the metric system rocks what is wrong with you people?

THe thing is -- the metric system IS easier and simpler. You multiply/divide by 10 and tada. But you have to remember, Americans were taught the.. other system. I can visualize "one mile", but I can't visualize "one meter" or "one kilogram".

 

 

 

I'd personally love it if America would go metric, but it'd have to be a transition. They'd have to slowly ease everyone into it, or else it'd fail (like the 1975 act).

And thats exactly the thing thats happend here and canada. We are still tought some of the imperial system, so that people who want to get into trades and do stuff wich involves america, we can imperial units.

But you're missing the point. Such an infrastructure change would cost MILLIONS, if not BILLIONS of dollars, for using the same systems. Kittens aren't being killed as a result of us not using the metric system, and as for the conroversy regarding the orbiter and non-conversion, guess whose fault that is? Whoever neglected to convert and/or specify the units.

 

 

 

You know, the metric system could be better, but it'd be so good that it would cost millions of hardworking taxpayers even more money to convert to a system for the sake of being like the rest of the world. When there becomes a legitimate need for conversion or a feasible way to change it, then the US will start listening.

 

 

 

Of course, they could simply emphasize the metric system in schools more so than they do now and pass a law requiring all citizens born after a certain year to make use of the metric system (since they would have adequate education), but that would still likely cost a sizeable sum of money, and many teachers are ill-equipped to teach such a "strange" system.

 

 

 

Case in point - it works, and until there becomes a pressing need or an easy way to convert it won't change.

since we spend a ton on our military, that 1% would be alot of cash. however, that cash could be better applied to fields that help the poor, etc. so i would consider the 1% being spent a waste of money, because it could be spent for different, better purposes.

But as the 1% is spent, that can help the poor people. New people are gonna need jobs making new signs, educating people, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Some people will be hired because of it.

The conversion won't cost as much money as people think, because the government is already working in metric. Only public displays like road signs still have Imperial measurements on them.

 

 

 

The private sector is where most of the conversion will need to be done. That shouldn't be too hard, as most commercial products have both Imperial and metric labels. Just remove the Imperial labels while keeping the metric information and enlarging it. That's not hard at all.

It's pretty much the stupid Americans! Why cant they accept the fact that the way they do EVERYTHING is wrong? They even spell wrong. It's annoying when you have to do some chemistry or something, but its in American units, so you have to convert...the losers.

I'm pretty happy with how things are in England at the moment: distances measured in miles, weights (of people) measured in stone, heights (of people) measured in feet and inches... but some things done in metres (or kilometres) and kilogrammes.

 

 

 

In *work, I'd rather use metric; in every day life I tend to use imperial. (I'm 18, if that's of any interest to people thinking what I use is based on my age).

I just honestly don't see anything backing up some of your opinions that we should change just because some specific fields are primarily done in metric. However, the people in those fields know that they use metric and they *know* metric. In my highschool we *never* use Imperial measurements in the science classes.
