I think the "do you conform?" question should be rephrased to "do you conform for the sake of conforming?".

Yeah that sounds a lot better worded.

In that case, not "generaly". Sometimes I'll join my friends in on something I haven't tried yet but I won't join in on something that isn't good for me (well, something I don't want to do).

No. The concept sickens me. :-X

You take the definition of conforming too serious. Nadril just proved it has a very lax definition.

I'd say I conform a little bit. I.E few of my friends were moving to WoW (me and one other friend were getting bored of our current MMO) so I joined them.

Conforming = Making yourself unhappy

Not conforming and doing what you want = Making yourself happy

/thinks rushrock should learn a bit more about Conforming.

This is going to sound really stupid, but...huh? Could you please explain? :-k

Aside from viktors blatent obviousness ( :P ) you pretty much have to conform to some things. Hell, your "conforming" technicly because you wear cloths. Wearing clothing is the normal thing to do!

But other than the stupid example I can almost bet you that you conform to something here or there. For example, I can almost bet you (again) that you dress a lot like your friends, am I right? And don't tell me that it just happened out of coincidence ;p.

Also, don't tell me "but I like to dress like that". Well, those people wearing expensive clothing like to dress like whatever they dress like too. Your still generaly sticking to something though if you like it or not.

Eh, sorry if I rambled on a bit.. hopefully you get the idea :/. You can't just blatently say that conformity is bad because, quite frankly, some people need to conform.

Well, of course. I'm not talking about every little detail. Sure, everybody conforms in their daily lives to an extent. I'm just saying that you can't overdo it. (You all know what I mean.)

Friends should like you for who you are.

more work to be a nonconformist than it is to be a conformist.
Do you really think that? How hard is it to be yourself?

I've got an example (and things like this happen to me often)..

When I was in the fourth grade I got my ear pierced. It wasn't considered "cool" to have it done back then. Then I got into middle school and more and more guys started getting their ears pierced for the sake of cooling "cool." Then I look like a conformist for having my ear pierced and so I removed it. Thus wasted money on the piercing and earrings.

However the money for the piercing wasn't wasted. I recently shoved another earring through the skin covering the hole in my ear. Yes it hurt but I think it was worth it..

I suppose the definition does have many grey areas. But i think the way it was explained in the original post was clear. Like doing something against your will or assimilating just for the sake of being the same.

And I argued that it can't possibly be easier to do something against your will than not to. The example you just gave, deloriagod, shows something (i'm assuming) you did against your will (i.e. removing the earring), but in this case, its for the sake of being different.

Why didn't you just keep it? So what if you were like them, it's what you wanted. (correct me if i'm wrong)

This reminds me about the time when my friend and I lstarted saying the word "owned" all the time. We kept on saying it, and another "popular" kid in my school started saying it all the time. We were called "posers", but hell, that didn't stop us. We still say it to this day. 8-)

What are popular kids but normal kids. Why do people want to be so much like them? Is short term acceptance really worth it in the long run? It is human nature to want to be loved and accepted, but what makes a few persons ways better than everyone else's?

Conforming CAN make you happy.

Maybe if you're one of the few people who finds cons pleasing.

On the flip side, you all know I'm not being serious right?

I'd hope so. ;P Positive peer pressure'D!

People are get so obsessed trying to look like the modern day teenager that they've completely forgotten what true friends are. It makes me sad...:(

Nope. A little. Everybody conforms just a bit. I mean, I worry about what people will think about me, if that counts. But everyday, Khaki's or Cargos. No jeans. I don't wear band shirts. I enjoy music, but don't wear band shirts. I don't take up guitar because most 13 year olds do. I wear collered shirts as well to school, but mostly nice clean shirts. Nothing to crazy. Maybe a nice fleece loose turtleneck, blue on top, grey at the bottom of the sweater.

Don't do drugs. I never will either. Although, a good social drink every once in a while when I get older would be nice :)

Everyone conforms in one way or another. Probably not in the most obvious of ways but you still will do in some form.

For example, I don't think many people would appreciate if I did not shave my armpits now, perhaps if I lived in Germany I would not think anything of it, but in my society? You shave them as this is what is deemed aesthetically pleasing. Lol, it's just an example, but you catch my drift hopefully...

Somewhat.

Care to elaborate?

Sure, was feeling lazy.

I conform to style, not brand style, but look style. Thought process and/or interests I don't. I have my own interests and I don't care if people don't like me because of them. Physically=for the most part, mentally=barely.

This is nearly the same for me. People can change their outside, but what really matters in the inside, and you should not change your insides for other people.

This "conforming" kind of goes along with peer pressure. You just have to stand up for what you think is right.

Not at all, my friends are like OBSESSED with airsoft guns, and they go out in the wetlands next to my house and start shooting at each other, then they like try to get me to come and all, I wander out a bit with the puppy (just as an excuse not to play, for want of a better word, with them)and then, they get so intense and into it, I just kinda leave and they call me and I'll say the dog needed to go home and like...yeah.

My answer, no, I don't feel the need to conform.

Ill let you all into a little secret. We all conform. It may not be to the extream, but it is true, we all conform. Without conformity, how can we have society? Society's are built on people conforming to one idea. Without it, we are broken.

Then again, it comes down to influence, and what people are influenced to do can change their conformity. The wrong conformity could equal disaster just as much as non.

No i don't conform physically, as i like being myself. Mentally is basically the same, although, i do assimilate ideas and theorys and make my own from what i get.

Heh, you defined conform not thinking anyone knows what it means. 90% of kids age 12-17 go through at least one stage where they complain about conformity and proclaim themselves "non-conformists".

All of us older folks look back on those years and find it funny how naive we were. :D

I'm such a non conformist that i'm not conforming to not conforming.

I would doubt me being a conformist, if I do anything its because I want to, although sometimes I find out something is really cool when it becomes popular so I start doing it. I used to "conform" when I was younger with like pokemon, but I really liked it too so I dont know

The world would be a whole lot better if little green men in UFO's came down to earth to abduct rednecks.

As a lot of people have said we all conform in different ways whether big or small. Another example (which I don't think has been used yet) is the fact that we need to conform as a society to the rules which are in place. If you don't conform to them then you're going to Jail. Get my point?

I get it, this is good conformity, it has a purpose. Most people want laws and order, so we conform to them to make the system work. Bad conformity is doing something agaisnt your will, just to be cool. Bad conformity is that stuff you see in the school yard.

So I suppose you can conclude there are two types of conformity - necessary and willful (good), and unnecessary and unwillful (bad).

I don't conform. I'm friends with most of the popular kids and most of the non-popular kids. To be honest, my school isn't too socially divided. A lot of people don't feel the need to conform to fit in. At some schools, band geeks get made fun of but at my school, the homecoming queen is in band. Most of the popular kids are also in high honors classes anyway so that eliminates the whole smart=nerd type of thing. I've never felt the need to dress a certain way or act a certain way to fit in.

Thats the same for what my school was really, although there were some social groupings, but they weren't 'enforced' if you like, i.e. no one cared what social group you were in.
