Shark bites off boy's leg

Featured Replies

A 15-year-old boy's life was saved when his brother and nearby bystanders took quick action after a shark bit off his right leg at a Western Australian beach.

Zak Golebiowski, of Mt Gambier, was surfing with his 18-year-old brother 40 metres off Wharton Beach, 70km east of Esperance, at

7.40am (WST) when a five metre white pointer attacked him.

Zak's right leg was bitten off by the huge shark, which also mauled and punctured his other leg, leaving it severely lacerated.

But the quick-thinking actions of a New Zealand couple, his brother and a surfing mate saved his life, Esperance Police Constable Katrina Luke said.

"If it wasn't for the efforts of his brother, friend and the New Zealand couple, he wouldn't be alive,'' Constable Luke said.

"He is now in a serious but stable condition.''

They are now hunting down the shark and are going to kill it. Do you think it deserves to die?

It's the boys fault for swimming in their territory, killing it is just stupid.

Just like the cabbage after Steve Irwin's death. There's no reason to kill that shark. He didn't know it. -.-

I feel sorry for the boy, but he took the risk so he could know it.

At least, I think that.

Inter-species attempted murder?

Atleast give the shark a fair trail before killing it. :wall:

When will people understand, that humans are one of the only animals that go to war with eachother and have a veiw of animaly cruelty.

A shark on the otherhand, has no problem with eating a different species, in fact, it is expected.

I vote nay for killing the shark.

I do hope the kid lives on a normal life with atleast a good prosthetic leg of some sort.

Nah the shark should be killed and battered and eaten with mayonaise and tomato sauce....*Drools over keyboard*

I had a phobia of all water animals. Sharks, octopi, squid, whales, dolphins.

Enjoy that random info!

I don't think the shark should be killed. He was following instinct.. Feel threatened? Bite the threat's leg off! Could use some salt...

It really has

The shark shouldn't be killed. It's not like it's totally unusual behaviour for them, we enter their territory under their conditions and we have to respect their dominance. Killing it serves no purpose except further driving them towards extinction purely for revenge.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

[cabbage] humans are the only species to go to war within itself.

Territorial animals attempt to kill each other all the time.

As for the shark, I dunno. Sucks the kid got his leg half bitten off and stuff - but considering there's been 5 attacks in the last 5 years (2 of which fatal) I would've expect them to have been more cautious.

By all means kill the shark, really shouldn't have been that close to the shore to begin with.

Rarely do animals have "Wars" over territories, and rarely are animals killed in these, wounded and death from bleeding maybe. Animals might attack anouther of the same species if it wanders alone into a territory of some other pack, but that wouldn't be war. Same with fighting over mates, rarely is there death.

And also I said one of the only, because there are some ants that will wage wars between neighboring ant hills and such (I'd love to watch one of those) (and also more species, only around 8 or 10)

And also, what determines where sharks can swim or not? =; it is a sharks fault if he passes a hunting boat and get harpooned, but not if he happens to be hungry and a dangling leg is what he has in sight, as both of these have the same reason for happening, hunger.

And also, sharks have been in the oceans long before humans have even been on land, if a shark gets near a busy beach, surely, kill it before it harms anyone. But if the shark has done its damage, revenge is stupid.

1z2zrwo.jpg

It's as much a danger to human life as every other provoked shark. The only way to stop them being a threat to surfers is to kill every last one of them.

Now, do we exterminate mosquitoes because people die from malaria? Do we hunt down and kill every single wild animal that could possibly maul a human being?

No, we don't. We accept that they're potentially harmful and we teach people not to piss them off.

Let's hope that people learn something from this incident, like they should have every other damn time someone was attacked by a shark in WA.

@xvillexvalox: disregard the meaning of war, and put it simply: Animals kill animals of the same species. We (as Humans) do it on a much larger scale simply because there are more of us, although the ratio would be somewhat similar.

And nothing stops them swiming wherever they feel like. But in that region, that close to shore - there's bugger all of their normal food source. Unusual at least that it was that close.

I don't really care if the shark get's killed or not.

I doubt it would possible to extinct mosquitos :(

I'm afraid of water bodies. I always expect a shark attack, even if i'm swimming in a pond. Recently i had a dream where i was in a ocean. The second i thought there could be sharks i got scared and woke up.

Recently there was a problem with a brown bear in Austria (where i live). Bears where extinct here and reinhabitated a couple years ago. One of them went on a rampage and killed farm animals and frightend hikers. Coming from Italy he passed the alps and finally ended in Germany. He showed no fear of man at all. For some weeks there was a huge discussion what to do about him. Finally they shot him in Bayern, followed by a huge uproar. There where even people threatening to kill the hunters that shot the bear. Now Bruno (his name) is some kind of a legend here. The martyr of brown bears :P

Ironically im watching a documentary right now about shark bites.

So? You're just a human, so I'll come along with a tank or some other lethal instrument and shook your head off. Yeah, no-one will care when you're gone...

Not.

What is it with you? You're so prejudiced, yet it feels pain and probably emotion. It's not the shark's fault, have some pity. Kill the surfers instead.

Kill the surfers instead.
That's right - kill someone for being active and doing something healthy - what's next, kill pedistrians to stop hit&runs? Right :uhh:

You are going to pathetic lengths to convince us that the shark doesn't deserve to die. I don't care if the shark bit the boys leg off or not; I also don't care if the shark dies or not. It's just a freakin shark, get over it

I do too, except of Dolphins in that list.

If I am snorkling or below water, I'm not afraid. If I'm above water and can't see what's at my feet, gosh darnett I'm afraid!

It sucks that he got his leg bitten off. I'm probably most afraid of sharks :ohnoes: , even though, most times they are pretty harmless and won't do anything to hurt you. It's the stories we have heard, such as this one, that scare me.

Should he be killed?

A shark has the IQ of a (Insert something stupid here)

Human's on the other hand, have an IQ of one of those 20 Questions Toy Games, those things are pretty smart \'

Back on topic, the shark shouldn't be killed, as I pointed out, sharks have a low IQ and really actually can't think for themselves like humans can do. They have no logical reasoning or anything (Just pointing out something we have and use a lot that they don't have).

Well, maybe, as you appear to have absolutely no sense of compassion or sportsmanship, yeah.

I think it shouldn't be killed, its just a animal, it doesn't know, for the shark it was just food. And the boy risked it...

erm- I don't think Sportsmanship would be an apropriate word choice there....

You must be a faarrrrrr left wing liberal, animal rights activist. You're trying to make me out to be a bad guy here. I'm just merely stating, I honestly don't care if the Shark gets speared or if it lives another (insert random number here) years. Sure it sucks for the shark, but I mean c'mon. If a fly is buzzing around you, you swat it don't you?

No. Why would I kill an innocent creature who has done me no deliberate harm?

Alright dude... you're to far out there for me. Next time you're at a campfire, you might wanna put the fire out so you don't burn those poor mosquitoes
