1 January 2008 - World 2

I was digging through some old files to delete to make room on my hard drive today.Specifically, I was looking through my old Hypercam clips, when I came across something I found interesting. It was a video of myself recording the last day of merchanting (thinking the update would be right at midnight GMT). The clip may be a little blurry, but one can tell what people are saying for the most part.

Also, please forgive the many spelling/grammar errors, I was only 13½ years old.

Last Day of Free Trade

What I noticed between the prices was that they have actually gone up for the most part, despite having an extra two years of new items flooding into the game. This plainly shows the detrimental effects of the inflation this year by PvP statues.

What items did you notice that changed greatly or stayed the same? Did anything surprise you?

If this is in the wrong section, please move it. If this does not belong on the forums, please lock/delete it.

The video's private.

Whoops, let me fix that. Thanks.

Price increases are caused by more than just over-hyped inflation.

Discontinued items get rarer as more people quit, and more desired as more people join the game.

More members means more nature runes, means cheaper nature runes, means more alching, means more total GP in the game, resulting in a general increase in prices.

And with GP being easier to come by, fewer people are gathering raw materials themselves, and are instead just buying it all, also resulting in higher item prices.

Threads like these remind me of my grandfather.

He always used to talk about walking to school through 12 feet of snow, uphill both ways, yadda yadda yadda. He would talk about being able to buy his lunch at the general store for 3 or 4 cents (bologna, crackers, candy). But he always neglected to say that he was also making about 25¢ a day.

Yes, prices have gone up. But so have "wages." It's all good.

Don't you just love the memories of saying "selling fury 3.25" although a guy has been standing next to you for half an hour saying "buying fury 3.2" and considering it a brilliant merchanting victory when they eventually give in and you earn that extra 50k

Good memories? I still have nightmares about having to stand in w2 fally typing my way to carpal tunnel. There are some great things to reminisce about in RuneScape - this ain't one of 'em.

As for the prices, I'm surprised to see so many items that actually are similar to what we have today - it's not like the economy back then is totally unrecognisable compared to today, which is the way some people make it seem.

That is what's more commonly known as an oppinion.

Fally park was personally the greatest feature of RS for me, I miss being able to stroll on down and make a few mill in my lunch break. Don't think I'll engage with anything in this game quite as I did with *actual* merchanting.

Ugh all this nostalgia tripping's just going to end in me liquidating my bank and start up flipping again *sigh* although there's less satisfaction in getting a bargain through the GE than player to player.

I was thinking of a former player who was considered rich and returned after an extended absence from the game. He liquidated his bank before quitting considering the deflation that should have happened. But this is RuneScape, and while many aspects of its economy mirror our own world (supply/demand), some parts are completely backwards (like finished products being worth less than raw materials).
