champion
Some of the schools you guys go to actually take security seriously. Anybody can just walk around my school. Our doors aren't even locked. When I was in first grade some guy was walking around outside with a gun or something and we're all like "awwwwesommmme."
Faux
Here's the problem though: £20 school jumper or £2 cheap t-shirt... that's the only issue I have with school uniforms is the cost which schools do tend to drive up a lot. My secondary was horrible for making sure you had the right pants and jumper and they took your shoes if they weren't all black... What problem? That jumper will last you a couple of years. You'll have to buy more t-shirts (I don't know what that "cheap" shirt would look like) over the course of that two years. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
Riku3220
@riku3220: When you can reply to a post with more than one-liner's as to why you disagree with points brough forth I might actually take the time to expand on what I initially said. But to kick things off, HOW do uniforms benifit the school ONLY. Oh, and unless your school is more secure than most restricted government buildings, I think you're exagurating a lot on requiring an ID to even get into your school. Let's see here... The uniforms cost money, which adds up over the years. Bad for the parents, good for the school. The uniforms make the students look 'distinguished'. Good for the school's reputation, but where's the benefit for the students? And trust me I don't exaggerate when I say we only need an I.D. to get into our school. Our entrances are barred, we have a fully armed police squad, and we have fire drills, bus evacuation drills, earthquake drills and lock-down drills every week. In fact the Friday before Easter weekend an armed robbery happened about 10 miles away from the school and we went into lock-down with 2 police at every entrance. It all justs comes down the the fact that uniforms are useless.
dusqi
I agree with people saying that it would probably be cheaper in the long run, wearing the same uniform every day rather than having to buy a couple of week's clothing to rotate around. I also think that it would reduce teasing because of clothes, even if kids do always find something to tease about (hair styles, jewelery, etc.) I think that children of poor parents would also benefit because they couldn't afford branded clothing. Something that no one has mentioned is that clothing is just another distraction in the classroom. "What is so-and-so wearing today?", "check out my new shirt", blah blah. I wore a uniform, as nearly all school students in the UK do, and it simplified my life greatly. For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns. The time when the living and the dead exist as one. Said person would have to be wearing something extremly dirty, tacky, or the person seems to be colorblind. The "Check out my new clothes" phase only happens the week after Summer and Christmas break.
Zierro
If you feel that the clothes you wear is the only outlet you have to express yourself effectively then you aren't trying hard enough, if at all. Clothing is the best way of passively catching someone's attention. I can't begin to imagine all the friendships/relationships that were formed just because someone was wearing a particular thing that caught someone else's eye that day. And to the people saying school is for education and not socializing, then when is the time for socializing?

Da_Latios
I don't believe we have any schools in Australia with a security force, and if there are, I'd assume it'd have the minimal protection. We have uniforms, and nobody complains. There are no distinct social classes; nobody is seen to be rich or poor. People are content with looking the same as the attitude toward each other is usually similar to everyone else. Talset65
Yeah, there should be uniforms in school. I love girls in uniform (I have just left school, so not a pedo lol). Tough times don't last. Tough people do.

unkn0wnwarrior
I don't think uniforms should be worn in public schools. They don't stop teasing, as people will always find another thing to tease you for. An example could be weight. And some families can't afford them and since the chances of them being free are slim to none, their kids wouldn't be able to get any. Dress codes are needed, but uniforms should be restricted to private schools. Nothing will stop teasing, but when kids wear their normal clothes to school there's extra things for them to be teased about, their fashion sense and style or if they wore that particular piece of clothing a few days ago or not, kids will be constantly judging eachother and paying way to much attention on their clothes... That is exactly my point. Uniforms will not stop teasing. Public or Private makes no difference, people will get "teased", if you let it get to you you're just as pathetic as the "teasers". If anything uniforms will be more beneficial to poor families than standard clothing will be considering it's the social normality to wear different clothes everyday in non-uniform schools while in uniform schools to get through the week, you need your jumper, slacks and a 2-3 shirts, which can be relatively cheap. My entire wardrobe cost me no more than $80 (Canadian, about 50 euro) and I have had most of it for 3-4 years. That's 7 complete outfits.
Madmanpur3
No, Uniforms are useless because it benefits nobody but the school.Uh, I attended a school that had a uniform policy from grades 1-12 (here in the US) and the school never made anything off of the uniforms because...they didn't sell them. They did profit off the "spirit wear" but that wasn't part of the uniform, was moreso for parents/students to wear to extracurricular activities to show support. Also the uniforms we had were really cheap too, black pants + white polo or button up from grades 1-8, then 9-12 we had the option of wearing khakis instead of black pants. People are content with looking the same as the attitude toward each other is usually similar to everyone else. Yeah, I always wore a uniform in school. Even in primary school. I don't see what the main difference is between uniform and non-uniformed schools. As Latios mentioned all schools have uniforms indiscriminatly. Maybe something to do with our unseverd umbilical cord with the British. Schools here that do not have uniform, at least in the main cities are usually lowest of the low schools. Burrows for underaged drug dealers and [developmentally delayed]s. Apparently some people advocate the use of uniforms in schools because it "increases discipline" which I think is bull. To the people that say uniforms benefit the school - it may be different in the state, you know, the [cabbage]house (generally speaking) school system and all. But here most of the money from uniforms goes back into the school. Yeah, there should be uniforms in school. I love girls in uniform (I have just left school, so not a pedo lol). I lol'd HARD at that. Clothing is the best way of passively catching someone's attention. I can't begin to imagine all the friendships/relationships that were formed just because someone was wearing a particular thing that caught someone else's eye that day. That seems a TAD bit shallow doesn't it ? For better or for worse, however meaningfull those relationships, they were founded on chance, and a fruit of the loom disparity. 3hitm4g3u
I had to wear a uniform. Made our non-uniform days more fun. It was a pretty accepting school; nobody really took any notice of what kind of style you wore, although you had to be prepared to get constantly barraged by insults all day long if you dared show up in your uniform on non-uniform day. His point is that focusing on academics and improving classes, the school is instead directing its attention to useless school uniforms.
