I've heard of people being able to run Runescape on their XBox 360's, but I don't think there will actually be a console version.

they canceled the whole project. it was planned though.

Why do I not believe that? Probably because Java hasn't been ported to consoles yet? ;)

Anyway, I haven't heard any rumblings about it.

Jagex had spoken of rewriting the game engine to be compatible with modern consoles (which they said was not very hard). Although yes, I haven't heard of any updated to this project for a long time so I'm guessing they have either hidden it or more likely stopped.

i woulnt mind it but it would be really annoying to type.

:ohnoes: It would.

Sounds like a royal bother.

1) Port the game to whichever other language can run on whichever other consoles - probably C or C++, or some derivative thereof - depending on the number of consoles that they want to support

- Yeah, the game is at least 1 million lines of code, a huge chunk of it being Java. That would take some work.

2) Support simultaneous updates of the game on all platforms

- That means separate teams to maintain the code, so that it's at least released in a timely fashion

3) Offer bugfixes and support for all of the consoles that they'd want to support

- Requires more staff, and generates less profit - no way to guarantee that console users would buy members, and if that were the case, then the console users would opt for a PC anyway

4) Requires that the game be connected to the Internet at all times

- Defeats the purpose of putting it on a console; the idea behind that is that online gameplay is an option, not a requirement

It'd have been interesting, I just don't see it being feasible. Of course it's possible, but practical? I don't think so.

Or they could just make internet browsers capable of java on the PS3 lol. Although I still don't know how that would run.

I do have to admit though, playing Runescape on my 46 inch 1080p HDTV would look pretty sweet. 8-)

Wouldn't a television like that have a VGA input anyway? So you could play Full Screen.

Not true the game is almost entirely written in runescript only the external boot facilities and instructions of how to read runescript are coded directly into java. To port it to any console all that needs rewritten is those few external codes to make it into C or C++ applet that can then read and work with runescript

We get a topic like this every month or two.

Andrew said making it work on the PS3 wouldn't take "hardly any work at all" but this was last year, and we've not heard anything since then officially so it seems like they've cancelled their plans to do it.

As far as consoles, it wouldn't be a matter of having updates for multiple consoles. Just make it for only one console. The best console suited to doing this. And that would be a PS3. This is unbiased since I don't own any console games. It is just the truth. The PS3 is best suited for doing something like that.

So it could be done just for one console only. And it would make sense to do it for the one most capable of handling it.

I love the idea though. It would be the final push needed for me to go ahead an go buy one of those overpriced gadgets. Maybe Jagex and Sony could get together. Could be a beneficial deal for both sides. Then I think of the potential it would possibly have to brining in a ton more players. Then I think, forget that nonsense. We whine about players and their attitudes and the things they say now. Just imagine the potential for this problem exponentially getting worse!

Edit: I do love the idea! I also think it is a strong possibility that it would do more harm to the game more than be good for it too.

Is it possible that Jagex thinks the same thing and is putting current customer enjoyability over money?

If a Runescape came to consoles, I could be 100% sure it would just be a client. Also, it would most likely come to PS3 and Xbox360 only. The Wii has a maximum resolution of 640x480 or 854x480 (16:9 widescreen), or even 704/720x576 (which is only 4:3) which qualifies it for only an Enchanced Definition. Therefore, Runescape would be very ugly. LEaving you with the Xbox360 and PS3. I believe that both have keyboard support (correct me if I'm wrong), but neither has support for a USB mouse (which is easily done with a driver). Therefore, it is possible with minimal adjustments.

See http://www.computerandvideogames.com/ar ... ?id=167285 for that old interview. There has been nothing else about it since (although for the Head of RuneScape vacancy they did say that "Knowledge or experience of developing products for multiple platforms, including mobile" was a plus).

With a PS3 I suppose you could always just put Linux on it and play on your tv? Of course you can use a tv as your monitor with any computer. But you can put Linux on your PS3 and have mouse and keyboard. Maybe not exactly what you would call a console version, but a way to play on the tv if you already have the PS3 and don't want to have to bother setting your PC/laptop up with the tv.

Who told you that you can't use a USB mouse with a PS3?

Seriously though, 90% of usb gadgets work on PS3.

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

While I am aware you can use mice and keyboards with the PS3, shoot you can run Linux on it. I am trying to figure out if you could even get away from the mouse at least. Using an actual game controller. I guess you probably could, but still seems like the mouse for this game is still a better option for manuevering in the game. And I don't thing Jagex would by any means be trying to "take over" the market. I think there are probably just a whole lot of other issues involved that they would probably rather not deal with, and I am not talking about the issues I hypothesized about earlier.

Edit: Things like having to deal with the other companies. As where now, it is Jagex and they deliver through the Internet. No having to deal with Sony or other types of issues such as licensing or whatever. I am sure there are tons of issues that would arise from taking it to this type of platform. I am not up on what those issues would be, but it is easy to see that it would be a whole new ball game where you would have more things and people/companies to deal with in the business world.

I think the reason why they went away from the idea is, that many real console games company would wipe the floor with Jagex, if they attempted any sort of takeover in the field of console gaming.

Completely wrong. Firstly Jagex has never expressed a public opinion of 'taking over' the console games market. Secondly they would not 'wipe the floor with Jagex' as if a console version of RuneScape were to be released for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox360, it would sell in the millions.
