The Birth of Tip.It

Amazing how much attention people paid to all of this.

I don't think anyone paid that much attention, the things just get noticed when they happen.

I remember I joined pretty early on on the first board incarnation, I was buying an adamantite square shield from Fook. And Ezarc (or however it was spalled) had a signature which was the size of the RS screen, yet he was allowed to use it.

Aww :D

Wonder when fook will turn up again. He tends to do so periodically. :D

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

Good to see some interest in Tip.it's history here :D

So much gets muddled in the retelling, especially during the transitional periods between the different boards.

In spite of some of my pains here, and perhaps because of a few, I'm proud to claim some part in some of the shape of what happened over a few years :P

For anyone that cares, the current incarnation of the forums are what I really had the most to do with, after modding/adminning during the scapeboard days, I got a lot more technical with things and helped Silverion and Lightning set up the boards on Tip.it's own server. For those who have run phpbb boards, you'll know that installing it alone isn't exactly difficult. What was difficult was setting them up in a way that allowed them to stay online while the userbase stress-tested them on a day-to-day basis lol (plus adding bells-and-whistles to make the work of moderating all of that activity possible for such a comparatively small staff).

It looks like the boards have had some significant work done to them since I left, and they've probably learned a lot from mistakes I was responsible for :P

Hello to all of the oldbies who remember me as a crazy, and please stop sending me hatemail to those who remember me as an admin (just kidding ;) )

Yah, just delete the 'Contrib' file after installing. On my web site (which is dead), I used Fantastico (gives you a list of what you can install to your site) and chose the PHPBB forums.

PHPBB is pretty much the most straight-forward bulliten-board (to give it it's proper name) out there. I mean, you upload the files, create an SQL database, and fill out the info that they ask your for... A mouse could do it

Actually, if you want to use it's "proper" name, this bulletin board runs on phpBB2, not phpbb or PHPBB, and as I said, installation of the basic boards was easy. Running them in an environment that's likely hundreds of times more demanding than any site that you, or Serephurus, would run... requires a lot more finesse.

Kudos to Albosky and anyone else doing behind the scenes work these days, page-generation times have improved (all except the blasted ads at the top :P ), and I keep wondering what you chopped out to improve performance.

I don't know how many of the 'tweaks for large forums' you did Rae, but I'm fairly certain that Albosky done almost all of them.

Hm, I realize that my last post may have come off somewhat negative...

That was not my intention, I did not mean to insinuate that anything useful or necessary was removed, but the tweaks/combination of tweaks that was used is what I remain curious about. I spent a lot of time doing my best to improve performance while adding features; based on what I can see, Albosky probably reached a better balance point.

I was around for scapeboard or wtever but I was under a totally different name and at that point I actually used this place for runescape help (tips).. I've not played runescape in many years.

Are you sure you were under a totally different name? I thought I recognized your name from a while ago.
