With young people spending as much time online playing games as they do on homework

Nice article by the way. I did get quite upset when they didn't mention that some people even make sites about Runescape  , like tip.it

how much did jagex pay them?

What could it be, 10000 ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã? Andrew Gower or some Jagex staff probably could've written it themselves and published it for a small fee :P

And this is how rumours start gentlemen...

Decent article. It ended kind of abruptly though. I thought there'd be a second page or something.

I'd like for them to have mentioned something about the parallels between Runescape's virtual economy and real world economies.

Hm... someone who spends hours on end staring at blue, slighting moving pixels...

Personally, I think that RS in moderation is probably the best... As in not spending hours staring at the screen. But, hey, whatever makes you happy.

The study showed that players use the virtual world not only to recreate the real world, but to explore all sorts of experiences that would otherwise be closed to them.

For example gender, race or class, can be less or more important than they might be in the material world.

We found young men whose online identities are female, young women who control online clans in Runescape and young people who regard their main in-game activity as work.

I found that eeriely accurate...

*shudders* :x

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

I'm like "huh.. what on earth is Merc doing on general?"

My thoughts too. :P

Posts by merc in runescape sections here just look weird to me.

I'd like to know why someone was quoted saying this though:

"You can just sit back by the river and relax. I could watch the water for hours it's so pretty. Not that many people come here so it's a great place just to be, you know."

I think the sights and interactions were overexxagerated compared to the real experience, but it was still a nice read, especially for those who don't have any idea what those types of games are about.

I agree that they should have mentioned something about the economy. How there are semi-advanced concepts like inflation, supply, demand, buying things in bulk, etc., and how things like that give young people real business (and planning) skills. For example, to get a fletching level, I need to buy x bowstrings, x logs, x nats, which would cost x money, so I need to get it by... things like that. That's much more enticing to parents than saying that people spend hours staring at moving blue pixels, and more important as well.

Interesting article, though.

I spend hours on end watching the magestic Hill Giants eat lichen from the slowly growing stalagmites. Sometimes they grunt their community song and make peace with nearby Hobgoblins. I spend this time watching them, though I haven't had the priveledge of seeing an actual Hill Giant.

Lol, I am bored, I needed to write something. Nice article nontheless, though the opposite gender choice of some players is odd in my opinion.

Im guessing the editor left out the 63 pages critiqing the word newb and how often its thrown around in the game and replaced it with "youngsters who are actually very socially accomplished ".

I don't see it as being odd... or at least as being notably odd. We humans have done far stranger things. In this case, there are three reasons I can see for this:

1.) Curiosity. These people just want to find out what the other gender go through.

2.) Seperation of self and character. Certain people may play a character of the other sex because they don't see their avatar as the same as themselves... and for some reason, form an attachment of it. Or perhaps they just like the way the character looks as a different gender more than the other.

3.) Harrassment. This one mainly applies to females. Some females may be harassed in-game, so they play as male characters to avoid harassment.

The stark fact is that many young people spend as much time playing video games as they do doing their homework.

Young people have 1 hour+ homework a day.
