Toxicologist
I suppose most people know about Fairy Rings of Runescape and how you can "dial" to locations. Personally, I think JAGeX might have gotten this idea off Stargate... you know, the inter-stellar gateways made by the Alterans, which you can dial and connect to another stargate? what do you people think? Just saying an interesting observation here. Why do you resist? tefda
There's also the pharoh's sceptre. It looks similar to the Rings that the main enemy (The egyptian people, can't think of the name) used to teleport and whatnot.
Rebdragon
You guys are overthinking this, making things appear in ways that they aren't  . chris1216
Considering Jagex is british, and they prefer to make references to extremely well known things from England (Hitchikers, Monty Python), it's safe to assume that NO, they didn't get the idea from stargate. Seriously, people need to stop reaching for all these connections that barely hang by a thread. (ZOMG! that new garfield movie title was stolen from Jagex!) Dragondan_Ro
say why have they made viking looking cahracters in relleka and why is askeladden there i can't remember that he had something to do with vikings(i live in norway) still i dont care if they take ideas from real worlds or other games as long it make the game better Give a man a lighter, and he will be warm for a while.Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life. Blizaga57
And all rpg's copied the system of leveling by gaining experience created by dungeons and dragons or whatever role playing game that used books was made first. My point: every idea has already been used in an rpg and all ideas copy others in some way shape or form.

Cdub
They may have gotten the idea from StarGate, who knows? I think most people look at RS, then look at similar ideas and immediately jump to the conclusion "Jagex snagged another trick". I don't think it's like that. While they may borrow some ideas, the whole Fairy-Ring-Dialing system just seems like an original idea from them. Like I said, it could really go either way. Did you know?: Fairy rings are an actual phenomena in real-life. Fungi are actually extremely complex lifeforms. What humans see of these fungi is, in reality, a miniscule portion of the actual organism (entitled the fruiting body). Beneath every fruiting body is a large network of small "roots" called hyphae, the term used to describe the network itself is mycelium. I'm not going to explain the mating-cycle of fungus, but I'm sure you could find out easily enough. Anyway, in certain fungi (such as those that Fairy Rings are composed of), the mycelium spreads out in a circular pattern surrounding the fruiting body. At a unanimus point for all of the hyphae they go through their mating cycle and emerge with fruiting bodies of their own. Thus, they are equidistant from the original fruiting body, creating a circle of fungus / mushrooms. They were deemed "fairy rings" as the growth cycle is relatively quick, and they would pop up over night and catch the amazed inhabitants of the area off-guard. :)
Blaze The Movie Fan
Well, I think there could grow a giant mushroom where you put the code on and it goes back to ground when you're finished and teleports you. This is an interesting post. But I agree with Cdub too. Weird I haven't heard of StarGate. :-k But who cares, it might be a coinicidence. Very often refrences are coinicidence. Can someone tell me what StarGate is?

Can someone tell me what StarGate is? its a tv show, had like 10 seasons on the scifi channel, and no its not a coinidence, they basicly copy like half there material from books, tv shows etc and 3rd there is no way a multi-millian dollar studio that has been in bussenis and created this before rs was even started would have gotten there idea from rs, espcailly since the show was created before rs even started. and they ended the show after the fairy tale quest was realsed also in the second part of slug mense they copied the main characters name "jack o'niel" and copyed his attuide and life if you watch the show alot you notice it and lastly they aren't talking about the circle phanoumon of the fariy ring, its the ability to dail a certain number code and take you to a certain place also they both deal with 3 sections

Peronix
It makes no reference to Stargate IMO. Let me explain. The stargate is a circular object that you walk through like a gate (PoH portals and focuses are more similar to Stargates). The dialing sequencer looks nothing like the DHD. And it isn't similar to the 'rings' in SG1, either, because that uses a matter stream that can only transport you vertically up or down.

They were deemed "fairy rings" as the growth cycle is relatively quick, and they would pop up over night and catch the amazed inhabitants of the area off-guard. :) Yes, I am aware of the fact that fairy rings are real, and that they were deemed to have many mystical properties by people in the past. And also, if JAGeX used an idea or a reference to another fictional work, that does not mean they have to copy everything piece by piece. Just because a fairy ring does not correspond with a stargate exactly does not mean the idea was not taken from there, or that they are not referring to that. The main ideas: ring, "teleportation", and dialling are there, which I think is a good enough connection than any. Some people seem to think I am implying JAGeX "stole" an idea. I am doing nothing of that sort! I am merely pointing out that they may have simply aknowledged another fictional work. They have done so quite a bit in Runescape... Camelot, references to the Lovecraft Universe... Why do you resist?
