Amazing. Either it is a pathological lier...or it has been programmed.

In other news:

DROP THAT CHICKEN WING!

Recent studies in Matharian have shown that the vast majority of birds are sentient:

If you start with answers, then your questions will find them.

You want to believe that Cleverbot is lying because then it is an Artifical Intelligence, where as in actuality it is using the algorithm to choose a statement from the 20 million previous conversations.

This is just like infinate energy capacitors, a pointless argument, driven by your ignorance.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Indeed. In truth, I imagine the programming is even more simple than I thought before. Because the conversations seem to driven by randomness a good 80% of the time. It almost seems like the bot is schizophrenic.

I assume it looks for key words in phrases and then compares it to words in what the user has just said... And if none are found, it responds with a random sentence from a previous conversation. It seems really simple to me. Not sure why you don't understand the idea behind a basic input/output system.

It doesn't know what any of this stuff is, it doesn't have an opinion on what any of this stuff is, and it is not doing anything on purpose. It is doing it because it is programmed to look for X in a sentence, search it's data stores, and then return Y if it is found, Z if not found. It is NOTHING more than this.

So what you are saying is....joke books are artifical intelligences.

They ask you questions, and give you answers.

You can ask them questions and there is some possiblity that they will say something related.

And if you write something to them they will remember it forever.

Gad Zukes! Its like we are living in one of those sci fi novels when no one notices the obvious...Books are AIs, Spoons Travel Faster than Light, and up is down.

No. Artifical Intelligence means something man made, which has intelligence.

While Cleverbot is manmade, it does not have even the remotest speck of intelligence, as it is, at present, incapable of discerning meanings of words.

In the same way that a 1,000 monkies, sitting at a 1,000 typewritters, for a 1,000 years, will occassional type something intelligent.

It does not, therefore, mean that the monkies are any more sentient than they were at the start of the experiment.

You can say 'Well my defination means this', great. You have failed your own intellect test:

No, because both would require understanding to interpret:

Transhuman apparation = The unexpected sight of something that is human but apears otherwise somehow (internet troll).

Semi-human apparation = The unexpected sight of something that is similiar to a human, but distinguishable from it (mythological throll).

So, quite simply, going by what is actually meant when people say AI, you are wrong.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

No, because joke books don't choose the responce they find most accurate.

You don't have to read much to find that AIs exist in way more applications than you'd think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI

As for chatbots to be considered successfull AIs they only have to pass the Turing test: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_Test

What you appear to be speaking of are strong AIs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strong_AI

And after reading the wikipedia page, cleverbot still doesn't really fit.

It's a REALLY big shaft.

I didn't catch fire, I used the can of hairspray as a flamethrower and pointed it at my arm.

how are you going to ignore my posts when I'm offering to let you live as my vassal in two weeks time?

However, it is a very difficult challenge and at present all agents fail

Agents are different from normal AIs.

In artificial intelligence, an intelligent agent (IA) is an autonomous entity which observes and acts upon an environment (i.e. it is an agent) and directs its activity towards achieving goals (i.e. it is rational).[1] Intelligent agents may also learn or use knowledge to achieve their goals.

Jabberwacky (the predecessor to Cleverbot) beats it, and has won contests where the pint is beating it most frequently in both 2005 and 2006.

Errr... That description fits Cleverbot pretty well. Autonomous entity which observes (Reads what you type) and acts (Gives a response) upon an environment (The chat window) and directs it's activity into achieving goals (Giving the illusion of intelligence.

Honestly, from what I have seen thus far, I'm fairly certain that were I to judge a turing contest with cleverbot, it would have a 0% success rate.

You see it as intelligent because you wish it were intelligent. It is simply giving you an impression of intelligence which you have bought rather deeply into.

The kind of environment in question is a physical environement and the observation is through senses, as such an example to such an agent would be a thermostat.

Sorry for not making much sense myself, I'm currently suffering from sleep deprivation. Only had 12 hours of sleep so far this week.

No, because joke books don't choose the responce they find most accurate.

I conducted a study.

I asked Cleverbot 'What is your name?', it responded 'My name?'

I asked my joke book, 'What is you name?', it responded 'Joke Book'

Also, one could make the argument that a door is an artifical intelligence, since it chooses to let people through or not, based on an analogue database, comprised on hinges, locks and weight.

And, to my mind, if you are make an argument that a door is intelligent then your basic premise is wrong.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Well, regardless of your choice to say nothing is intelligent because then something else could be called intelligent, Cleverbot is officially an AI and it has recieved awards for being so, you don't see any of that with a door.

Sooo, this has got to be the most pointless debate I've seen in the Tavern yet. lol

Hrmm, I've just checked my runescape account and it would appear that I have been hacked. Welp time to get it back (damned if I'm going to play it but I'm not letting the effort that I put into it go to waste).

Seriously, how the hell do you guys even GET hacked? It can take YEARS to brute-force a randomized 6 character password! Unless the information is out there, or you have something really simple...
