August 13, 200916 yr I call BS Agreed. I'll have to ask my dad when he gets home for confirmation, he works at Microsoft, if it's true he'll probably know. EDIT: Yup, its true, asked my dad a few minutes ago. Apparently its only the old version though, like 2000 or 2003, and it only one feature that they'll have to change before they can start re-selling it. August 13, 200916 yr I've seen the story on multiple sites. It's true. Nemo vir est qui mundum non reddat meliorem..
August 13, 200916 yr Author I'm pretty sure that they'll appeal it and do whatever they can to be able to sell it. But TBH, Microsoft has fined so many times, I'm surprised they've not gone bust. Sa121, it'd be great to see what your dad says. Agreed kenshinjapan. RIP TET "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." - Friedrich Nietzsche
August 13, 200916 yr This is interesting. We'll have to see what happens if they can't overturn the ruling. Forum Updates & Suggestions <------ Let your voice be heard!Forum Games <------- Coolest place on Tip.ItTip.It Forum Rules <------- Read them!
August 13, 200916 yr I would personally like to see cheaper, or even free alternatives being offered if Word can't be sold. It's kinda bizzare though, can't say I ever saw it coming  I edit for the [Tip.It Times]. I rarely write in [My Blog]. I am an [Ex-Moderator].
August 13, 200916 yr I would personally like to see cheaper, or even free alternatives being offered if Word can't be sold. It's kinda bizzare though, can't say I ever saw it coming  Google Docs is a nice alternative. It doesn't have some of the nicer features of Word, but it is pretty cool since it's free. August 13, 200916 yr I would personally like to see cheaper, or even free alternatives being offered if Word can't be sold. It's kinda bizzare though, can't say I ever saw it coming  Open office is a open-source Office clone. As good, if not better than Office itself. But for aesthetic purposes, I'll stick with my pirated Office 2003. [iNSERT "I R EATIN TEH SHIX ATM" BILL COSBY SIGNATURE GIF HERE, LOL]
August 13, 200916 yr All they have to do is change what file types Word can use. I don't know how hard that'll be but it doesn't seem like its going to end Word as we know it. Give it a month a and we'll have a court somewhere reverse the ruling or MS will just get rid of the file types.
August 13, 200916 yr What happens to the copyright status of Microsoft Word if this decision holds? There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. Thatregret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new, better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret. It's experience.

August 14, 200916 yr OpenOffice is free, Windows compatible and lighter/more efficient than Word. It also supports all formats Word does. There is no reason to pay for a commercial version.
August 14, 200916 yr It'll be reversed soon I bet. This. Microsoft will probably settle or get the ruling overturned.
August 14, 200916 yr Microsoft is rich as hell, they'll buy there way out if they have too :^o PSN: Skaterguy1224 Tactical Nukes - 22
August 14, 200916 yr If they can't get the ruling overturned MS will have to pull all XML-related things from their software... the only advantage of that being we would all have .doc again instead of that .docx stuff (which is like impossible to open at any school or public building in America, the computers aren't updated enough... -.- ).
August 14, 200916 yr i4i, based in Toronto, Canada, claimed that Microsoft "willingly violated" a patent granted in 1998 concerning methods for reading XML, a kind of programming language. Microsoft said it would appeal against the verdict. "We are disappointed by the court's ruling," said Kevin Kutz, a spokesman for the software giant. "We believe the evidence clearly demonstrated that we do not infringe and that the i4i patent is invalid. There's three sides to every story. your side, my side, and the truth. I wonder which is the truth in this one.. 8-)

August 14, 200916 yr The ban will almost certainly be overturned in a higher court. The circuit court of eastern Texas is famous for favoring the plaintiff in patent cases.
