OT Debate Subforum

Featured Replies

Having seen a recent debate forum, i propose a new Off-topic debate forum, for simply stated, off topic issues not dealing with rs. This forum would allow actual debates to take place and arguements, extremely similar to that of the rs debate forum. This subforum or new forum, would not drain the OT forum of topics i believe, i looked in there a little bit, and there would still be pleanty of topics to go around 8-) . Anyway, if this has been brought up before, sorry...i just..forgot :-w

Most of the topics in OT form debates themselves.

But I wouldn't mind seeing a debate subforum.

The debates would be way better too

I support.

Whats so bad about using the regular OT section for debates? Im all for as little categories as possible, this would only create clutter

Could you imagine having a whole forum to debates. That would have no chance of survival in a "Family Forum." Not to mention that heaps of threads would be moved over to that forum after being posted on OT first, after a few people wanted to have a debate against each other about something.

I'm for the idea if it worked. But its just not going to work in my eyes.

Oh and also not to be a little over the top or anything but if someone was to say I like a certain Music Artist - on the Music & Movies board, and someone would then reply telling them of their dislike for that certain Music Artist; would then a mod have to move it to the debates sub-forum on OT because a debate has started? :? It's all a bit much for the mods, I'd say.

I'm with this guy. What's wrong with OT being used for debates?

As I see it the OT board itself is a debate forum. I think it would draw too much away from the main board and as I've seen people post there is already a shortage of truly good topics to sink their teeth into.

The rs based debate board was brought about by circumstances not really found in OT. The main purpose of the Rants forum is to complain about something in a hit and run style and this left a huge gap between these frankly spammy posts and the in-depth debates. I don't think OT is overrun with the sheer volume of really spammy two line complaints that were continually flooding Rants. Generally the OT board has far fewer of these posts that require locking than did the Rants board in the past.

Agreed.

To the OP, I don't think you understand what OT is to begin with. It is a debate forum, or at least was. Useless threads that have popped out just diluted it a lot. a lot. a lot.

thanks for the input. I agree, that the off topic is a debate forum in itself. But my intention was to have debates, like...well i can only describe it with topics.

"is the movie rating system a failure?" "should the legal age of consent be 16?" "should all schools adopt an honor code?" those are just some that come to mind i think, and this is what i had in mind, not like, pretzels or cheese its.

I would love to see that. If you ever go on the official forums, you would know that I am a big time debater XD. Hopefully, it won't attract Real Life issues >,

Agreed also.

Just take a look at some of the topics in there, and you will see that the Off-topic forum threads are just a bunch of debates.

The only way I think that would work out is just a sub forum strictly for debates. I believe if it was like that, people would take it too far (as in insults about touchy issues, etc.)

err, i don't actually see very many of what i'm talking about. 1 or 2 tops. This new sub-forum would allow the things i was talking about to have a spcific place.

Just bringing this up again, since if we had a debate forum it would keep at least some of the less intelligent people away who post stupid things.

Also people sometimes complain about all the topics on religion and politics, it's true they don't need too click on them. However people tend to take things personally when in a debate and hold grudges against people for their opinions. If we had a debate subforum we could have rules and advise on how to debate instead of how to insult people. Not possible at the moment in the OT boards because of the already huge amount of stickies.

I don't think there would be a lack of topics in OT because of this. For example :

offtopic.png

The topics circled would go into the new debate forum because they are subject too intense debate. Things like "How Is the EU" wouldn't despite it being Politics because it's not really intense debate.

Also, debates like "Circumcision: Yes or No?" require a more mature poster to debate the topic. Hopefully this forum would keep immature people away so the rest of us could discuss things in a better way.

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

I'm not totally convinced that having a debate forum for Off-Topic would keep out "less intelligent people." Sure it will ensure that only people looking for a debate would enter the forum, but you're always going to have people who post something that you deem unintelligent or unnecessary. I still don't think it's necessary that we have one, given that a large portion of the currently existing Off-Topic forum is in fact debating. So if we created a separate debate forum, it would leave Off-Topic pretty empty.

It would only be for intense debates really even the Sudan topic probably wouldn't be in the subforum. So 2 out of all the topics there would be. Off topic would still be home to the majority of topics. We could also have seperate rules for the debate forum which would instruct people how to debate. So hopefully people would learn something. As well as being able to contribute their opinion to the topic in a more intelligent manner. We even had a ban on politics and religon a few weeks ago because people were too insulting. If we had instructing rules and guidelines that wouldn't happen again.

Totally disagree.

I can just see that that would make OT more like the RSOF:

strde2.png

Less people would come into the forum, and that would filter debates to the most frequent debaters, and that would be boring and combined with the name would make the place forbodding to less frequent debaters and less fun. It's fine the way it is.

Bringing thread back again, as someone made a new one.

I totalaly agree. Less clutter=good

Besides, haveing a OT debate section would just add another unique aspect to the site. :D

The answer you're looking for is: Nothing at all.

Someone wanted an OT Help & Advice sub-forum. If that + the debate sub-forum are both added = no OT..it would be deserted <.<

I'm going to say 'no', and my reasons have already mentioned so I won't bother making myself sound repetitive.

However, I'm not of the belief Off-Topic = a debate section. There have been many threads, threads which personally don't interest me in the slightest, about amusing local issues, such as this one.

These threads don't offer much stimulus for a 'debate', as opposed to an informal chat. Threads such as this one however are much more suitable to be classed as a 'debate'.

There's a clear difference between the two, so saying OT would be empty with such a sub-forum is a view I personally don't agree with. However, I still don't feel the sub-forum actually merits its existance, so I'm still saying 'no', but I do appreciate there is a wider range of threads in OT than just debates.

I've been thinking about this for a long time. Political debates, economic debates and pretty well anything would go in here. People don't post OT debates in the Debate Club because it's not an OT debate forum. However, were there and OT debate club, I think we'd see an increase that would rationalize the decision.
