need some drinking advice

It also depends largely on how fast you consume these drinks. For example last night was a graduation party, so some friends and myself started a massive game of flipcup. In this game you consume alcohol very quickly in a short period of time. I was feeling good the first 9 beers, then I hit a bump in the road, along with most people, but we needed more beer so we took like 10 or 15 minutes to all get our beer back. The next 11 beers went down smoothly, but I began to feel drunk. Then our game got shut down since a ton of minors had gathered to watch and partake, so we had to go back to just casual drinking. I ended up sobering up by 5am since we were now drinking much slower.

Over time you'll get used to your own limits and should probably get a better idea with experience. Plus your tolerance will go up so you shouldn't have much trouble.

But if you really want to look cool and impress your friends you should get everyone to take beer shots. Last party I was at I had 10 beer shots and got sooo waaasted man. I'm never having that many beer shots again LOL

(to avoid coming off as a troll, I should to say to ignore that :P )

I was about to rip right through you, thanks for the post script. In all honesty I suggest the OP to limit himself/herself to 2 beers a night. I've been overboard far too many times (recently, 4 out of 4 nights) and it's not fun. I currently can't eat or drink anything without throwing up. My head is constantly throbbing, my brain is too big for my skull, i'm sore from getting sucker punched in the ribs, and I didn't get any worthwhile action since I was too drunk. Now that i'm 20 I feel that bragging rights are really not important and that I should focus on having fun and not how much I can drink in a night. Soemtimes it's not fun being sober while everybody else is smashed, but most of the time there's a DD which you can converse with.

Overall beer has been one of my best friends, but I regret going overboard so many times. If you really want to know your limits do it once, maybe twice, but it's not worth it after that. 1-2 beers will take the edge off (5-6 for me nowadays) and that's all you really need.

Some simple advice I'll offer to anyone new to drinking.

1) If possible avoid mixing, I can handle 10 pints fine, but 6 pints and a knaggin of spirts (adds up to 10 pints total) will mess me up big time. Try to stick to one specific style of drink throughout the night, if you're body is used to absorbing say 5% drinks and all of a sudden it gets hit with a large amount of 40%, it's going to break that down fast as it's still used to the 5%.

2) You're new to drinking, don't try to out drink / match those who have been drinking for years, you'll more than likely make a fool of yourself since you can't handle your drink, they can. Start off small and don't fall into the drunk trap where it's always "I feel ok, I'll have one more". Happened to me plenty of times, usually ends with a hangover and some embarrassing story. Start small, maybe 3-4 beers a night and go up 1 every 2 weeks maybe until you've found your limit.

3) Try to drink on a full stomach, this will slow down the rate alcohol is metabolized meaning you don't get drunk very quickly and you'll also have to pace yourself, if you start downing drinks on a full stomach, both the drink and food is more than likely coming back up.

4) When you get home drink a liter of water, then bring a liter of water up to your room and leave it by your bedside. This will prevent most hangovers but it will also means there's water there if you get the 4ams. Nothing is worse than the 4ams, you wake up, mouth absolutely parched dry and you need a drink, but you're still slightly drunk and not arsed to get out of bed. If you do usually wake up at 4am it's your body looking for water, so it's a good idea to have it there beside you.

"getting drunk" is very much a psychological thing. Scandinavian tests have Scandinavians getting very drunk on alcohol-free beer, and not drunk at all on alcohol, when they are led to believe they're drinking the other kind. Of course, heavy intakes give different results, but if you think you're getting drunk, you'll act more like you are drunk.

a lot of other good advice has been posted already.

I have no drinking experience, but that happens to me with energy drinks.

I'll have a good 3-4 full sized pisses out of every can of those.

However, Powerade on the other hand makes me pee like a race horse like 8 times a day after one glass. eusa_think.gif

Yes, it's a diuretic (Definition) as said earlier in the topic. Just don't break the seal and you'll be fine

Alcohol and caffeine are both diuretics and will make you pee.

For me personally, I don't get a stomach ache unless I either drink way too much and get sick, or if I drink a moderate amount on an empty stomach. Even a few drinks if I haven't eaten give me a pretty bad stomach ache.

Yeah man, the longer you hold in that first piss the better off you will be for the night.

Empty stomach means the drink will act faster.

Also "standard drink" means nothing its what alcohol is IN the drink that matters. Beers are generally pretty weak and you can drink several, but then something like vodka is dam strong and will hit you harder.

Also different people react differently to various drinks, for example I can drink loads of vodka without getting totally hammered; but wine goes straight to my head and I'm staggering about after a couple of glasses.

Standard drink does have a meaning, it's just used incorrectly. In Australia a standard drink is any drink containing 10 grams of alcohol. On the sides of all drinking containers in Australia it says how many standard drinks it is. For my birthday I bought a 700ML bottle of Whiskey, which was 22 standard drinks, the same amount of Toohey's New (a beer) would be something like 2.5 standard drinks. The formula for how many standard drinks is in the container; volume of container in litres x % alcohol by volume x 0.789. I see that this guideline is useful for all. Although if you can accurately say how many standard drinks you've had then you're not drinking right. Or should be in Vegas counting cards.

You Aussies have an insane system for alcohol content. In the states we have the "proof" system. while you guys are multiplying by .789 [wth kind of number is that anyway?] all we have to do is divide by 2. 30 proof Jack? that's 15% alcohol.

You Aussies have an insane system for alcohol content. In the states we have the "proof" system. while you guys are multiplying by .789 [wth kind of number is that anyway?] all we have to do is divide by 2. 30 proof Jack? that's 15% alcohol.

Here in uk bottles just state volume of alcohol and units. Even thou in pretty much every single drink 1% = 1 unit, but then thes facts n crap ur taught bout units like how many units you should limit urself to per week etc, how long the body takes to process 1 unit (i think it was 1 hour but i never remember) and drunk driving is measured in units. (the breath test aint but they tell you you can drink x units before being over the limit, don;t think its even a whole unit).

Also given it was an American posting and no-one but aussies uses "standard drinks" as a measure of alcohol content, it was meaningless.

You were saying that standard drink was useless, I'm saying it's not.

.789 is the specific gravity of ethanol. (No idea wtf that means.)

We have so many insane things towards alcohol because the only real past time we have is getting wasted. In NSW they've set laws on lock out times and when places have to close. They're also very unlikely to let you in to places if you have any signs of drug use or may have had more than enough drinks. My friend has been refused entry to a club because he had red eyes and they thought he was drunk, even though he'd been up working since 5:30 that day and hadn't had a drink since the previous weekend. I've heard of people being refused entry for having slightly dilated pupils from some disease they've had because some drugs also cause pupil dilation.

He is AMERICAN therefore for him to say "standard drink" means nothing making it useless to us in seeing why different amounts at diff parties made him feel sick. As he was not using the aussie system being an AMERICAN
