Manufactured pop stars

Featured Replies

EDIT: Several people took offense to my original post, which was written in a satirical way. To avoid getting the wrong message across I heavily cropped the post and removed statements that I wrote in sarcasm that some took seriously. I don't like censoring what I wrote but I recieved a dozen angry PM's and I really don't want to give the wrong impression to anyone else.

Auto-Tune. A powerful program used by studios and singers to make anyone a popstar. For centuries the entertainers of the world had to rely on their honed voices and perfect pitch to be successful, but it seems that many of today's popstars are just people with connections to record labels. While there are still real bands that make traditional songs, an increasing amount of today's popstars are heavily reliant on programs like Auto-Tune.

For those of you that dont know what Auto-Tune is, you sing into a microphone and it quickly and effectively modifies your tune and pitch so it sounds cool. Lady Gaga, T-Pain, Kanye West, and tons of others all use this program. Its laughable how easy it is to make a 50 million dollar song now, you dont even have to sing. Im not kidding, you can just talk in a normal voice into a microphone and a song pops out the other end. To prove this point a group on YouTube bought the high end version of the software to show how easy it is to make a song. To really prove how easy it is they make a song, they wanted to use it on people just talking casually. What is a public recorded source of people just talking? Cable News. They used AutoTune on news broadcasts and added a basic beat, the results are hilariously awesome.

Kind of depressing how the guys that made those video got no profit what-so-ever for their work, and its better quality than half the stuff on the radio :D

If you ignore them they cease to exist. poppy people that is, didn't read the whole thing, cause I was lazy, but now I did. It's really just best to ignore all the stupid [cabbage]ty popstars and whatnot.

Singing skill is no issue, anyone can make a good rap song with 3 things.

-A lot of drug/violence/sex references

-A thesaurus to make some rhymes

-A good beat

It really is a mystery why people seem to think you're a good poster.

Cool.

If only it were that easy. But let's be frank: People lack any sort of intelligence outside of the mainstream and have no taste, and that's referring to A LOT of people.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

Yes, this.

'Manufactured pop' is fun. That's all I care about. Music doesn't have to require skill to be enjoyable - personally, I find playing triange or banging a tambourine quite relaxing and amazingly entertaining.

It's because he is, and he's also right. Many artists these days can't sing for their lives. One example of this is the infamous Miley Cyrus. May I go on?

But I also agree that I can find some music like that enjoyable.

That reminds me of a time in music class.

We were doing a drum circle and it was my turn to do a solo. I did the opening drum beat to Down with the Sickness.

On topic: I don't really give a crap if it's "manufactured" or not. If it's good, I'll listen to it. I hate rap, but I find Emeniem (sp?) a good rapper. Some of his songs like "Mockingbird", "Stan", and "When I'm Gone" are amazing and show that rap is more than just pimps and drug money.

I don't think he's arguing that no one should enjoy it. Just that it's ridiculous how they get other people and resources to do the work for them but yet they still make millions of dollars.

Something I never understood about rap was when someone makes a song about how rich they are and how great their life is, but then they turn around and make another song about how poor they are and how hard their life is. It is either complaining to the extreme or bragging to the extreme. Kinda points to the fact that they're full of [cabbage].

This is why i hate rap/ r&b its not music, its freaking talentless asshats with some machine making a beat, ill stick to hard rock/heavy metal.

Edit: eminem is fun to listen to, he actually is pretty funny, like We Made You? that song makes me giggle everytime.

Lol, I remember one time in class, we got to listen to the radio during finals. That song came on and our teacher immediately turned off the radio. The whole class was like: :|

People like you fail to understand that different genres of music have different strengths and weaknesses, and if you are to analyse whether or not an artist is good or bad, you have to do it in relation to their genre. If you were to analyse a Pop artist's skill based on musicianship/guitarwork they would obviously come off as terrible, as that's not what Pop is about. Pop is about the catchiness and how likeable the music is.

While I agree that certain artists--namely those who don't write their own music--perhaps do not deserve the fame they receive, to criticize the entire genre because of that is foolish. There are many Pop artists out there who are talented (even if not at singing, then at composing/producing), and deserve the fame they receive.

Cool.

No, you can make money with those three things. That doesn't make it a good rap song. Some rappers you still have to respect, because their stuff is dozens of times more poetic than other, actually good non-rap songs. I'm not a fan of rap either, so I'll just link to this video that was posted sometime.

I think it passes on more of a message than any Metallica or Iron Maiden song out there. And I'm a metalhead.

Just goes to show you've never tried it. Honestly, I'd like to see you on a TR-909, it's probably harder than actually playing those songs on a drumset.

I never said the genre of pop was terrible now, did I? You need to think these things through.

Because he often puts in a lot of effort, and it shows. Though this is one of his worst, still pretty interesting though.

I find it pretty insulting that people who actually do this can make so much money, yet aren't actually doing anything.

Deathdrow, it isn't as easy as ignoring them, there will always be people who enjoy this stuff. Now it seems that the illusion of talent in musical ability is becoming more of an illusion. People can fake talent easier, while those who put in hard work are ignored, because they are not as perfect as this manufactured music, and let's face it. They never will be.

SilverSword, I agree with you that music doesn't require skill to be enjoyable, yet people believe you now need a good level of skill to really enjoy it. This illusion of talent is what often stops someone just picking up a guitar and playing whatever the hell they feel like.

Oh, and I'll agree with Spacheco that Eminem is good to listen to, however, I disagree with his choice there, personally I enjoy Mosh, 3am, Beautiful and some others that escape my mind more. We Made You was just annoying at times.

Lol holy crap people, its a satire post based around the music videos I posted. Heck I pretty much made the entire thread just as an excuse to post those video's, and the humor of my post revolved around the comedic use and oversimplification of rap shown in the vids.

Wow, I mean wow, was the humor really that subtle? Yes I think a lot of today's stars are superficial but I mean come'on. "If your black use more sex references and swear a lot", lol how can anyone take that seriously.

Sorry I rubbed so many of you the wrong way I guess, but watch the music videos and lighten up :)

Thanks, man, I watched the smoking lettuce about 5 times in a row and am now even thinking in auto-tunes, with random injections of "it's the smooo-oo-oo-o-oke". But really, it is true, todays' pop stars don't need to make much effort. We all heard the Ashlee Simpson story where she was found to lip-sync and not even sing in the recording.

Rock is not necessarily safe, either, there's at least one video of a band that falls of the stage and it keeps playing. And the whole Dragonforce-speed up thing, or whatever it is they do.

Since the early 2000s this trend has spread to non-rap music. Hannah Montana, Brittney Spears, etc arent good singers. The studio makes a catchy beat, and then the popstar sings some random lyrics to go with it (for best results sing about love or relationships, if your black use more sex references and swear a lot). Then the studio digitally edits the singers voices and releases it for millions of dollars. Its especially annoying that the singer gets all the credit and tens of millions of dollars. They get huge egos and spend millions of dollars on worthless stuff meanwhile the studio techies that made the beat to the song (which, these days, is what makes a song good) get paid a low salary and get zero prestige or fame from what they do. Its such a stupid system.

You've just captured and articulated everything I hate about pop. Thank you. I feel like i just recieved a scroll from the heavens. When will the world wake up and recognize the falseness of their devilish idols?
