After reading the '5 Worst People' thread, I got wondering.

What kinds of thing make someone a bad person?
What groups of people would you consider bad people?
Why?

Someone who infringes on the rights of others for their own gain or for amusement.

Most people got into that top 5 thread by genocide. So, yeah, the urge to commit genocide tends to be a less desirable quality.

Basically any desire to cause harm to another person for whatever reason would make someone more bad of a person, though not necessarily a bad person.

Uhm, what do you mean "groups of people?"

Also, based on this video and larger considerations I've been considering whether there really is, or should be, a "good-bad" dichotomy based on morality. Certainly there are harmful people, and people who commit horrifying acts that the world would be better without, but "bad" is not universal and the notion that some people are just plain "bad" can lead to potential disasters.

A bad person is someone who's own deeds affect others in a negative way. Even when unaware.

-Someone who steals from others.
-Insults others for no apparent reason other then self gratification.
-Vandalizes or destroys property without just cause.
-Bragging and putting down others.
-Rude to other people.
-Playing favorites. Treating a specific group of people (or person) better than another group of people.
-Using personal status to manipulate others less fortunate. For instance, giving money to
the homeless in exchange for doing something humiliating or dangerous.
-Exploiting an opportunity. Selling out, Blackmailing, etc.

On the contrary, someone who's deeds DON'T affect others directly can be bad in a way too, for ex:

-Someone who's lazy.
-Stupid and tries to not admit and fix it. (denial)
-People who do not take things for granted. (Someone who complains that: they always eat veggies for
dinner, their car gets scratched and damaged all the time, arguing when people are only trying to help you.)
-A celebrity, jock, or any high stature person who is smug and denies his or her flaws. Only admits perfection.
-A person who has no dignity. Always chasing celebrities, favors only one type of music/T.V./games.

Extremes can be bad too. Even when some are perceived as "good".

-Being too kind. Some may think it's only for the sake of gaining praise.
-Too honest. Nobody wants to hear an opinion that'll offend them.
-Getting very good grades/ having a very good job/ having tons of friends...May put other's down, arose jealousy,
and in the worse case scenario, it may threaten you.
-Someone who is completely selfless. Neglecting your own comforts is just as bad or even worse.

I agreed with everything else on your list except this. Having all those things doesn't make you bad, but bragging about it, showing it off (as you said above), is bad.

Bragging about it or being jealous of someone else for those things. Jealousy, not good.

Of course, by that list, I'm a bad person. But I don't mind.

That's where you get the idea for genocide.

How is only favoring one style of musik a bad quality? I mean, I have a couple genres I enjoy...but as long as ppl can respect genres they don't enjoy, I see no problem.

Infringe on someone elses rights for their own gain. Whether its popular support, amusement, etc.

People who commit genocides are seen as the worst because they take away the most peoples rights in the worst possible ways.

Also I found a quote.

In law a man is guilty when he violates the rights of others. In ethics he is guilty if he only thinks of doing so

Anyone who is a detriment to the progress of society

Progress of society is so loaded and so subjective to the society you live in. Certainly in germany in 1940 there were many within society that thought that the holocaust was bad but didnt speak up because they would have been seen as a detriment to their society.

At the end of the day social opinions dont make someone good or bad, its whether you impede on someone elses rights.

Not to sound corny but I will quote what I think are "inalienable" rights that you probably have heard a million times (now a million and one) throughout your life.

Life [obviously murders are bad in any culture]
liberty [lots of examples of majorities tyrannizing people. Classic one is women in the middle east, I would call their oppressers evil.]
property [anyone who steals or harms your property, whether its your stuffed animal or your physical body is bad]
ability to pursue happiness [bullies, this ties into liberty a lot of the time too. Arguably women in the middle east suffer from this, or minorities who are blocked because of discrimination]

A list of the worst people in history are the ones who broke these principles to the greatest degree.

I meant those that harm others intenetionally, while bringing no greater benefit

I don't tend to think that people are either 'bad' or 'good', but rather some people have more negative traits than others. I don't see a false dichotomy between 'good' and 'evil' as generally being any different to this thread.

The thing about saying 'detrimental to society' is that as far as the NSDAP were concerned, killing six millions Jews as well as blacks, gays, socialists and other political activists was to advance their idea of society ruled and controlled by the Volksgemeinschaft. Surely intentions and motives should be condemned, but their intentions were good as far as they were concerned.

  • always puts themselves before others
  • hates a group of people for no reason
  • doesn't care about the lives of others or their safety
  • sees no problem with hurting others
  • commits genocide as a leader
  • tries to act superior to others when they are not
  • kidnaps children (Joseph Kony)
  • attempts to take advantage of others
We all commit wrongful acts, but those who constantly do it, do it at a massive degree, or are a major threat to others are the primary "bad" people. Even though, as Y_guy we are all bad people in a sense.
