How has this game not been made?

So while searching the web, I decided to look for a zombie armageddon game, that would work like this.

At the start of the game, you're plopped in a random spot in the middle of a heavily populated city. There are about 2-5 zombies that start at random points in the city. This would mean that there would only be a few zeds at first, but then it would eventually go out of control. You would be able to talk to anyone in the city, and try and get them to join your group. Some would not want to join, some would. Different people would have random stats, except for police officers and thing like that, which would be better with more specific skills. You would need to gather resources from the city, food, ammunition and stuff, which would not respawn. You could find wood, hammers, nails and stuff to board up areas, which would need to be checked often of course. If bitten, different people would take different amounts of time to turn, and some would try and hide it if they were bitten.

I could spend hours going over all of this stuff, but I think you guys get the idea by this point. Basically, an almost perfectly realistic zombie armageddon simulator.

Apparently the master of the undead himself, George A. Romero, shared this idea, as he got a team working on a game that came surprisingly close to this idea, a game called City of the Dead.

Of course, its far from exactly what I mean, but its the closest thing. Unfortunately it never saw the light of day.

My question is, HOW IN THE HOLY HELL HAS A GAME LIKE THIS NOT BEEN MADE? It's seems like such an obvious thing for a developer to do, so why hasn't it happened?

Because people just want to shoot zombies in the head. They don't want to micro-manage a bunch of idiots and try to save everyone.

Fire Emblem. Where you do start with nothing and micro manage idiots to victory. Sacred Stones even has zombies.

Might be a fun game though.

Who said anything about saving them? You wouldn't have to do anything, your main goal would be to ensure your own survival. Shooting zombies in the head gets old real fast, as shown in Dead Rising. I had a gun and a lead pipe in my inventory, and I found myself preferring the pipe. Eh, bad example, its not really what you meant I guess. But you get my point, surviving can be fun, especially when you survive and shoot zombies in teh faec at the same time.

Left 4 Dead is a step in the right direction. I'd like to see elements from that game in a huge simulator like this.

Try this out. It isn't your "dream simulator" but it features a few things on your checklist.

Honestly, what you want probably won't happen for another 5+ years, because that's how long it'll take to make a game of that size :?

I could have sworn I saw an article on a game pretty much exactly like that, multiplayer Resident Evil, I thought. Guess not.

You did. ;)

It was in Game Informer. I can't remember the issue number though.

Yeah I might follow your instructions in the thread and try it out, it seems pretty cool :P

You just gave me another idea. What if, in the game, there were different options for the zombies? Like, do they run, do they shamble, do they die from bodyshots, headshots only? Everyone has their own idea of what a zombie takeover would be like, and there would be no better place to show this than in a sandbox game.

Ha! I may have Alzheimers, but I don't have Alzheimers! Was it a RE game, though, or something else? And I suppose it never actually came out.

It was one of their what if this developer made the next (insert series) game. You are correct, it was over Resident Evil.

The problem today is that content is hard coded, and not flexible. Designing such systems that can be made to make pretty much anything will take a long time, but once all of these systems that are flexible, and allow practically anyone to change the variables and states, then any kind of content will be possible. But for now we'll be stuck with ridiculously long development periods.

Actually Japan is already on this case, and not entirely sure about the rest of the world. It pretty much goes hand in hand with how advanced AI should work, but not as advanced...

So unless that ever comes around to being a mainstream thing, a game like this will take something like the Source engine Valve has, and a game that could allow for such a capability. To be honest Left 4 Dead and the DevKit pretty much could make this game that you've described, but it would just take a long period of time.

I think Resident Evil Outbreak is what you guys are talking about, and yeah, it's pretty much the game that OP wants but on a smaller scale. The people that fight for survive are just a small group, but they all have different abilities, etc.

Because not every company wants to focus on 80% non-multiplayer shooter games in this time anymore.

Multiplayer on this game is like the Zombie minigame on CoD5, just bigger.

I dont need a siggy no moar.

Who said it would have to be that focused on SP? This is a game that would more than make up the production cost EASILY, just because of the concept. And it would be especially fun to do co-op multiplayer like many people wanted but didn't get in Dead Rising. Zombie survival in co-op that is more about survival than L4D style gameplay would be nothing short of amazing. Now here's the real kicker. Because of what the core game would be, it would be fun to play on 360 and PS3, but what if the PC version developed a modding community? THAT would be epic, though the current closest thing to that is L4D.

Someone I know was working on making a mod for l4d which was sort of similar to cod5, in that you can build/repair defenses. The way the mod was going to work was it was a small city or something like that, with about 10 different multi-story buildings which you could go into. There were things you could pick up and make barricades out of (Like you can pick up propane tanks, I think it worked on the same principle of that, or of HL2's engine how you can pick up anything practically.). Once they were placed the physics for them would be altered, so it would be tough for zombies to get through, or they had to break it. He figured out the basics of how to do it, but it ended up being way to difficult to get everything to work out, and it ended up never being finished.

That would be an awesome game, and I really do wonder why we haven't had one console zombie survival game that was anything more than a shoot-em-up.

As far as I know, none exist at all.

Dead Rising isn't survival, and I don't think Fatal Frame was a zombie series. Creepy as hell though

Personally, I'd like to see a more modernized version of Dead Space as far as zombies go, although if someone could come up with a way to mix necromorphs with Left 4 Dead style zombies, they'd basically win the zombie survival genre. Put this in an area about the size of 5 states, mix in MMO capabilities (can play either single player, "dedicated instance" style multiplayer (players can enter/exit the game at will without affecting their teammates), or massive multiplayer), and you got something that should last at least a decade without slowing down. Update the graphics as necessary, and it should be able to last as long as we still use 2D screens for our gaming.
