So, I was just wondering if anyone else on this forum is does some blacksmithing in real life.

I do, about the best I've made is a steel short sword, so I figure I'm level 34 smithing in real life. :D Anyone else do some metal work in real life?

I think runesmithie does. He mentioned something about starting one in his backyard I think.

But that was months ago so I dont know if he still does. :-k

Never got around to doing it :P

And it wouldn't have been running hot enough to make steel stuff anyways

Yeah, smithing steel is very difficult. I don't know, but it seems pretty unrealistic that some one can smit steel. Iron, ok, if you know a person who's been doing it for ages. But steel requires a lot of patience and even more heat

I've never done it myself, but where I live there's often events with medieval events, and of course there's a true blacksmith. But I've never seen steel stuff being made.

Closest thing I got to smithing was seeing a anvil in my uncle's barn. Odd thing is he doesn't smith. :-s

First of all, I do not smelt steel or anything else, I buy steel rod/stock or use scrap.

As far as my equipment goes, I have a small forge, which burns coal, not charcoal mind you, but coal. If I pump enough air into it, it gets up to the temperature of molten glass--more than enough to heat up steel. My grandpa bought it for me :D for only $40.

As for an anvil to work on, I now have a small 75 lb anvil which is seated on a stump. But I used to use a piece of rail road track, which worked just fine!!

I know a guy who's my age. He makes swords for us. :P He's rather good at it. Alot of people do metalworking around here because the main industry in my little corner of the world is steel production. I know some guys a little older than me who have already found their life's work in metalworking. They get paid about $12 an hour, which isn't bad.

I would probably be -900 level smithing though.

Metals don't need to be heated in order to work them. We had anvils at my highschool for metal work and we sure as hell didn't have another to smelt things down :P

Yeah, and then we'll be able to track you, kidnap you and get you to make swords for me. Freely.

When I went to Egypt there was a man selling steel daggers, and I asked if I could make my own. It was pretty sweet. But when I wanted to take it back home by plane, they wouldnt let me take it

But I got it sent to me 3 weeks after I got home. Apparently the guy I bought it from got it some how and sent it to me :?

That's what I love about those countries; people still care for customers sometimes and don't just see them as walking dollar bags.

It's the same in Turkey and Morocco, where you can have a ton of fun with the locals by haggling and chatting away the time.
