Assume Nothing
Okay, where should I start. Haliphobia, the irrational fear of bad breath. Bad breath affects everybody, I infact come across it everyday from family members and often teachers, but it's not easy to talk about it (I mean, even best friends don't usually tell you). I came across a video found almost anywhere on youtube; it's a promoted video called "Bad Breath Test - How to tell when your breath stinks" This also made me think - Does my breath really stink? It's basically an advert for a product named 'Orabrush', not yet available in the retail stores. It just costs a few dollars for this product, which I have actually tried and has worked for me. The mentioned vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFeb6YBftHE And lastly, a few questions in this topic for readers; What do you think about bad breath? Does your breath stink :o? What do you do to prevent bad breath? And last but not least - How does bad breath affect you? Personally, teachers will sometimes talk to me real close and the foulness of the bad breath is just horrid. Discuss.

RpgGamer
That sponge metaphor made me a bit quesy. Bad breath is rediculously gross. I've been told I have very neutral breath, in that it doesn't smell good or bad. But morning breath sucks for everyone. I just avoid eating foods what stick to teeth/gums/toungue. I had to give up Oreos and Maple syrup, but hey - Atleast my breath isn't lethal. I don't fear bad breath, but I strongly dislike it. In that it makes me kind of sick. Basically it's a very very soft, short brissled tooth brush, except alot wider and designed for the tongue so it doesn't damage the tissues in the tongue. It has worked well for me so far. The video itself has been out for at least 5 months, so I think most people will have seen it.
Pinkbullet3
I noticed something relatively simple. When I eat something small for breakfast (like a yogurt), my breath starts to smell about 1 hour later because I think the stomach has completely digested the yogurt and has nothing else to digest. Afterward, some odor comes up and out the mouth. Therefore, I try to get in enough during breakfast to get me near lunchtime (usually bread keeps me full for a few hours, like a bagel and a half). You definitely know that feeling when you're hungry. You basically taste nothing in your mouth and I think that's what contributes to bad breath. As for the fear of it? I don't have the fear of it, but when someone's talking to me and it's evident, I just try to subtly hold my breath and exhale until I can get another breath, lol. ^ Blog. Bad breath usually doesn't come from the stomach, the passageways are usually sealed somehow (wikipedia, forgot article). Things like yogurts are protein filled and tends to dry the mouth. Oxidation caused from a dry tongue and bacteria feeding off the proteins in the diary product would definately increase bad breath.
Lenticular_J
I used to be scared of smelling bad. Breath and body wise. Then, I realized I do more hygiene-wise than just about every other guy I know, I just don't have a very good sense of smell. And most people don't have the nicest breath, to be honest. Natural smell isn't beautiful or anything. But you don't really notice breath unless it's awful or great. Also: Halitosis is a completely fictitious disease, created for one of the very first mouthwash advertisements around the turn of the 20th century. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I agree, most people, no matter how pretty they are, will have bad breath. On the extreme cases of bad breath, it will also affect social life too. Even the chances of getting promoted in a job will be lowered, same goes for obesity.
fastortoise
Ever since my braces came off 2 years ago I've flossed every night & brushed every night and morning  . Iamdan
For bad breath rinse with diluted peroxide to kill bacteria, and try and make your mouth less acidic. Lemon works good for that. Drink heaps of water and breath in through your nose.
Azvareth
I always have gum on me. At uni everybody drinks either coffee or energy drinks, and a lot of it. So bad breath hangs in the air like a killer smog cloud. Luckily most people are aware of this and have gum on them.
Lateralus
Yeah I always carry chewing gum too. Between smoking and drinking coffee my breath would be pretty bad without a mint injection every now and then. My tongue has tasted terrible lately. La lune ne garde aucune rancune. obfuscator
Snacking on vegetables rather than sticky or junk food helps - I don't think I have terrible breath, but as OP says most aren't likely to tell you. I do notice it on people sometime, but I just try to ignore it. After all, there are worse things. Rainy_Day
Cannot stand people with bad breath, I keep my distance from them if I talk. I also can't bring myself to kiss anyone with bad breath, eurgh. But alike Lateralus, I keep gum on me just for good measure. I don't think I have a problem though. Knew one chap at school who seemed to never brush his teeth, and I had the displeasure of having him in my tutor group. Bad times. What makes it worse is sometimes they are amazingly attractive but kissing them would be epicly gross with the bad breath-taste.

Drink heaps of water and breath in through your nose. Holy crap! Peroxide? That's a bit overkill don't you think? Not too mention toxic? also, to those people that think gum helps - It doesn't. I have tons of people I talk to that tthink gum is an alternative to toothbrushing in the morning [or just becaues they're breath smells regardless] and it never works. Gum only makes breath worse in my opinion. I mean, while its fresh and your chewing its fine, but the second you spit that sucker out its Halitosis-ville with you. Iamdan
It says on the label that it can be used as a mouthwash, and I asked a doctor about it who said it's fine. Just dilute the 3% stuff further - 1/4 to 1/2 and the rest water.
Danqazmlp
I actually dislike minty breath on other people. I'm not sure whether it is the smell, or the fact that it means i am breathing in their breath, but I really dislike it. Neutral or no smell is the best. Morning breath is horrible but it is almost un-avoidable if you have a good nights sleep. Want to be my friend? Skull
As long as you don't swallow the peroxide you should be good to go. I used to have "bad breath" since I drank a cup of coffee every morning, post brushing since I took it o school with me. I don't drink the coffee anymore and brush more often, problem solved. Gum does help, provided it is the sugar-free variety which makes sure no carbohydrates are being broken down in your mouth which accompanies the ones with sugar. 99 Hits, Attack, Strength, Defence, Mage, Summoning, Slayer, Ranged, 96/99 Prayer
