On another note, who is more obsessed with the royal family? Us Brits, Amercians, Canadians? I hear the British Monarchy is much more of a big thing outside of the UK, am i right? - why is this?

Because were dumbfounded on why you still have a government based on the feudal system. :razz:

American couldn't care less, in my personal experience. Not counting political factors such as a liberal PM, I don't get why other people care about other countries governments. Someone once told me"omg _________________ won the election!" In some country that was of no consequence to me. I'm not saying that's the case with Britain at all, I personally don't care about the Royal family, as I can't stand the idea of Royalty. Although I am correct in saying they're mainly just for looks correct? The PM still makes most of the decisions?

The thing is, in a way, they are a fail-safe. If we somehow managed to get a power hungry government which decided to go into a full war with another country, the Royal family could theoretically stop it.

 

It is a system which has been refined over hundreds of years. You have to remember that our governmental system was one of the first if not the first to use a monarchy and a parliament. It was formed before many other governments in the world, specifically the American system which I could call just as strange in that it keeps going back to a document written hundreds of years ago for things which are not relevant to today.

 

It works, and it seems to work well. Once we get a younger King in William, we may actually see him use some of his power.

 

It is a very big deal, especially considering how big his mother was. Can Kate live up to the expectations of what came before? I hope she does. In an interview they did today, they looked madly in Love and seemed much more comfortable than his Father and Mother were.

Anyway, on that subject matter, I've never thought very much about the royal family. I've always kinda thought they were okay, just there for show (which is true, really) and that they bring tourists in - which is nice - and that's about it. They have no real power.

I was pretty excited when I read the news this morning. There just one of those couples you have to be happy for.

Can't say I'm the biggest fan of our Royal Family but I wish them all the best.

Eh? The Monarchy didn't encourage the Nov 5th plot, it was partly an attempt to kill King James. Brush up on history.

I do remember the Queen having to accept Cameron as the new PM, but other than that I dunno. I don't think the monarchy have done anything 'real' with their power in a long time, but I suspect constitutionally they still could have some sort of power - it's just never used.

Yea I was discussing it with my dad, he said the Royal Family can get the PM fired with ease, if they really wanted to.

Not a huge thing in Canada really.

Just as I would not speculate on British politics as an American, I would hope you would do the same courtesy. Yes, the televised idiots who happen to have enough financial power to throw their hats into the ring (I'm looking at Palin specifically) might say things like that, but that is not the only interpretation of the Constitution that others have. It's just the only one people hear about, because it's the easiest to mock. Like you sort of have, really.

I wouldn't know. Personally, I don't see it getting much local news coverage other than another juicy tidbit to gnaw on for an hour or two before hearing about how Kanye stole the mic from Obama, or something equally silly. There's not a lot of diverse news coverage here on TV on a local level.
