'grow up' tacked onto the end? Telling someone that their rant might not be worth posting, in a polite manor, isn't acting immaturely.

Flaming a person trying to help you doesn't really help, especially when your trying to take cheap shots. Are you a player moderator? Because if so, you would have read the player moderator section of the KB:

 

In extreme cases of the Rules of Conduct being broken, Player Moderators also have the option to mute players for 48 hours. To avoid the possibility of this power being abused, each mute will be checked by a member of Jagex staff as soon as possible to ensure that each action taken by a Player Moderator is completely correct.

 

If he's reporting people for nothing, you can bet he's going to lose that silver crown very quickly.

I'm going to say well done on giving that pompous [wagon] a taste of his own bile, however I would really love to see a screen shot of the message Jagex sent you about the action taken against the moderator, just to authenticate your story. ;)

 

 

 

I've also had trouble with a moderator once, I got muted for a completely unrealistic reason and within half an hour someone at Jagex HQ removed it, thankfully.

Jagex Reveiws all report before going through with them. If the player was muted by a moderator who has abused his powers, he/she would have not been muted at all in the first place.

No, you are immediately muted - but Jagex WILL review EACH and EVERY mute, and if it is unfair they will remove it and take action against the moderator, usually quickly. I had an unfair mutes lifted ~20 minutes after it began.
