in my school we call people all these things, but i don't. i think it's wrong to just catagorize people on their appearance. because some who wears sporty clothes is called a chav, and most chavs are NOT nice, when i know lotsa people who wear sporty clothing and a really nice.

i think we have all done at least once or twice in our lives. i know i have, and the group of people i judged as geeks/nerds are now my closet and best friends so, i regret judging them.

yea, i judge. I have to. Doesn't mean the first judgment won't change, though. If i get to know the person, of course its going to change, but if I do not, then theres nothing i can do about it

For some people, being judged as being part of a certain group gives them acceptance that they can't find elsewhere.

I think everyone judges people until they get to know that person. I used to hate being judged but I figured I might as well get used to it seeing as how I judge others. It would be quite hypocritical if I judged others and didn't want to be judged myself, wouldn't it?

Categorizing and judging people is wrong, but if one person is clearly that stereotype, then it's ok to an extent.

Some people like the names. Like I know a group of "People who wear sporty clothes and tuck their trousers into their socks" and they don't mind calling themselves this label "Chav".

edit: what especially annoys me is when i was at school, when there was a teacher i didnt personally know, they would just assume, for some reason, that i was a bad person and i was up to no good. If you automatically assume something of a person based on his clothing, you're just close minded. It's not "ok", it's dumb. "I wont be his friend because he/she wears this or that, tight/loose pants, all black, all white, whatever". That just shows how immature you are, that you pick your friends not by who they are but how you think they're percieved by others.

I judge them. But not from the outside. Okay, fine. Partially from the outside. But I also take into consideration how they act, their personality, who they hang out with, etc. I've given pretty much everyone in my grade a category. Just don't give the groups to the categories, give the categories to the groups. And I personally do not care if someone calls me a nerd or geek, because I am one. (By the way, I keep all the categories to myself. No one else knows my thoughts about them/their category.)

Once you are out of school you don't deal with that too much more. Maybe at college you might, at my college there wasn't a problem though. In fact, one night after class we decided to go out and get some pizza. In the class there was one of the really popular kids, one who wears all the American Eagle clothing and stuff (he fit the stereotype). Then there was another kid who might have had one friend, but no one ever knew because no one ever talked to him. Somebody you would probably not admit to going out to pizza with. But when we went out, both the popular kid and the not-so popular kid went along with all of us "middle-class" people. We even had a talk about how this would never have happened in high school. Everybody was OK with it now though.

Generalizations/stereotypes tend to usually be true just because that's how they became generalizations. But since they're obviously not always true, you can't go by them. Categorization like that just further encourages people to fall into stereotypes.

It happens at school because people are immature and usually a label is a derogatory one used to make them feel lower and highten there own self esteme. A form of bullying in other words. Once you have left school you rarely get this as people dont act this way in the real world.

Your school is wrong, a chav is someone similar to a "wigger", but I really dont have any place on this topic because I believe in racial profiling lol

I disagree with all forms of stereotypes/labels. If someone wants to wear certain clothes, let them. No need to assume that they also uphold a certain attitude or behavior.. No need to put them in a catagory of people. Just let them be themself.
