What happened to ICQ?

Featured Replies

Afew years back, it was the program everyone had to have.

This had to have been one of the most revolunionary programs on the internet, being the first onto the instant messaging scene. You use to could not use the internet, without hearing about it.

Nowadays, however, nobody hardly ever uses it. Everybody has left it for MSN, AIM, and Yahoo.

So... the question is, what exactly happened here?

My guess is the AOL buyout was the beginning of the end.

I think they use mIRC or IRC now.. I don't know much about those, but I here people talk about them.

i use ICQ, and i will.... well actually......

Can't say I could ever like ICQ. Nobody I knew liked it.

It was always MSN or IRC.

i can either remember a nickname "Mercifull" login name or a 16 digit unique number. >.

Double negatives make baby jesus cry.

As for why, Mercifull hit the nail on the head; the same reason we're typing in forum.tip.it and not 209.160.32.83.

Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

What Mercifull said.

But asking why ICQ is dead is like asking why nobody uses Windows 3.1 anymore.

Annoying bastards kept adding me over ICQ and their message is always the same...

"Hey, want to look at my picture gallery? *insert website link here* "

I think a dozen people have added me, and gave me that same message so I just deleted ICQ... :?

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

lol i forgot about google -.- ty peoplez

I used to like its free text messaging feature, but then that stopped working.

By the time I got really involved in computers, more user-friendly instant messaging services has already been created. The whole "16 random numbers" thing with ICQ was always my biggest turnoff.

Use trillian.. its the only messenger worth using...

ALOT of features and u can msg MSN, AIM, ICQ, JAB, Google Talk, IRC, YIM... basically everything.

Trillian crashes my computer, for some odd reason. :?

I had 2 contacts on my ICQ list.. and they were almost never online. I also forgot my super longgggg ID number..

It's interesting, a lot of people are complaining about the ID number, but I still remember mine, even though I haven't used ICQ for perhaps 4 years.

My ICQ number is 8 digits, and I remember being awed by a friend of mine whose number was only 7 digits. He was clearly such an elite early adopter! :D

I hated ICQ. I didn't want to have to remember that long number. :(

Weak minded people FTL. =;
If I used it more than once a year, I'm sure I wouldn't have had much trouble remembering a number. :shame:

I basically made a new account every time I had to use it :-?

Oh, and you also get one of the most bloated IM clients known to man! It does everything mediocre and nothing well ;)
