Obama Plans 'Inspirational' Speech Sept 8 to Students

The speech was fantastic, well written, and well done. The day of school removed by doing the federal curriculum was a ginormous waste of time to the school districts idiotic enough to have done it. Teachers already have a tough time trying to crunch everything that they are expected to teach into a school year. Having an entire day wasted only makes that harder.

We didn't get too watch it. Turns out my school district was one of those protesting the speech. Then again, we're the 2nd most conservative county in the US (I think), so I guess it isn't that surprising. Pretty lame, I could have used that time out of chemistry.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I didn't get to watch it either. My AP European History teacher said that since it didn't pertain to European History he was wasn't going to interrupt his class for it. It made little difference since I had already read it though.

complete waste of my time. he said the exact same thing all adults tell you every stinking year, do good in school, make good choices...get good grades, you're the future so dont screw up...

i've heard it tons of times before, hearing it from the president changes absolutely nothing. can't believe we listened to that instead of actually learning something usefull in class.

Quit complaining. You heard the president give a nice, well-thought out speech to America's students for a little while. What a tragedy you make it out to be.

Besides the fact that this is illegal? Federal law expressly forbids the Secretary of Education or any officer from exercising "any direction, supervision, or control over the curriculum, program of instruction, administration, or personnel of any educational institution, school, or school system." 20 U.S.C. § 3403. I find the ease with which Obama throws aside Federal law and regulations highly disconcerting. Also, I don't really care if you think it is "harmless" or not. Still illegal.

Inspirational speech you [bleep] idiot. Christ, you conservative types really bring down your party.

Ahh, the old Saul Alinsky tactic I see. Isolate your target, freeze, then attack your individual target. Were you not aware, some of the controversy surrounding Obama's speech stems from a proposed lesson plan created by the Education Department to accompany the address. An initial version of the plan recommended that students draft letters to themselves discussing "what they can do to help the president." I do not wish students to help the president in any way. I want them to help America. Also, you Ad Hominum attack on me and my political believes honestly is a well known flaw in logic. Not only is this illegal, for the president or any other Federal official to interfere with the curriculum of a school. Have you not heard the statement "love your country, but distrust your government." I prefer to follow this statement. As the president is interfering logically it would be illegal per current federal law. Whilst you may claim it is harmless, the matter still stands that this act is illegal.

First off, im not complaining, im simply stating fact. that entire speech has been said before, time and time again. there is no denying that. It is the same stuff that parents and teachers say every year.

It was a waste of my time because it took up class periods where I could have actually been learning something.

oh, and i guarantee it was nice, and well thought out by one of his writers, not by him.

The speech was decent, but nothing will really come out of it. I give him props though for at least trying to reach out to the youth. I just got really pissed at the stupid kids that were making radical statements about the speech. For instance, one girl (who is a top 10 student out of 1000+) stated that the speech was brainwashing kids into communism  .

The Republicans shot themselves in the foot with this. They started complaining that it would be leftist stuff before he made the speech, and probably before it was even written. Much ado about nothing. They'd looked stupid.

He didn't need to make the speech, but I didn't really think it would ever be anything that bad.

What he said isn't as important as should he have been doing it and the fact that it is illegal. He changed what he had planned to say after there was so much uproar, but of course no liberal is going to give that a second thought.

exactly.

though i have to be fair, he's not the only person do do that. but it is relavant to the topic that he didn't write his own motivational speech.

you're really going to tell me that you have never, ever heard parents and teachers tell you that you need to succeed in school? i find that very hard to believe.

Why do you keep bringing up this stupid illegal crap? He didn't had control over schools since, 99% of my school didn't show it. Does that mean most of my teachers are gonna be arrested?

if you used some common sense you would realize.. of course you won't have heard that exact speech before. if you paid attention to my posts you'd see that i'm saying the contents of that speech has been said time and time again, which it has. if you can't admit that you must be some sort of [developmentally delayed].

and yes, his entire speech was about staying in school actually, he just used more than three words. did you even listen to it? if you did, you would know that it was about staying in school.

You say that anyone has heard that entire speech over and over again multiple times. Then you say that of course you wouldn't haven't heard that speech before.

I never once said his speech didn't say anything about staying in school. You just seem to be manipulating my sentences here.

It was required to watch it during 8th period today. Since 8th period is gym and it was raining and they are fixing the roof in the gym, we wouldn't have played anyways.

It doesn't matter anyways. The TV screens were so high up they looked like 1 inch screens. And you couldn't hear him anyways. I just played Pokemon.

still, you're not reading what im saying. ill make it bigger so you can read it: I said that the contents of his speech have been said over and over again, not his entire speech word for word. is that easier to understand?

your right, you never said the speech didnt say anything about staying in school. but what you did say was:

His entire speech didn't consist of the three words "stay in school."

those three words there sums up his whole speech pretty well, dontcha think?

What's the big [bleep]ing deal, that all of you are making it out to be ?

If you've heard it a million times before by parents, teachers, who cares ? If anything it should motivate you more, and is for your betterment. Gosh I hate kids who whine and [bleep], and yet complain when they don't get the marks they wanted.

Does the fact that he is repeating it reduce the validity of his speech ? People have to move past their petty conspiracy theories about how Obama is trying to brainwash the youth of America, etcetera. Isn't he making an attempt to elevate the students of America out of complacency and laziness ? So what difference does it make if Obama tells it, or some junkie from the street ? I'll let you figure this one out. ;)

It was a waste of my time because it took up class periods where I could have actually been learning something.

Keep telling yourself that. :-w

I think it's good to keep kids in school, but a major problem is how schools, especially where I live, are getting worse and worse. Even my teachers agreed. We don't have money for textbooks, substitutes, and extracurricular activities anymore. We need to change the educational system - no more freaking FCATs and "Learning Centers". They're so counterproductive it's not even funny. If you want kids to stay in school, at least make it worth their while. But right now, I don't blame anyone who wishes to dropout.

Stay in school, you of all people need it. Tell me, how is what he did illegal, and what evidence do you have that he changed it "after the uproar?"
