When you think about that, it sounds more and more stupid each time you think about it. People under 13 see so many other people talk that seeing a few more people talk will do nothing. But the really horrible part is, when getting membership, there used to be the option to use free chat, I selected that and could use free chat like everyone else. Then one day, Jagex removed that option, silencing all people under 13, leaving nobody to complain about it.

As far as i can tell, jagex has no way to know how old you are. I no say'n nothin.

If you weren't completely developmentally delayed (save the censor some work :rolleyes:) , you'd realize that any seven year old can figure out to put their age as above 13, and that people under 13 generally talk like morons and insult people 24/7. Plus if they're stupid enough to put their real age under 13, they're stupid enough to need to be muted.

Lying on the internet is easy. Jagex thinks I'm 24 because I told them I was 18 when I made my account at 14 years old. Here's the funny part, I just turned 20.

Age is not a good indication of maturity, except for kids under like eleven or ten - then they're just talking about crap no one wants to hear.

You people say that age isn't a factor, but look at you. Lying about your age, trying to pass yourself off as an adult, it's not worth doing.

If you get bullied on the interbuttz, you GET OVER IT. It's people you don't even know, saying stupid things they don't know, about you who might not even live in the same country.

 

 

It could even be considered natural selection. If you go so far as to kill yourself over what happened because some random is insulting you, it's YOUR fault.

 

And it is worth doing, it lets us play RS without quickchat only. At least we have the intelligence to do that. :razz:

It does protect them from other people. It prevents young and inexperienced-at-life players from being tricked by older players just trying to take advantage of them. Granted, that's not been much of a worry since Jagex imposed the trade limits, but could still be exploited by nefarious individuals with less than pure intentions while playing a game full of kids who are barely teenagers.

 

There are a lot of creepy people in the world, and a lot of young (and old) people who think the internet makes them completely anonymous and safe so they give out personal details to people who really shouldn't have them.

 

It's my theory that the quick chat age restrictions aren't to prevent other people from saying the wrong thing to you, they're to prevent you from saying the wrong thing to other people.

Given some of the people in this thread, I'm perfectly alright with them not being able to talk in-game.

It may be true that some Runescape players are gullible and clueless, and are better off being unable to speak. It may also be true that some users are immature brats and should be prevented from speaking for the betterment of everyone else. However, these two groups are not the same as the group of players that is younger than 13 years old. Preventing these younger players from speaking normally accomplishes nothing, it's dehumanizing, and it prevents younger players from enjoying the social aspects of this game, thus ensuring that they won't grow up into subscribing members.

 

Though, apparently this is something that Jagex has to do to meet some legal obligation. I'm foggy on the details.

There would be no rant if I could post there, because quick chat restricted users cannot use the forums. There should be an IQ test and if you pass you can use free chat. If you fail, you can't use free chat unless you provide a good reason to jagex why you failed the test. It would filter out lots of annoying random people, and also, allow people under 13, that have a brain bigger than a peanut, to use quick chat. And also, it would stop bot accounts from being made completely by bots, reducing the amount of botting a little bit.

who would it filter out? if someone annoys you, ignore them.

people under 13 can be geniouses but simply do not have the MATURITY to be able to speak ingame. it has nothing to do with brain power. we're not talking about preventing mentally challenged people from talking, we're talking about immature little kids.

an IQ test would stop accounts being made completely by bots? theres something called a captcha if you haven't noticed. an IQ test would only be a ridiculous burdon on players.

Maybe jagex restricts thirteen year olds to quick chat to protect the thirteen year olds from themselves, not from "other" people. Also, talking to people in this game isn't that fun to begin with on most occasions!

No, but wanting to ask someone a basic question, and not being able to is quite aggravating
