i'd say that failing to make examples of those who use derogatory slurs like that directly contributes to the normalisation of sexism, racism, etc.

There. Right there. You're doing the same thing as everyone else in this thread. You're using quack psychology. You've made a claim, now back it up. Just because you've been taught all your life that saying the 'n' word somehow encourages racism doesn't make it true.

I'm not showing my proof until your group shows yours. You made the claim first.

A note: some of my sources are from scholarly databases with paid subscriptions. I won't be able to show all of them unless you are subscribed to the same service.

An argument can be made that all psychology is quack psychology

The human mind is by nature incapable of formulating a perfectly complete and accurate image of the human mind with which to derive its function- it would inherently need more room to record the data representing the mind than there is room within the mind itself- and barring that, there can be no true 'comprehension' of the our deepest inner working, unless a computer both sufficiently capable of reasoning and possessing more processing power than the human brain is available

Or something

Also, arguing about racism is irrelevant unless someone's being racist, which we don't know for fact (or the details of, if it did happen)

Also arguing about psychology when you're not a psychologist is stupid

Also arguing over the internet is stupid

well here's something, i guess. i didn't really realise i needed a scholarly source to say that words have effects. i didn't make any claims and i'm not particularly interested in trading citations, you just implied you had "actual research" and i was interested in seeing what it might be.

i'll also ask, how do you use the words "[bleep]" or "[racist term]"? i find it hard to believe you manage to use them in a way that says you have no issues with either groups of people.

some more general stuff about slurs.

Completely moronic. As it has been pointed out, if swearing is an issue, swears should be censored instead of banned. I can see censor evasion as a muteable offense. But if I wanna say [bleep], and the game doesn't want me to, just censor it. Like here: I swear, it gets censored. I evade the censor, there be an issue.

And if you don't wanna see swears, isn't that the entire damned point of the filter? Sheesh....

I miss the bedroom gower game.

I still have a mute appeals pending and I hear from several people that they've had theirs for months..., bunch of [bleeps.] HORSE EXCRETEMENT I tell you!

@Hedgehog, it's not much of an issue? i'm glad we can finally say two letters behind a comma. Zybez is probably on the list, don't forget they post there, the community might find out.

If you think gays don't self discriminate you've not been near enough gays.

The gay community is one of the most divided, self-hating, self-defeating groupings ever in my experience and so many ridiculously un-accepting folks within it. You get "normal" types ranting about camp/feminine guys giving gays a bad name and that being gay means liking men so stop being a woman. You get others talking absolutely derogatory filth about how trans or drag queens ruin it for everyone and are freaks. You get camp-sorts deriding 'Straight acting' as ruining it all for everyone as they are 'acting' to try and fit in thus perpetuating the idea that gay is not normal. There's often rampant bi-phobia around the ideas that bi people are greedy, indecisive, cheaters by nature and that it doesn't really exist. Worse than girly trash mags about slagging off body-image and others ideas. And all this and more is covered several times a day in the blogs/forums on mosy gay social networks.

It is ridiculous how intolerant and, in many ways, outright homophobic a great swathe of the gay community can be of their own dam community never mind the usual sprinkling of sexism and racism and all that stuff that any given community is likely to contain some of.

certainly, that's why i asked him how he uses it. context is a big thing. they can certainly be terms of endearment among friends/attempts at reclamation and stuff. it can also be (as sy explained much better than i could) internalised hate. but i'm guessing most of the uses of those words in online video games don't fit into those previous categories.

e - also you were looking for examples of people who've left games due to being insulted, and i guess i'm one of those. it's not having your feelings hurt once and then throwing a hissy fit. it's just a constant stream of shit directed at yr sexuality so that eventually you have to weigh your continued enjoyment of a game vs how much the people you're playing with/against make you not enjoy the game.

Just break the filter into 2 sections: swear words, and other possibly offensive words (for people of different races and sexualities, and other groupings). Those who don't want to see it don't have to. Those who have no problem with it, can see it. I rarely see discrimination in game, so in my experience this isn't even that big of an issue.

Well, considering that the program does something good, yes.

Considering the average runescape player is now 18+ are you sure?

Source needed and, why does it even matter so long as minors are playing the game?

No? Everybody who cares can block the words they don't want to hear, and everyone who doesn't care can leave them visible. You start with a default option which is the current censor, so it doesn't even require any work for many people.

Of course the censor that mutes/bans people should be separate from the censor that stars words. If you give people that ability (to censor what they see), you don't need to have this automute for vulgarity.

^This, that is, I would that Jagex kept separate filters. They already do, or did have a separate filter for usernames that was stronger than the chat one.

The basic chat filter as I've seen it is pretty limited. It seems to be based on string values, i.e. it parses for strings of letters. I found that very frustrating if I happened to use a certain letter combination that Jagex was filtering. It'd be within perfectly clean and legitimate words, but because that letter combination came up, the filter would engage.

So understand, I'm concerned about Jagex's track record on the filter. I really do think that swearing and such should be left to the community to regulate as they desire-- I know some fc/cc's already do.

From my research, all these spambots do is create many accounts, log in with one, auto-send roughly 100 messages at once, log off and never log back in with (continue with the next in pool). Neither muting nor banning is going to solve this problem and that is so obvious.
