Dizzle229
I made an account on PETA forums awhile back to troll them, and just got this email. Dear Friend, I wanted to be the first to let you, as a registered user on PETA's online forums, know about a change in our online community strategy. Because of the overwhelming success of PETA's communities on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, we have decided to close up shop on our forums on PETA.org. We have found in recent months that the vast majority of people are connecting with PETA through our social network profiles or by commenting on articles on The PETA Files, PETA Prime, the VegCooking blog, and PETA Living rather than on our message boards. Given this, and feedback from our supporters, we have decided to focus our efforts on these and new initiatives. We will redirect the PETA forums this Friday, July 24, at 4 p.m. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the closing of the forums. We hope that people who have connected through PETA's forums will stay connected, and we encourage those looking for more information on animal rights and cruelty-free living to further explore our Web sites. I hope to see you connecting with PETA through one of our many other avenues. And stay tuned for the new online community and social networking initiatives that will be unrolled in coming months. Best regards, Joel Bartlett Assistant Director of Marketing PETA Overwhelming success on Facebook/Twitter/etc...? I don't think so. They're shutting down the forums because they can no longer afford to keep it up, whether it's paying for servers/hosting/bandwidth, or if it's too high maintenance because of raids and trolls (common on PETA forums). So what do you think? What they want has never really made a difference, but I hate them so much that I'd love to see them go. Do you think that this is the first step to PETA's disappearance? Get back here so I can rub your butt.
Danqazmlp
First thing, do you have any proof of your claims apart from blatant opinion on the subject? How do you know that what they said in the email isn't the full truth? But apart from that, i have no opinion on PETA as i've never had any contact with them. Want to be my friend? Of course theres nothing other than opinion, they aren't coming out and saying "we suck so we're shutting everything down lolz". I'm just asking OT what everyone thinks of this. This doesn't mean they're going to come down all at once, I just think it's the first step. Get back here so I can rub your butt.

Giordano
God damn, why does OT have a strange obsession over PETA? I haven't seen PETA change anything around enough to cause chaos. michel555555
They're like mosquittos, no matter how many times you swat them they just keep coming back. But if we finally do kill the blood suckers i'll be the first to break out the champainge [spoiler=click you know you wanna]Me behave? Seriously? As a child I saw Tarzan almost naked, Cinderella arrived home from a party after midnight, Pinocchio told lies, Aladin was a thief, Batman drove over 200 miles an hour, Snow White lived in a house with seven men, Popeye smoked a pipe and had tattoos, Pac man ran around to digital music while eating pills that enhanced his performance, and Shaggy and Scooby were mystery solving hippies who always had the munchies. The fault is not mine! if you had this childhood and loved it put this in your signature!

sandycat0
I honestly dont see whats wrong with PETA. I believe strongly in animal rights, and PETA helps that cause. If they didnt interfere with how people do things, then they wouldnt really be changing anything, would they? I agree that they dont always use the best methods, however. About the forums going down, i do think that theyre mostly telling the truth, and its a good thing that theyre shutting down they're forums. If their forums are not needed and they stop spending money on them, then they will be using their money to help animals instead of paying for bandwidth. RIP Chuck Schuldiner
BlueLancer
The forums aren't shutting down because a lack of funds. Remember this is an organisation that easily spends $200,000 on a single TV-ad spot and gets millions of dollars in donations annually, hosting a low traffic forum doesn't cost much at all. Likely it's just the truth, most of their community is concentrated on other social interaction sites like Facebook. There's nothing to cover up; I'm not particularly fond of the organisation either but it would be ridiculous to think they're going bankrupt anytime soon, let alone shut down a web forum due to a shortage of money. Their Facebook community has about 250,000 members, their forum only has under 5000 users. So I can see the logic in just not hosting the forum when the majority of 'Peta fans' don't even use it, rather opting for Facebook etc.

I found it odd that PETA would be "out of money" seeing as they get A LOT of donations from, presumably, mentall unstable people.

Hawks
I used to be a fan of PETA on Facebook, then I took them off due to the inane amount of updates I got (and finding out about 'Sea Kittens')... I honestly don't think that Facebook stats have any correlation to the number of people who care about what PETA 'stands for'. You've got a bunch of uninformed people who go, "PETA? They want to save the animals! I'll be a fan!" and then they send requests to their friends and you get a huge mess. This 'additional social networking' stuff doesn't sound good though. sig by Soa.....tip.it times.....art & mediadeviantart/flickr/last.fm/steam/twitter/tumblr/youtube
obfuscator
I would be inclined to doubt they have money issues, out of all the ridiculous adds they've sponsored keeping a forum up isn't very expensive. As bluelancer said I think that they legitimately do get more of a following on Facebook etc. Regardless of my personal feelings for the group I feel as though you are really jumping to conclusions here. Will H
As much as I would love to see them go, I doubt they're getting rid of the forums because they're going down the drain. Something like animal rights activism goes better in a social networking site than a forum, because they supply features which encourage active and group events, as well as being downright popular*. It seems a logical step for me. *The people there would probably have less of an idea of what PETA is campaigning for anyway. ~ W ~
Chained_life
Good, they make people that really care about animals and other anti-animal abuse organizations (none that I'm aware of) look bad. I would gladly donate some of my time or money to a real anti-animal abuse organization... Edit: I'm not a fringe one either, I still love a nice steak whenever I can get \

Skeptical
You took a tiny amount of circumstantial evidence, and then applied it in a roundabout manner to support your own inane theories. Therefor, hold no grudge against me when I say  A matter that I don't understand however, is why TIF has such a negative opinion of PETA. Sure, I could never bend my moral spine in such a manner that I could call them perfect, or even near-perfect, but if there isn't anyone to get into the way of those who promote or participate in animal cruelty, why would anything ever change? Kiriyama
Oh sure, I'm against cruelty to animals. But PETA are bat[cabbage] insane. Have you seen half the stuff they have wanted done? Someone needs to shut them up, permanently. I'm against meaningless cruelty to animals, but I'm not against killing animals for food, well, unless it is done in an incredibly painful and cruel way. I think some other animal rights organisations have spoke against PETA too. Denizen of Darkness| PSN= sworddude198
