GameSock
Recently on the wonderfull internet I came across quite the find. Heres a hint: What is black and green at the same time, and is a custom search by Google. Do you know? Well, its http://www.blackle.com/. This is a search engine, much like our good friend google, but with a few differences. -Blackle saves watt time because it uses mainly black pixels, black by definition means no light, and hence uses less energy. -Blackle's search quality can be considered slightly lower then Google, but if you are doing a specific search, it works perfectly. Here is an example. Google Search: [hide=] [/hide] Blackle Search [hide=] [/hide] -Blackle does not show links to "Google images/gmail/video/ect.) -Blackle does not have the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button -Blackle does not offer in other languages (to my knowledge) When I first saw Blackle I thought, "well im normally only at google for a few seconds before I reach my website", but then I did some simple calculations. I probably do about 15+ google searches per day, each of which takes around half a minute. So this means I alone save around 7.5 minutes of energy a day(assuming 1 minute on Blackle=1 watt minute saved). Now, if a million people use Blackle each day also for around 15 searches, and we could save approximently 125000 watt hours a day:o. If you want do something green today, and if you can get over the slight down sides, I encourage you to set Blackle as your homepage, and help save some energy. mmmcannibalism
How'd you find it? They should advertise it on the Google page if it were made by them.. there are a lot of google parody pages, and I believe google maintains them. They probably dont advertise because that would require advertising on those search engines to prevent losing business Orthodoxy is unconciousnessthe only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed. GameSock
Not quite sure, if you got to the website it says Google custom search. It's safe if thats what your wondering.
Lenin64
I don't even go to the google page. I have a google searchbar in my browser, as, I'm guessing, to many others. So the lack of I'm Feeling Lucky doesn't mean much. If I'm doing an image search, I use the searchbar first, then click the "images" button, it's just more convenient. And why set as homepage? Do people usually just google the sites they want when they first log on instead of typing the address? Command the Murderous Chalices! indy500fan
This is rather old, and is not relevant nowadays. Black only saves power on CRT monitors, on LCD monitors it uses slightly more.

i_love_burritos
I've known about Blackle for a long time. I use it when I search, but since it doesn't have a IGoogle feature, its not my homepage. Useless Statistics Made by me. Apparantly 1,072,496.190 Watt hours have been saved Thats 3,860,986,284 Joules by my calculations. Nearly four billion joules Which according to me, is a human moving about 350,000 Kilometers. On foot. About 9 times around the Earth.

BlueLancer
It's not a hoax really, it does save power especially when using larger monitors [1], so it's definitely useful. Google probably wont use it due to it not appearing to be user friendly (the white background also adds clarity at the cost of heavier power consumption) If you have a 15-18 inch monitor or smaller (a laptop or smaller desktop display), it doesn't do anything. In the worst case using the full black interface of Blackle can increase your power consumption even according to Google's official blog [2] One idea, suggested by the site called "Blackle" (which is not related to Google, by the way, though the site does use our custom search engine), is to reduce energy used by monitors by providing search with a black background. We applaud the spirit of the idea, but our own analysis as well as that of others shows that making the Google homepage black will not reduce energy consumption. To the contrary, on flat-panel monitors (already estimated to be 75% of the market), displaying black may actually increase energy usage. Statistically, there is a high chance that if you use Blackle you're just increasing your power consumption. The situation is different with larger monitors
Will H
Uh, I think I'll just keep with my Chrome Omnibar, thanks. Compared to most things we do daily, the power saved using a black background on Google seems negligible. ~ W ~
Joes_So_Cool
Yahoo ftw. Just kidding haha, but I've got a google bar in my browser next to the address bar. Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.
Flamewhisker
Blackle has been around for a while, there was a time that it was a phase at my school where people only used that (its amazing how they couldn't find enough info for their research project) the side google search pages are just jokes because they don't search as many pages. i belive more pages searched are better Please click and warm up my egg. Ouchy
I've known about this for a few years. Never used it, as it seems like Google for Al Gore fans. The fact that image search didn't work turned me off too. If Google really wanted this to take off, they would advertise it. My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

BlueLancer
Meh no image search This, plus is hurts my eyes. I don't know about you, but going from an almost fully black site like Maddox or Blackle after 10 minutes to nearly white pages like Digg or subSilver tip.it, makes reading very painful on the eyes. I don't even have glasses or contacts currently. Must be something about the retina cells in your eyes all activating at once upon sudden bright light, like when you wake up because somebody turned the lights on & you can't see a damn thing for maybe 20 seconds. Laura
LCDs don't turn off individual pixels, so it doesn't use any less energy for the majority of the people using LCD or LED.

Barihawk
Like Laura said, this is kind of useless in modern technology. For CRTs it might save a minimal amount of power, but LCD displays still are backlit at black, which saves nothing. It's an artifact from an earlier age. Like Altavista :P. We used Blackie way back when the internet was "new" on the market at school. Back then it might have done something besides hurt our eyes, I don't know. Erk02
I expected this to be the Blackbird equivalent of Google. I'm disappointed. But this is still kinda cool. I do English to Japanese and Japanese to English translation for free! Just keep it under 5 sentences, and PM me to use my fluency in Japanese to your advantage!
