It's not really a riot, it's been impressively peaceful so far.

Well it's still going to be his government, except he's swapping out all his players. I'm with you Dizzle, it's giving the protesters a false victory but it'll be interesting to see how they respond in the coming hours/days.

Peaceful? As already mentioned buildings have been torched, the internet turned off and the police have disappeared. While not quite a civil war these protests are far from peaceful.

CNN keeps calling it a revolution, and it's starting to get on my nerves. Hopefully a moderate democracy will be put in place, but I fear that a radical Islamic government could take power instead.

I'd imagine it would have escalated since then; I've been following the story for a while.

 

EDIT: I just heard someone say this:

But as of now I've seen no sources to indicate either. Does anyone know if either of those are at all true?

I hope it all gets sorted out, i would hate living in a country controlled in that way. Also i see Al Jazeera as "the news as it is" while mostly what i get it "the news that gets the most ratings twisted around to make us seem good".

The protesters know that it's [cabbage]. The only way they will stop voluntarily is if Mubarak himself steps down

There hasn't really been any real violence except for one person being shot by police. Police vans were completely empty before being burned, and the party's HQ should be expected to be burned. They aren't going around looking for fights, they're just assembling and protesting. There hasn't even been any big clashes with police. Hell, the police and protesters have been stopping EVERYTHING to do their prayers in mid-protest (although the last prayer some cops shot tear gas at some people finishing praying, didn't start anything though)

on that note, the christians were protecticing the muslims while they prayed, and viceversa. Only in revolution can they unite lol. Also, I enjoyed the mutual care over the internation museum in Cairo that was human shielded by the protesters.

From my understanding of it after reading Reddit and the New Yorker over the past week, the powder keg was the ineffective and corrupt government, Wikileaks was the cord (they revealed a lot of corruption in the Middle East, including Egypt), and the spark was the riots in nearby Tunisia, Lebanon, and other Middle Eastern countries.

 

The rioters are largely young artists and journalists and it appears to be a movement to the left.

 

The Egyptian government has been limiting access to the outside world (internet, smart phones, etc.) by shutting down ISPs operating in Egypt, including international ones.

 

There HAS been violence, and plenty, especially from the police sent in to prevent the riots. Many non-Egyptian journalists have brought home reports of being beaten, loaded onto a truck, robbed, and kidnapped, all by the local police.

You should of seen Al Jazeera air the real effects of the war in the Middle East, the bombings, the roads, all live tv. My family is Moroccan, which is a location on the north west coast of Africa, and we've always had Al Jazeera. Actually right now my mom said that the protesters said they're not stoping till Mubarek steps down or they force him out.

One of two things is going to happen. Either Mubarek steps down and goes into exile or he gets killed.

I really want to see the Egyptian Ministry of the Interior be taken over by protesters. It's already been an epic battle with those police stations. Also a coup would be nice.

Ya, I'm just laying back watching everything :rolleyes: Chaos is beautiful.

The stupid thing is that no matter what happens to him, as long as the National Democratic Party is still the only party in the Egyptian political system, nothing will change.

 

Same party, different "leader". #-o
