Discovered this on my way to the Living Rock Caverns. It's a red, zamorak-themed portal, with a standard examine. It was not there last week, when I went to LRC last. Nor is it part of the new quest, Void Stares Back and to my knowledge no update in the past week has added a portal there.

 

In addition, entering the portal simply makes you climb down the rope to the LRC.

 

I know how much TIF'ers like to speculate, especially on leaked stuff like this. So, what do you think about it? Anything to do with the strange tremor? Is its being a Zamorakian portal important? Discuss.

I'm quite sure it was because you couldn't access the rope after last week's update, so they added the portal so you could go down there.

This reminds me a bit of the red portal showing near the stairs to greater demons in Karamja dungeon way back when. Iirc that one was just another "move from lvl a to lvl b" portal, ust like the stairs it was next to aswell.

Cos Jagex screwed with the mines, the rope to the LRC and the shortcut in the mines are broken.

jagex did something similar for the mos le harmless bridge shortcut, when it was broken.

It's nothing to do with Zamorak or any secrets. It's just the same portal they use as a quick temporary fix whenever a bug makes a staircase or something inaccessable. They used it for the Mos Le'Harmless bridge and for some stairs in Brimhaven Dungeon.

As everyone else said its just a temp fix, however that little portal has resulted in many banned bots, just like the wall change good job jagex in making ways to combat bots (entirely by accident)

 

Maybe not an accident, they did it to wilderness ditch pointlessly now this, next they should replace fishing spots with polar bears and ban some fishing bots

Interesting, i'm wondering if this is an intentional strategy. It's got to be superficial at best, since they are only catching bots for a day or so. But in terms of public perception, this could make Jagex look really good - since most of the bot-fighting is extremely behind the scenes regularly, and this adds a community aspect to Jagex's efforts.

Now if there was a permanent marker tree under Aubury, or a nature rune spawn in a room next to ct green dragons... I miss the old days of luring aggressive NPCs to level 3 bots :thumbsup:

 

As for the portal, yeah it's just a temporary replacement. As soon as it's fixed, bots will crowd around once again.

Not to go all off-topic, but wouldn't it be possible to make a random event like say the school one. Instead of the doors being colored different colors, would it be possible to make them all the same color but with different shapes and give them all the same "ID number". If that were possible, would bots be able to determine which to pick?

Probably, remember the bots weren't designed to deal with a portal instead of a rope for entry, whereas if a random event was changed to be like that, all the bot programs would be changed to take that into account.

 

Not that I know much about writing bots, but through common sense, if you know your enemy's strategy, it's easy to counter it.

It sounds like jagex should change the entrances to heavily botted areas occasionally just to pwn bots.

That it would. Keep in mind, any permanent change is something the bots would adapt too.

We, or rather Jagex, might have found a serious weakness in bots, and it can be exploited a lot. Bots can't handle changes where they're used to something permanent. I approve.

 

If they can make these elements change more frequently than the time it takes for the programmers to recode their bots and have them do work, Jagex will have the upper hand. How to go about it though, I don't know.
