Violent video game adverts. (Plus, it's Rememberance Day)

Ok, let's get to the point. I saw an advert on TV a few hours ago for an Xbox game called Duty Call 3 or something. It consists of guns going off, men screaming, buildings blowing up, fire, bullets, bombs, soldiers falling down, dead, crying, yelling, fighting.

I was absolutely disgusted. It's Rememberance Day, a day when we're supposed to respect the lives of the men who fought for our countries. And now, death and destruction is being turned into entertainment?! This made me really, really angry. My grandparents were just a few of the millions who suffered during the war. My grandma particularly was really upset by the advert - her husband was killed in action, plus two of her brothers. Still, people are using this special day to make money? To entertain people?

I'm not saying it's going to cause World War III or anything, or that violent games such as Duty Call 3 will encourage violence, but for this advert to be so gruesome and disrespectful, and, even worse, shown on Rememberance Day?

Your thoughts please. I am not happy.

I do believe this is "one of those days" where something like that shouldn't be shown. I can sympathize with you and your family; I'd be equally enraged. Does anyone want to see a commercial for terrorist documentary on 9/11? I suppose it's either: the video game company producing that has no sympathy or it doesn't get to choose when its commercial is shown. For whatever reason, and whoever is to blame, it doesn't make it right.

I agree with you. What we must ask ourselves is, what did our fellow country-man fight for? To have a multi-cultural society where the native englishmen are becoming a minority? An ever turning police state? Run by liberals and other do gooders? That makes me livid.

And no lol why do you always want to get stuff from John Lewis. Its over ̣̉300 more then than what i paid.

John Lewis is a great, great shop.

Its just a game. Get over it.

Its like saying RuneScape needs to be banned on earth day so people don't cut down trees.

Its not saying that at all. Its saying that They could lay off the advertising of war games, on remembrence day, in respect of the veterans.

World War II ruined so many people's lives. I don't care whether it's a game or not. To be honest with you I don't even care it's Rememberance Day today. I just think games like this are disgusting.

Plus, it's actually officially based on WWII. It's a game where players cause suffering, even in virtual reality. It upset me, it upset my grandma. She has every right to be angry.

Also - trees don't have feelings.

Though to be honest, I don't really care about Rememberance Day so much, just that these kind of games should be shown at all.

Maybe they'll stop it today, but tomorrow they'll start it again...

The ironic thing is, most kids today learn that particular sort of history through videogames... -.-

I just came back form a Veterans Day memorial. And I do agree with having respect towards veterans, especially on this day. But Its just game, its not making fun of veterans, or disgracing them. Infact the game is in dedication to the Heros of WWII. You could have easily changed the chanel. Another thought, the buisness world usually doesnt stop for anything. They probably payed for two months of advertising on the networks, and are played several times a day. I dont tihnk they were trying to sell on veterans day or anything like that.

Issy both of your posts clash with each other. Just go stand in line with all of the other people that want video games with violence banned. It won't happen so have a seat.

I feel very, very strongly about this. You're clearly not worried, fine, but from that last phrase you're also one of those people who refuse to stand up for what they believe in.

Right, can we get back on topic now... no flaming... but we all know what the Off-Topic boards are like...

Violence has "entertained" people for thousands of years. It's nothing new.

I also find it funny that, out of all of the violent forms of media today, you chose video games.

or that violent games such as Duty Call 3 will encourage violence

This is where I lost you. It doesn't encourage violence. It's a game for entertainment. It's the same thing as watching a war movie.

However, I don't see you bickering about war movies now, am I?

Well, not much more to be said, so.... I'll be off now.

Oh, by the way, Call Of Duty 3, not Duty Call 3. Just to let you know.

To be fair, Issy actually said she didn't think that it would necessarily encourage violence.

Yeah i think on a day like today we should remember and honour the fallen men, not glorify them like this. Do I have a problem with the game in general? Of course not, it's for entertainment purposes only, and from what I know of games like Call Of Duty, they're actually suitably moving in their violence. Films like Saving Private Ryan wouldn't have had half the effect they had without using the violence that they did. It's what the war's were like, so why make it seem like anything else? At least it's reasonably accurate.

I have to say, today is one day they should lay off advertisements like that. However I don't think they should stop them altogether. Like Nad said, violence is entertainment, whether it be real or a video game. I've been watching horrible movies all day and you can't imagine how many limbs I've seen cut off, and I enjoyed watching those movies. I enjoy playing FPS games once in a while and I'll admit, I find it funny when others get hurt. Basically, I think today they should lay off the ads but it's also part of our lives..

TV channels have contracts with companies. They have to show adds for certain things so many times a day. So just because of one day, they cant really do anything about it.

Its virtual reality, we are all smart enough to know the difference. Mourn for the lives lost in the real wars today, not the ones lost in video games.

what was she saying then when I quoted her? :? .

It would be nice to have a day set aside from that, but as it's part of a contract thats simply not possible.

And now, death and destruction is being turned into entertainment?!

O please, be a little less naief, please! It's like this for over 3000 (!) years now! Pain, violence and the suffering of others have always been entertaiment, it's like this since the start of humankind!

In ancient Rome gladiators and Chirsts were killed in such horrible and inhuman ways!

At the dark ages random women were burnt. And hunders of people we're watching those events! They went there at their own will, people traveled miles just to see a woman burn! Don't say that wasn't entertainment.

And now, now we're complaining about a "violent" computer game. While slavery still exists, people die cuz of no food/water/diseases/etc. And you complain about a little game?! Come on, go help those people instead of complaingin about a little game, which hardly hurts anyone.

When everything's been said and done, more has been said than done.

This particular game mimics violence. In it, you kill people. It's officially based on a WWII campaign. Not particularly respectful.

And as for those people who die every second - too bad. It's life. We can do without promoting destruction via children's entertainment.

Umm, dude?

Welcome to every year since you've been alive, most likely longer.

It seems you're not angry about violent games, but angry that one was advertised on Rememberance Day, which is obviously a coincidence and they're not going to stop running an ad just because it's X day.

Time to grow a pair. That's how the world works. It doesn't stop running just because something coincidentally [wagon]-hatish happens.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.
