Obama Plans 'Inspirational' Speech Sept 8 to Students

Featured Replies

I've already got permission from my parents to just skip school that day. I've got my friends skipping with me. It's a waste of a school day. I can learn more with friends messing around on the computer then listening to him tell me what I am already doing in school. It's not right that he can dictate a lesson plan for it and almost require schools to play it. Instead of my class mates and I talking about how wonderful Obama is (It will come up because someone will start it, guaranteed,) I can be studying Alg. 2, or German. Talking about how great he is has 0 educational value, reading about Early African Life in history has at least some value.

I'm pretty sure it is required, if you attend school that day, to watch his address and do the lesson plan. We're protesting by not going. I know many other people who think the same at my school are following along. I wonder what the school will do when they realize 100+ students are absent that day.

That'll teach the President to never give an inspirational speech to students again! Fight the power!

Our school won't be doing the lesson plan thing anyway. I wouldn't care either way whether we did it or not.

I think politicians forget again and again that kids tune out whenever a dude in a suit addresses them. I don't blame them - people in suits are excruciatingly dull.

It always surprises me when I realise how many successful people went to top universities, not just "suits" but movie directors, film stars, musicians, comedians... people that kids look up to. I think it'd be inspiring to get a load of them to make a video praising their education. Even the most creative jobs that we don't associate with being intelligent often benefit from a good education - it's a case of being open minded, seeing opportunities that others miss, making connections that others don't make, being able to think critically and logically, knowing the world around you. They are skills that don't get taught, but they do come with a good education.

For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns.

Hehe, pretty much the only famous person I really look up to is Quentin Tarantino, and he dropped out of school as a freshman. Looks like I'm starting late.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Tennessee's schools test pathetic, it is sad how little people know. I can name every student with a 30+ on the ACT in that school. Why? There is one. Why is that a big deal? School of 1900.

And how many 30+ are in my neck of the woods in that state in my school of 1700? Two. Granted I got a 27 but still. Tennessee's education is miserable. Not to mention how many scholarships I didn't get as a result of living in this hellhole of a state. I applied for about... 30 scholarships in total, and only got two.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

Yeah bro, fight the power.

I find it pretty pathetic that you're going to purposely skip school, be proud of it, over a unimportant speech that won't affect anybody by Mr. Obama's speech writer's time. It's not like your current school has anything better to show you than Obama's speech. And since when did "inspire" turn into "a do-this plan"?

I don't quite see whats so special about this at all. No offence to Obama, but it's just an overhyped regular speech. Politicians give speeches aimed at childeren everyday.

In addition, I'm pretty sure he has a speech writer. So in essence he's there to deliver a message everyone already understands and agrees with, but I suppose a refresher can't hurt.

Good point, but I think they already know that. They're just "talking" to the kids so the parents will be like, "Aww, they care about my little Johnny. I like this guy."

We may or may not watch it. We watched his inauguration in class last year so it's a maybe. Is this speech aimed at high school, middle school, or elementary school kids?

Apparently everyone from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.

I will be going to school that day, I'm not sure if I have lunch at noon or not yet. If I do and the televisions are on, I'm going to request to eat my lunch elsewhere. If I'm in a class that's watching it I'm walking out. If I get in trouble I'm calling the local news stations. I have permission from my parents to do so. Gonna be a great day.

Sorry if this is OT but IMHO the thing that really needs to be done about education is the quality of teaching. A child's attitude to education is of utmost importance - and, in personal experience, it's the lessons for which we have the best teachers that we enjoy most and have the best attitude towards. I could cite numerous examples of lengthy homework assignments given by different teachers, some lengthily, eagerly and - would you believe it! - voluntarily, discussed by us, the pupils, outside lessons, others dismissed with disdain because we've been led to believe the subject is a waste of time by a teacher who doesn't seem to care for it. By no means am I saying the teachers are the only driving force behind any successes or failures the pupils have, but that the better the teacher, and the more enthusiasm he or she can inject into their students, the better for everyone.

-.- Sorry. I still don't know how to do that link thingy, help anyone?

I totally agree. I've hated subjects just because I hated the teacher and the teacher hated the subject. I've also loved subjects because they teacher is funny and enjoys teaching what they teach.

I just think the questions are bizarre. I don't care for Obama, and speeches are fine. But to hang motivational posters quoting speeches and some of the questions are too weird. Its almost like "Support Obama" rather than "think for yourself".

If it's just to teenaged kids I wouldn't mind. I think they're old enough to start making their decisions.

But as far as elementary and middle schoolers, well, I guess it's never to early for big government indoctrination. ;)

Well, as far as my school district goes, it won't have much effect.

The young children won't understand a word.

The Middle Schoolers will look for "thats what she said" opportunities and not pay any attention to the actual speech.

The kids who should listen (the druggies, etc) will ignore it.

The goody goodies will hang onto every word, but don't really need to.

I am debating with myself whether to sleep through it or listen, then pick it apart (I'm not an Obama fan).

Then of course theres the handful of kids who will take an active interest and pay attention.

The only difference between Hitler and the man next door who comes home and beats his kids every day is circumstance. The intent is the same-- to harm others.

Oh, and I'm the 30+ -.-' We've had a few, but at the moment I'm the only one. It will change by the end of the year.

Do you mean greek?

I don't see why so many people are unsupportive and unwilling to give Obama's speech a chance. It's only going to take about an hour out of your day to watch and listen. Lets all face the facts, our schooling system in the US sucks and it needs to be improved for future generations so why not start now?

tFtfA.jpg

This is pointless. Future- oriented people, already get good grades. Present-oriented people who need this more will not be affected because they are present oriented. So its a good time waster.

If you need a speech from the US President to motivate you to stay in school I think it's best if you just curled into a ball and died.

If kids aren't motivated now, then why would a boring, 1-hour speech from a president change anything..

Forgive my ignorance but why all the negativity? Obama is a politician who, for the most part, is admired and respected by the young. That's certainly the case amongst my friends, and I live in the UK. You're all very quick to decry any action he's taking to motivate teenagers, but what's he doing that's so pointless? That Obama is reaching out to a generation alienated by many adults by their unjust reputation for being inhumane, knife-wielding, drug-dealing thugs is surely to be admired and congratulated.

I just can't understand your certainty that this is all a waste of time. Even if this means only a handful more people make up their mind to do something worthwhile with their lives, it'll be worth it. And that's a worst-case scenario. Let's get this straight - as far as I see it, Obama is more than a boring old man in a suit, especially to our generation. He represents... well, hope, I guess, a new era. Maybe he hasn't lived up to that, I don't know a thing about US politics, but I'm telling you, there are going to be people listening to him, and hanging on to his every word.

Guys, all I'm saying is, please don't talk about someone who's provided us with so much hope and inspiration like this.

For starters, it is my amendment right to be able to talk about him critically. Now, I will talk less critically of him when he fulfills all he has promised. Right now everything is just one big promise and we are hoping he actually fixes this. Right now, providing us with hope wont go very far, because people will be pissed when he doesn't deliver.

Sicus Locum Para Bellum!

This outrage is [bleep]ing ridiculous. Parents are pulling kids from school for the day and all other kind of irrational things.

Pulling a child out of school for a day because you want to shield them from a speech that you don't agree with politically, and one that will probably have little to no impact on things, seems pretty damn irrational to me.

It's fine if you don't agree with a certain political party, but you're essentially making decisions for your child. I mean if they're young then they probably wouldn't even catch any political ideologies about it, and would only get the basic message (work hard, ect. ect.). If they're old enough to understand the politics about it then perhaps they are old enough to make a decision for themselves and not have their parent shield them.

And for the record, I don't affiliate myself with any political party, nor am I "For" Obama or "against" Obama. I still find it ridiculous that people would pull a child out of a full day of school for an hour long speech though...

That was a reply I posted to some guy who said he would pull his children out of school for the day on digg. In the end if you don't agree with his politics than just don't pay attention when they play the speech, or just pay attention enough to answer any questions.

I'm honestly intrigued by what he has to say. I can't understand why people don't want to just listen to him. If he feels that he needs to say something, then we should all listen. It doesn't mean we have to do what he says, it means we should try and understand why he is saying what he is.

I'll probably read over the speech Monday when it is released (that's what I've heard atleast).

Oh yeah and I will be watching this during school. I have history that hour, so it's almost 100% garunteed that we will be watching it (it's not required).
