January 14, 200917 yr As we all know, the recent update caused certain words to not be starred out in text anymore, these words of course, are all allowed in PG13 movies, and other content of the rating. What I would like to discuss about, is if this is a big "I told you so" from Jagex. Recently there has been an issue about how many underaged players have been coming to the game to play, while the larger population of players who are at, or above the age, have been complaining. Basically what I am getting at is that Jagex is proving to us that they aren't looking for more money to come in, rather than a well based (more mature) community. Do you agree? I really don't think this is making a more mature community. I know a few younger kids, around age 10, who play the game, and the day of the update, a few of them constantly messaged me, using their new found swear words, and I feel that many younger kids seem to find it fun to swear excessively. I am hoping that some parents of younger kids will see this and not allow their children to play any more. That could deal with some of the annoying little kids.
January 14, 200917 yr Agree. If they lie about there age, its nots jagex'es responsibility if they hear "swear" words. Now if they don't lie about there age, they CANT hear swear words. O.O

Being able to use adult language doesn't convey maturity. Knowing what those words are, and knowing where and when they're appropriate (less than 1% of all conversation), now that's mature. I don't think that parents will talk to kids though. More or less, they'll be trusting either the child or some silly software program to do the role of Internet etiquette instead. What I'm trying to imply though is that the parents will decide to remove their kids from the game, resulting in less underage players. January 14, 200917 yr Jagex dosen't really care all that much about under age players. All they see is $5 a month. And the RS community is no more mature than it was a few months ago. 99 Pics - Range, Defence, HP, Attack, Magic, Strength, Cooking

January 15, 200917 yr It's very possible, and not such a bad idea really, on Jagexs' part. Did you know half the worlds population is below average intelligence?
January 15, 200917 yr I thought they were doing it for MechScape (which is targeted at people in their 20s) but maybe that's because I'm MechScape-obsessed. Mechscape World (the original MechScape fansite)

January 15, 200917 yr make this game more mature so it gets more mature players in the next few months. that way when they release their new "mature" mmo, people can switch more comfortably. or they are just uncensoring words that will be uncensored in their next mmo so the two of them can communicate between each other. i dunno im just glad that their uncensoring dumb words like suck and crap, and giving us more freedom.

I think this guy has the right idea. It's most likely because in order to make Mechscape more mature, they have to lighten the censor for both games.
January 15, 200917 yr I, personally, think it does have something to do with MechScape. I think they modified the censor so that they can just copy/paste the current coding for it into their MechScape database, instead of having to write code for a whole new censor. Jagex is known to have cut corners many times in the past, so it's not terribly far-fetched to think they'd copy segments of RS code to use for MS. As Ren said, Jagex claimed that MS is supposed to be geared towards a young adult audience, so having a censor that blocks relatively innocuous words like "damn" and "crap" would be counterproductive.
January 15, 200917 yr I still don't understand how certain words determine maturity. I can see it in game with certain players reactions to the update and with players actions... I don't know, I got back into RS a month or two ago and everyone I have met so far has been under the age of 14 and have no clue what RSC was and how we played... ehh.. I'm just really disappointed about the in game rs community nowadays. It's rare to find a decent person to talk.. I really hope this update does something good for the game. January 15, 200917 yr I agree with you nate. Hopefully it's true [hide][/hide][hide][/hide][hide][/hide]
January 15, 200917 yr I actually noticed a lack of maturity the first day of the new wordlist. Quite a few people were muted for using the new words offensively against others, and then complained to Jagex about it. Although, if all the immature players are constantly muted due to this, than I suppose yes.. we will be left with a mature community. At least, only the mature ones won't have little speech bubbles by their sentences. : A lot of the new available words are welcomed, though. It was annoying not to be able to say "That sucks" when your friend had recently lost a nice chunk of money or time. There are still a few words that I could like to see open for use, but more-so combinations with commas. If the kids can handle the new vocabulary, then great. If they can't, it will be their own undoing. PoetryIndexed Picture 1Indexed Picture 2 Killed my maxed Zerker pure April 2010 Rebooting Runescape
January 15, 200917 yr i really dont agree with what they did. i see more problems than problems solved with the changes they made. i dont want to believe it but i think it has to do with image and making runescape more "edgy". not quite "acceptable". like how cds are labelled with "may contain graphic words etc." and they actually sell more cds with that label. so by word of mouth, runescape's image changes from disney like to a more "popular with teenagers" kind of thing. because it's "edgy" and not something parents like. so, seems like jagex is working on their game's image. also, many of jagex's employees are fairly young and may have convinced others to free up the censor, but i think it's the wrong decision. i dont care for reading that kind of language, it isnt necessary and there are other less offensive words that can be used for the same purpose, so i dont see it as an improvement. and i dont see using swear words as an issue of being more mature; that wouldnt be the right term imo. they may have done some market research before they did this, idk. as for parents pulling the plug on paying for membership maybe fewer actually will then what we think. or not enough to consider the boost that would join or play an "edgier" game. but i think the main point is they didnt do this blindly and without considering a measured fallout and measured gains. this is the beginning of something big. expect to see more of this "mature" content in the future. such as severe violence and graphic imagery. at least that's what i think is the direction they are going. January 15, 200917 yr I think Jagex wants to get rid of the image that Runescape is a kids game. I visit forums where the average age is between 20 and 30, and Runescape is not popular at all there. While the WoW topics are booming. I think Jagex sees a lot of potential there. And I get the feeling that's true.
