need some drinking advice

Defy

Recommended Posts

well im kinda new to drinking, but theres been a [cabbage] load of partys lately and ive been on the piss for the past 5 weekends, but i have some questions

i am quite confused on this...

at one party i have say. 1 or 2 standard drinks and i start to feel sick

where as at another party i have 8+ and i feel fine....

then at another party same thing i start feeling sick after 1 or 2...

is it to do with what i eat before the party or what im drinking? because ive been trying alot of different alcohols to see what i like lol...

yeah just some friendly advice please for an inexperienced drinker...

cheers

:)

You will feel alcohol more if you start drinking on an empty stomach. So, if for some reason you feel like spending lots more money on a night, eat a decent meal beforehand.

Some alcohol will simply affect you more than others, even if you're drinking comparitively the same amount, e.g. one standard drink of scotch will affect me significantly more than one standard drink of beer. A lot of people say that mixing different types of alcohol in a single night will also make the alcohol have a greater effect on you.

The final think to consider is, of course, how quickly you're drinking it. Common sense really; the more time you take to drink, the more time the alcohol has to be absorbed by your body.

An additional note is that, unless you particularly like feeling hungover, drink a reasonable amount of water in comparison to how much you drink. Alcohol is a diuretic, and as such can cause you to expell more water than is necessary. This can make you dehydrated in a night of drinking, which is a major cause of hangovers.

Though you didn't necessarily request this advice, I might just say that I find it generally unnecessary to get drunk when I have just as much, or even more fun when I'm just tipsy. I tend to just having a few drinks to get myself slightly tipsy, then having one drink every hour afterwards to keep myself at that state. You say you're an inexperienced drinker, so it's something to consider.

Cool.

Empty stomach means the drink will act faster.

Also "standard drink" means nothing its what alcohol is IN the drink that matters. Beers are generally pretty weak and you can drink several, but then something like vodka is dam strong and will hit you harder.

Also different people react differently to various drinks, for example I can drink loads of vodka without getting totally hammered; but wine goes straight to my head and I'm staggering about after a couple of glasses.

Don't mix drinks if you're an amateur, also find something you like. Drinking on an empty stomach will cause the alcohol to be processed faster and all at once, getting you drunker sooner. If you eat it will last longer and effect you less.

About being able to drink 8+ 1 night and 1-2 another, I'm assuming they were different drinks? If so, the one where you could only drink a couple just isn't your drink then.

Intriguing summed it up pretty good.

Some of my friends drink a glass or two of milk before going out as it's said to slow down the alcohol absorption or something. I've not noticed much of a difference when i've done it but they swear by it so it might be worth a shot.

Never drink on an empty stomach and eating something greasy and fatty during your night out always helps as well.

Was it the same kind of drink you were having when you were feeling sick each time? For me, certain kinds of alcopops and really sugary vodka mixes make me feel sick instantly so i just avoid drinking them altogether.

It could really be anything. What you ate, the type of drink, if you're moving around a lot during drinking, the temperature of the drink, how fast you drink, and even what mood you're in. Try experimenting with different variables to find out what it really is.

Yeah, that's a funny thing. I can drink shot after shot of whiskey and only feel a nice buzz, but after like 6 Natural Ices I'm ready to call it a night lol.

Hmm I have the same thing with beer, sometimes I start to feel bad after 2-3 beers and sometimes I can do 7-8 without feeling sick or anything. Problem is that in the 2nd case I usually have to throw up after I've gone to bed, no idea what my problem is. I can either not stand alcohol, carbon dioxide (I think thats in beer too) or both. It's probably the alcohol since I also get nauseous from vodka. Pretty annoying but meh you get used to it.

What the [bleep] are you talking about ?

Are you saying there's a difference between a shot of Vodka and a shot of Tequila ?

Yes different types of alcohol have different volumes/concentrations (the percentage of pure alcohol in the drink)

Your standard vodka is around 35%-37%

Tequila is usually 38% - 40%

Then alchopops can be as low as 2 or 3%

Most beers are somewhere around 12%

So to your question specifically not a huge amount of difference between a shot of Vodka and Tequila, but Tequila is marginally stronger.

Wow, anything over 6% is considered high here in America. Lucky blokes.

Beers are a hard one to give one rough figure for they vary a lot.

I've seen some push close to 20%, and others down as low as 2%

If you have a glass of water with every drink, you'll notice a huge difference in your sobriety (and how bad of a hangover you have the next morning). And if you're going out every night, you might want to start working out even more. My brother made that mistake, and now he's having a lot of trouble working off more than twenty pounds, mostly from alcohol. And the eating that often follows.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

That water thing isn't really that good a tip.

All you're doing is diluting your blood which makes u need to pee more and gives you a false sense of sobriety which can cause you to get much drunken than you mean too AND let you get yourself to a state of alcohol poisoning without realising.

Plus diluted blood means if you do have a drunken accident you will bleed much more; which can be dangerous.

If you do feel sick or overly drunk it is a good idea to have some water to sober you up a bit, but not between every drink regardless; also good to drink water at end of night before you crawl into bed as hangovers are related to dehydration that alcohol causes (partly atleast)

Why is that?

I'm not 100% but I'm fairly sure the bacteria in milk react with alcohol and causes at the very least stomach cramp/pain

My friends say drinking milk "lines" your stomach which slows down the absorption of alcohol or something. I'm almost sure this is a myth as the milk just acts like water or any other non-alcoholic drink by diluting the alcohol when it's in your stomach which slows down absorption. I've never heard anything about bacteria in milk reacting with alcohol however.

If you don't have set times where you go to bed and when you eat then that would be the issue.

Edit: I know a lot of people who drink a lot of beer and milk not for any other reason than the fact that they love beer as much as milk... i think it's something in my family :D Incl me.

Never did mixing beer with milk upset our stomach.

Not much more can be added to this thread that hasn't already been said except for exaggerated drinking stories but I'll throw in a few tips for you. If you're afraid of throwing up, stick to beer. From what I've seen, many inexperienced drinkers go hog wild with the mixed drinks without knowing what they're getting into and end up getting their stomachs pumped or vomming their guts out for hours. But if you want to drink mixed drinks, just drink them slow and mix them light. I know 50/50s sounds like a good idea, but it's really not. And finally, absolutely know what proof or % alcohol your liqour is. And just to be safe, don't let anyone but yourself mix your drinks. It sounds cheesy but you'll never be sorry.

Over time you'll get used to your own limits and should probably get a better idea with experience. Plus your tolerance will go up so you shouldn't have much trouble.

But if you really want to look cool and impress your friends you should get everyone to take beer shots. Last party I was at I had 10 beer shots and got sooo waaasted man. I'm never having that many beer shots again LOL

(to avoid coming off as a troll, I should to say to ignore that :P )

Throwing up from too much booze is part of growing up.
