Quasar889
Read this link. It's about how permanent death would affect MMORPGS. I found it quite biased, but mostly true. What do you think? http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=57&id=742 You act like the game community is like the stinking bowels of hell.... In all reality.. its much.. much... worse. Quasar889
I think that there should be a limit on how many times you can die before you're erased. In a game like RuneScape, it makes more sense to have no death. However, in games like WoW et. al. I think it makes perfect sense to have permanant fatalities. Quasar889
Yes, that would be bad. I don't think this would apply itself well to RS, but the concept in general is one to be thought about. HatshepsutLecter
There is no way that I would play a game if my character was erased if I had died a certain amount of times. I am not going to play a game and work on a character if I was too afraid of dying to fight anything. maximumentropy
I must admit, I would be quite intrigued by a game where your character could die a permanent death. Although I don't think this could really fit into runescape as the game has been built around non-permanent death, I think that it would be a very enjoyable thing for a game to have, it would add that much more to the level of depth. DarkDude
Yes it does, but in Diablo you don't have to pay monthly fees. And to get to level 100 on diablo doesn't actualy take that long compared to Runescape.
Mordendravid
There are definitely styles of games to which (I think) a permanent death would improve game play. Runescape though is not one of them! Too much effort goes into building a single character for it to be wiped out by the Dag Kings, Dharock or worse still curiosity (click here to see what i mean) In order for permanent death to be incorporated into a game, without players leaving/losing interest everytime their character dies, individual players would need to control multiple characters and be able to add to these as they progress (e.g. A new player might start with 5 chars, an experienced player might have 100+). Obviously this brings about other problems - it would not be practical to control 100+ characters individually so the player would have to control alter-egos and set training/tasks whilst not actively playing on that character (say Age of Empires or Championship Manager style).. In other words the game would have to be of an extremely different format to Runescape for permanent deaths to not kill off interest in the game itself. As an aside though: I've seen people asking how Runescape might end (if it ever does) and permanent character deaths would be an interesting manner of doing this! Stephen9o3
I've played a mafia text-based game a long time ago that had permanent death. Pro's: Less idiots going around running their mouths (for fear someone would get fed up and kill them) Con's: Noobs saying "Give me all yor monies or i kil u wit me hih lvl main!!!!!!1111" Permanent death will never be implemented in Runescape nor do I think it should be. It would suck t have it in Runescape because it's all about how much time you play, and not really "skill". Combat FTL
n64jive
do you know any games with permanent death?...Even games on X-box, there is no permanent death, and you know why? If you had to start fresh everytime you died, how fun would that be. Permanent death is often suggested by players who think they are "Invincible"... Permanent death could sound fun on paper, but once you start playing ,it's not such a good idea. IMO permanent death would lead to more suicides than there already are in MMORPG's. pulli23
well permanent death would be really nice in a game which is meant to have a permanent death! ie I'm currently trying to program a game which has something like this: when you die everything you've done till then is measured according to this you get a rank between -100 and 100, -100 means you're really evil while 100 means you're good. Now if you die your character will be permanent death! (not erased!) - you'll have to start over, however you may now choose out of a wider set of characters (more evil or more good depending what you did before). Also people can see you're previously "deads" which will give you honour and will keep you playing (so in fact all is based on raising 1 stat), also the goals will change with every new char you get! However this is (sadly) not possible to implement in runescape.. why? well cause there are several things needed in such a game to be succesfull: - the game should be event based, not skilled based as is runescape (you would max out the skills you can get with your current character within 1-2 months in my game, then you'll be ready to fight/(re)build) - The game should be much more "predictable" - random chickens shouldn't pop-up somewhere behind your paladin while defending a gate! - It's very very hard to program! - the world isn't as predictable as now, and, well npc's should be mostly removed (or controlled by a human). Otherwise there can never be really progression in the game! - There should be some main story line which many people follow, well this isn't possible with runescape as too many people play it together, to get something like this you'll need small servers (worlds) in which like 2000 people play - and you shouldn't be able to move between a world! As you see there are just too many things which aren't in runescape to make such a game! First they came to fishingand I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing Then they came to the yewsand I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews Then they came for the oresand I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores Then they came for meand there was no one left to speak out for me.
