The Steel Dragon Guide (Outdated)

Recommended Posts

This guide is several years outdated, a lot has changed since I made the guide, it was made before summoning and extreme potions existed, and back when it was made they were only available in Brimhaven Dungeon. If you want a guide that fits more to today's standards, this one is not for you. Also it only includes how to kill them with magic.

NOTE: This guide is for killing steel dragons. Not how to kill iron or bronze dragons. Also correct me if something is wrong in the guide.

Killing them isn't very easy, but antifire shield and antifire potion (at least with 4 doses) is a MUST. It's highly recommended to fight them if your combat higher is lower than 85.

Recommended:

Level 85 Combat

Level 72 thieving (for the chest to get 1K so you can go to the cave for free. And get 125 coins in bonus)

Level 51 Magic

2 Law Runes & 2 Water Runes for Ardougne teleport.

Level40 Construction (for Brimhaven house, however teleporting to Ardougne is closer to a bank)

Ring Of Life

It is possible to melee the steel dragons, but requires a lot of prayer potions. However, this is not a guide on meleeing them. This is a guide on how to kill them with magic, which is what I prefer.

Since steel is a metal, thrown weapons don't do much and no matter how far away you are, they always can reach you. So two handed stuff is a very bad idea.

The best way to kill steel dragons is to wear Mystic Rope. Wear amulet of glory, battlestaff or mystic staff of your choice (air battlestaff is highly recommended).

I also recommend you to get 1K blood runes, chaos runes or death runes for each trip. (Chaos Gauntlets are recommended since you can get cheap replacement)

Ring of life is recommended since these dragons can hit high, and if your potion runs out without notice you could die, and the ring will save you.

You shouldn't take your best hatchet with you. It isn't necessary because there is bronze hatchet in the Brimhaven Pub. A hatchet are needed to cut through the vines in the dungeon.

The Fairy Ring Method:

When you've started fairy ring part2 you can use fairy ring. I would use the code DJP and walk to Ardougne bank to take from bank what you need and save some goodies. You could also bank in Zaniris, however you would save some inv if you used DJP, the other code that could get you there is BJR (Holy Grail Required) however, the only way to get out of there is to find a magic wistle (there are some there) and blow it. Do NOT I repeat DO NOT use the code BIS, sure it lets you go to Ardougne City but there is absolutely no way to break the bars.

-When you get there-

Be sure to have your run on 100% when you get to the dungeon, since wild dogs, fire giants, moss giants (unless your combat is 84+) and black demons are also in this cave. Fire giants and black demons can hit heavily so it's recommended to try to avoid them. Luckily the fire giants are often overcrowded.

There are iron dragons as well here, the best way to avoid them is to run, but don't come near any metal dragon since they can hurt you up to 50 damage with melee. Killing iron dragons is ok, but it's waste of runes.

Bring teleport 2 laws and 2 waters when you're done killing steel dragons it is recommended that you steal from the stalls. (though it won't necessarily be needed if you teleport back to Ardougne almost unharmed.) Unless you don't have level 5 thieving yet don't waste your food in the bank.

Maging them is the cheapest way. It's also the fastest way, remember to bring your air battlestaff and your 3K combat and bring some fire runes as well since it does more damage. To melee, you need food, and they drop only a few thrown weapons at a time and it is expensive to get more rune throwing weapons (bronze-adamant are not recommended since steel dragons have a high defense).

WARNING: When you mage them, DO NOT i repeat DO NOT come close to them, stay as far away as possible, they can hit high damage by melee, and your ring of life might not be able to save you.

-What they drop-

Cash: 470coins-3Kcoins

100%: Dragon Bones, Steel Bar(5)

Weapons: Rune Two Handed Sword, Rune Knife(7), Rune Javelin(7), Rune Hatchet, Rune BattleAxe, Rune Mace, Rune Dart(p)(12), Rune CrossbowBolts(3-12)

FAQs:

Q: I've been fighting these for ages, and haven't got a dragon platelegs, how come?

A: Steel Dragons drops them very rarely

Q: Shall I keep the steel bars or leave them?

A: It's up to you, some people don't want smithing exp, just the drops, some are the opposite. It's totally up to you. I

Q: These annoying iron dragons keeps damaging me, what to do?

A: Just run and run until you find a spot and try to hit the steel dragons, it may take some time but with practice it's easy.

Q: Are they always aggressive?

A: Yes, but sometimes you may be lucky enough to not be under attack by them, but that's just luck and is very rare event.

Q: How rare is Dragon HalfShield?

A: Same as other monsters. (Very rare!)

Q: Your guide stinks, there is no way I'm gonna follow it.

A: If you want improvement I will improve it. If you wanna flame the guide I will report you. You've been warned.

Do you think it will be in the sticky ARCHIVE OF WISDOM?

Update: Soul Runes are very rare.

It was a good guide, although it's actually better to do with mystic robes. Full mystic is only 200k, and I killed the drags a lot faster than zam robes.

I think pictures would make the guide better. Gl getting into archive of wisdom. \'

Good point, but I find it expensive however. That's why I recommanded Zamorak Robes.

Let me think, I might edit the guide. I just might. I have to think about this. :-k

Please give me my time to think about this.

Well, I see no point of having pictures. I need suggestions of what kinda pictures you want.

Al right. You're probably right. They aren't very common either. Now if you'll excuse me I will go to bed. I will fix that info tomorrow.

BTW are you meaning with a ROW, because that FAQ info is about W/O the ring.

What you mean "The Steel Dragons In the Tzhaar Place"?

If you're talking about this sentence

Steel dragons are the non-boss strongest monsters (that actually drop something, the one in TzHaar Fighting Caves doesn't count since they drop nothing) in the game.

I think it means that there is another non-boss monster that's stronger than the Steel Dragon in the Fight Caves (which would be the 360s), not that there is a Steel Dragon there. It's a matter of interpretation.

Anyway, the guide is not bad, but truthfully I don't find it good enough to compare to the ones in the Archive of Wisdom. Maybe with a bit more work...

I noticed a few things.

1) Pictures. Everyone loves to see pictures. Also, most people learn best visually, and definitely need some image-related reinforcement. People like to be familiar with what they're going up against before they do so.

2) You wrote very little about the combat interface. What do you use antifires for? When do you eat? Will I still be hit with fire, even if I have the shield and potion? Answer these and more that people may have.

3) Kinda like pictures. But, you need to give alternatives for worn options. I'm sure lower levels would enjoy your recommended materials, but higher levels would most likely bring Ahrim's, or a better amulet. And what about a helmet?

4) Put your subtitles in bold, and add a large bold title. Colors to differentiate between sections is helpful too. It can be a rough transition from How To Get There, and Advanced Techniques. Frankly the draft as it is lacks serious organization.

Well, that's it. Not meant to be mean, just helpful! I'm sure this will be a great guide soon.

Its a nice guide, but i personally would use antifire pots considering they're about 1K per dose, and 1 dose lasts about 6 minutes. I think if you can afford to bring 3K chaos blood and death (or whatever it was) then full mystic and antifire pots arnt a sacrifice.

I'm not drunk! You wouldn't dare call me drunk if i was sober!

Yup, I agree on that it is a good guide, but it still could do with some more information.

SteelDragon.png

1) Antifire potions are there to prevent being hitted by the Dragon fire if you have the shield, we all know that. But now someone may think that "How come I don't need prayer, the dragons should come moving towards you"...

This information should be included: Metal Dragons work differently than the other dragons. It will hit you with melee ONLY when you stand within melee range. If you mage them from a few squares away they will only be attacking with their massive fireballs. Now that you have the shield and the antifire potions, the steel dragon will only hit 0's on you! Since they have a metal scale, is magic your best bet against them. A dose of the antifire potion will last for six minutes, so remember to drink immediately when you see the fire is taken damage on you (it only takes there at 4 hitpoints at a time so you shouldn't worry that much), eat if you feel you need it. Steel Dragons drop curry quite frequently though, so you might be able to get some more to eat.

I personally kill one steel dragon with approx. 60 fire bolts, and my dose lasts for approx. 100 fire bolts, so I am almost able to kill 2 Steel Dragons at one dose. I always bring one dose per 100 chaos, so if I bring 4000 chaos I will bring 40 doses, which means 10 antifire potions (4).

2) Steel Dragons are lvl-246!

3) I actually have one spot where I always stand. You can cover yourself very well from the Iron Dragons this way: When you enter the room with the Iron & Steel Dragons, FIRST DRINK A DOSE OF YOUR POTION!!!, run to west and south from there so that the western wall is on the right side of you. You're most likely to be hit by Iron Dragons, run through them, they should not do that much damage to you. You should soon see a lonely Steel Dragon there. Let the Steel Dragon attack you WITH FIRE, (if you're under attack by an Iron Dragon run south/north until the Iron Dragon is out of sight). When the Steel Dragon is attacking you, go to a spot found just in the western wall. I've made a small picture, I know it's a little indistinct but:

SteelCave.pngSteelCave2.png

When you see the spot, go in there and start maging the Steel Dragon. As you see, this is a spot where NO other dragon will distract you! When you have killed the Steel Dragon, there is no much walking, go there and pick up your drops, go back to the spot and wait for the Steel Dragon to spawn again (alternatively you can also mage the Steel Dragon to the east).

Please beware that this is for most people the most popular Steel Dragon. I've killed approx. 2000 Metal Dragons, and I'd say that over 1000 of these were this dragon I'm talking about. Also, 8 of the 9 Dragon legs/skirt drops I've gotten come from this dragon.

If you find another player in there fighting your dragon, there is a safe way to log out in this dangerous room. If you go into your spot you will find a large egg. On the right side of the egg there is one square. Go there and log out.

The Dragons WON'T see you if you hide there! (Unless you've run there during being attacked)

4) A Fire battlestaff is a much better way than Air Battlestaff. If you attack with Fire bolt while wearing Chaos Gauntlets (the way you should do) it only takes 3 air runes while it takes 4 fire runes. Chaos Gauntlets are a reward of the Family Crest Quest. With them, your max hit with Fire Bolt will be 15, while it normally is 12. Remember that they ONLY work on Bolt-spells (not strikes, blasts or waves).

--

Yes I also use Mystic Robes. They cost 200k which most people SHOULD afford, they give a decent magic bonus and therefore helps a lot. I've only died once there; It was when I looked at the forums leaving my character there alone. A Steel Dragon hit me with melee (CAUTION: Steel Dragons can hit 22+ with melee!!! - NOT 50 though!) and I died. That was my own fault. If you pay attention you'll find no worries in there!

Wait, what is the use of 72 thieving?

Also, you can last more than 3k runes with anit-fires.

The guide wasn't very in-deph, and to be honest, there's been a lot of better guides written.

They hit 50? Maybe I should stop meleeing them without prayer... :-k  :-k

No, with melee their max hit is something between 20 and 25. They do not hit as much as 50 with melee, without shield, their fireballs could hit that much though...

NOTE: This guide is for killing steel dragons. Not how to kill iron or bronze dragons. Also correct me if something is wrong in the guide. But please don't flame

The onyl difference is that bronze (and to a lesser extend iron) dragons are meleeable.

Killing them isn't very easy, but antifire shield and antifire potion (at least with 4 doses) is a MUST. You aren't ready to fight them if your combat level is lower than 85.

At 74 combat with 60 magic I highly doubt they will be more diffivult than at 85 combat. I used 2k chaos there and never had any troubles.

Recommended:

Level 72 thieving

A lot of food (swordfish or better, the food should heal all at a time, pizzas and cakes aren't recommanded since they don't heal you so much)

Level 51 Magic

2 Law Runes & 2 Water Runes for Ardougne teleport.

Why the thieving?

The best way to kill steel dragons is to wear Zamorak robes (other robes aren't recommended, since they are expensive and steel dragons can kill everyone. Even level 100+.). Wear amulet of magic, battlestaff or mystic staff of your choice (air battlestaff is highly recommended).

I also recommend you to get 3K blood runes, chaos runes or death runes for each trip. (Chaos Gauntlets are recommended since you can get cheap replacement)

If you have a ring of charos (u), wear it to get a free trip that would save some money.

Chaos gaunts with fire bolt and full mystic/Ahrims is a must, the magic bonus is really necessary. And wear a ring of wealth, 800gp to enter the dungeon isn't that much. An increased chance for rare drops is worth more than those 800gp.

Be sure to have your run on 100% when you get to the dungeon, since wild dogs, fire giants, moss giants (unless your combat is 85+ which is needed)

Again, why 85 combat? Just put protect from melee on and you'll have no trouble at all.

There are iron dragons as well here, the best way to avoid them is to run, but don't come near any metal dragon since they can hurt you up to 50 damage with melee. Killing iron dragons is ok, but it's waste of runes.

Irons are a lot easier to kill, and their drop rates aren't that much different than those from a steel. But that's mostly a personal decision I guess.

Bring teleport 2 laws and 2 waters if you have a lot of food in bank since you just have to repeat the thieving step and the hatchet step and you will be back in no time. (you should steal some cakes to heal yourself, it's also recommanded to have a curry they drop for another trip)

You can stay there till you run out of antifires, I barely use food there.

I had 180 addy javelins there :P , but don't use them. Magic ftw.

FAQs:

Q: I've been fighting these for ages, and haven't got a dragon platelegs, how come?

A: With a ring of wealth the drop rate is supposed to be 1/50, but you can stay there for ages just because steels take ages to kill.

All in all, teh guide isn't too bad but a couple of pictures and some mor explanation would be nice (liek why do you need the thieving and such).

Nothing spectacular most of it is just common sense and im sure someone who can afford to waste 3k bloods can afford to lose a 200k set of robes.

+1.. Flat out not a very good guide #-o
