marijuana legalization - thoughts?

Regarding the taxation of marijuana:

 

Will a lot of people grow it out of their basements/closets? Yes, and this should be legal so long as you have a license to do so. However, it's not going to be as big of a problem as you think, Shadow. Look, it's not that hard to brew your own beer, to roll your own cigarettes, or even to grow your own tobacco. So if none of these things are particularly difficult, especially rolling your own cigarettes, why are corporate alcohol and tobacco such lucrative businesses? Simple: people like convenience. This is observable in other areas as well. Why don't many people have their own gardens? Sure, a lot of people do, but by and large they buy at the grocery store or farmer's market.

 

Hell, why do people go to BARS rather than just buy beer/wine/liquor for their houses? Bars are very expensive, yet people still drink there. It's just for convenience, man.

 

And I know one thing is for sure, one thing that's in competition with convenience is legality, and most people are not going to risk their own skin obtaining the drug through illegal means when there's a damned corner store selling it over the counter.

 

Plus, if weed was legalised (and therefore a corporate product) it would be more competatively priced which would discourage homegrowing because of the expense in doing so.

But oh well. The legalization of weed is something I am on strict neutrality over. I don't care who wins either side.

Not to veer off-topic, but I've debated with myself for a long time now whether cigarettes should be legal or not, and I still haven't come to any conclusion. Cigarettes themselves do pretty much zero good except for creating jobs, so why not abolish them? But then why should the government be allowed to make the choice for us? Etc etc.

People have a tendency to blame the government for their troubles when they don't feel they're at fault, so I guess the government feels the need to intervene or face troubles from its citizens. Also, cigarettes are a huge moneymaker for the states. :???:

 

As for whether to abolish them, I always think of what happened during Prohibition. Though I don't have too much knowledge on Prohibition, I know that if something as widespread as cigarettes will be banned, things start to happen.

ok, but SHOPS SELLING IT can tax it. it WILL get the hell taxed out of it when its legalized.

that's my point.. why would people pay so much more for something they can just buy from the neighborhood gardener?

 

There should be a license to sell - much like tobacco and alcohol. Sure you can buy tobacco and alcohol from people you meet on the street, but that's illegal, hopefully it's much the same here. Making beer is pretty common, it's just that the people making it are usually old enough to know it's for personal use and not for profit.

 

And I heard marijuana is a hard plant to grow, so if the price is good enough it would be much easier to buy from a "weed store" with a large supply than a neighbour with a small supply.

 

 

On topic though: it should be legal, although I don't know what kind of effect it will have on the economy.

However, I do advocate that ALL drugs, ALL, should be decriminalized. That's step one. Step two is to legalize drugs such as marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, ecstasy and LSD/acid. The remainder of the drugs shouldn't be legalized outright, but should be decriminalized. Eventually, once the education of the American public about drugs has gotten better, the remainder should then be made legal.

to get back on topic (kinda)...bud / shrooms should be legalized,maybe even x. but i dont think lsd or acid should. maybe its just 1:50 am/ 5 hours of sleep saying this, but i really dont see why the government should have a say in what we do to our bodys. they should just say [bleep] it and legalize all the drugs. if we want to throw our lives down the drain by doin coke, then let us. if we want a way to escape from reality , let us. dont stop us.

My friend said she saw a study of sorts that showed that in Amsterdam, where weed is legal Lawyers get paid the lowest in the world, even more so than in Africa. IN America they get paid the most, where weed is legal. Discuss i guess idk.

Economically for it, Morally against it. If people could handle it, then I'd consider it to be an okay concept to legalize. But unfortuantly, there will always be [wagon]es ruining it for everyone else. I'm strictly against legalization. I'm sure most of OT knows this by now.
