The pictures thread..

Lately, the pictures thread have been filled with nothing but spam, and very few actual pictures. People are flaming, spamming, trolling, and it seems to me that the mods can do nothing to stop it.

What can we do to make this stop? I'm sure I'm not the only one here enjoying that thread (well, used to), and I think the solution is fairly simple. Zybez' forums have a rule on their bank pics thread; any post that does not contain a bank picture (you're allowed to comment on the pictures, but you must provide one yourself, also called "un-spam" in our pictures thread) is deleted.

 

How about we implement this into that particular thread? This way, we could click the link, and we would see pictures, and not useless posts discussing/flaming/trolling the actual pictures.

 

With the amount of spam on there, it's impossible to report all of the posts.

 

I think it would solve the problem.. I miss the "old" thread :(

I also support this change, pictures/video/sounds only. Even if I don't post something in there myself, I usually go there to check out some cool things that people have done.

Lately I would agree the pictures thread has lost some of it's quality, but forcing people to post a picture every time they post is not a good idea; specifically un-spam pictures. A lot of un-spam pictures are considered worse than text spam, just because it can be an extremely pointless picture, and rating picture quality is a very bad idea.

 

I think it's fine to post a comment about a picture, if the comment is off-topic, it's spam and it's against the rules. If the comment is considered flaming, it's against the rules. Unfortunately I think the mods just have to be stricter about users posts until the thread shapes up...

I see your point, but from what I've seen on RSC, the people who post don't post "un-spam" pictures. They actually post contributing pictures, which makes the thread better. I cheer everytime I see a new post on there (pixels =P~ ).

 

Yeah, I guess it's up to the mods atm :P

I am in total support. Even though I rarely post pictures on that thread, I still dislike looking at a page and a half of nothing but spam aganist other players and no pictures what so ever.

I disagree because, as said before, the 'unspam' pictures are often worse than simple text. It is especially annoying when users post meaningless pictures (in-game) while having something typed in the chatbox. I'm sure many of you have seen them, "Hi I am _____ and this is my pony/Godsword/Bunyip/etc."

Yes, this is a problem, but those particular pictures are posted with a context being flaming/trolling/some irrelevant discussion. If there are rules of no posts without pictures, there are no context to base those un-spam pictures on.

 

Nonetheless, only a fraction of the posters posts those images, and it would be easy to keep up with for the mods.

I would put that in the class of useless posts, same as picture-less posts with nothing to contribute to the purpose of the thread.

 

Although, one could argue that it was a genuine post for X time, I suppose it would be a matter of judgement?

That's why we wouldn't want a system of rating pictures; no one wants to judge each picture on whether or not it's worthy, and why requiring un-spam pictures is not a good idea.

Torn on this as well- on a couple flightsim forums I visit they have a the same rule and it works great. I say give it a try.

I kinda agree.

 

If anything, I'd say just make sure the post is relevant, VERY relevant. I mean, what if I wanted to comment on a picture, but had none of myself? While it will cut down on spam, it will also discourage non malicious posters from simply posting.

That's not going to happen for a number of reasons. Really, it's the same as usual.

 

First off, it involves some pretty extensive code changes to the forum. Which kills it dead already.

Second of all, it would be subject to extreme abuse.

Third, it has the potential to make discussion very unfair. Kind of related to #2, but not necessarily intentional. Also, kind of unrelated, but YouTube has some of the absolute worst comments, of course it has improved vastly since the comment system updates.

This. Putting the extensive coding factor aside, this system could be heavily abused. People could give posts a low rating just because they don't like the user, etc. In the end, it would just make more work for the moderators and I don't like what it would do to the community.

why. Can't it just be cleaned up and moded a bit more closer before we go requiring a picture be included? Obviously its been brought to attention now just pay closer attn to it.

Have you seen the amount of spam on there?

I don't know how mods delete posts, but with that gazillion irrelevent posts I'm sure it can't be done quickly.

I imagine a report must be filed for each post stating why it was deleted, or at least something vaguely in that ballpark.

 

But yea I just went and checked out the thread, so much spam. But tbh, the idea of the thread invites spam, even if done benignly.
