why would you put symbols there? There shouldn't be ASCII in names, it's contradictory. Good choice by Jagex IMO, Names have never allowed that I don't see why suddenly without announcement they should. I understand foreign names have these symbols but it seems like something that will just be used for decoration (again, not what names are for...).

Nope, those aren't scandic symbols there. The proper ones are å/ä and ö, not with `'s or such :P

ya thats like more hispanic letters.

my guess those symbols would play havoc with some of the coding.

Since á isn't the same ascii as a or A. So searches for the name (ie joining CC or adding you to a friend/ignore list) would be extremely hit and miss, leading to issues more issues down the line.

Are you sure it's Jagex and not a "bad" friend?

I'm guessing they took it out as a name has to be easy to use for EVERYONE.

And not everyone can type symboled letters due to english keyboards or lack of symbol code knowledge.

As much as Jagex wants to have their game being in different languages it will always have a very English base to it. They have other languages to accomodate people yes, but there are still guidelines where it must stay in English.

It needs to be english characters because... that's all that's on my keyboard to report you with, of course.

I have a funny feeling it wasn't Jagex who changed it considering the "last name" would've been numbers.

Not everyone knows how to use alt key codes you know...

That's why Jagex changed it, it's far easier to type in English letters as most keyboards are like that.

I don't think Jagex themselves did it. They most likely have an automated system in place which changes letters with symbols to just letters once detected.

Being a java programmer, its rather hard to filter/detect every form of those fancy letters from other languages. Its in the best interest of everyone if your name was changed to normal letters.

Reasons :

-Reporting

-Clan chat

-Friends lists

-Behind the scenes systems (Jagex)

Detecting them isn't really non-trivial, but it's not complicated (Unicode characters ftw), but I think it was the right move - it would play havoc with reports and clan chat names.

...Alright, the Elf City update lured me back to RS over a year ago.

Well it was changed so it would be easier to report or add you as a friend or something. Most American keyboards don't have those letters with symbols on them, after all.

When they start making bigger keyboards with all those nice symbols on them you can have your name back.

Quest cape achieved 28 Dec, 2009, lost with Nomad's Requiem, re-obtained on 19 Mar 2010.

Fire cape achieved 1 Nov 2010.

Not really a problem.

I agree with Jagex's move.

If you have ever seen on those Friend Interviews on facebook, when one of your friend has a symbol like this, it turns into a weird code.

For example: Chéster Smith would be something like; Ch0o0ster smith.

Now, granted jagex is much more gifted at coding then facebook, but still errors like this could happen, so they probably changed your name to prevent from happening in the future.

Eventually if this proves to be the case, they can most likely fix it, so you will be able to have your name the way you want in no time :)

It's more likely in line with the whole other players not being able to report him.
