Bargain hunting in general shops! [updated 11/26/2007]
ixfd64 replied to ixfd64's topic in General Guides
I've made some minor updates to the guide. I've also added a wiki version that you can edit! -
I accidentally attacked a farmer, which I mistook as a player, and thought, "What the heck? I signed up as a non-PK!" I thought that level 4 smithing rocked. I thought that we would be stuck at 10 HP forever. :D

I remember that before we had the no-names rule (c. 2002), we used to have a Report Forum where we could report rule breakers. Some Jagex mods like Paul often lurked there! Also, way back in the day, some Jagex rules like multi-logging and character sharing weren't enforced all. People could publically post things like "Giving away my account" and get away with it. Even mods got into the act! Nowadays, if you did that, you'd be banned faster than you could say "Pass the pasta."
-
I also remember the April Fools of 2003. A mod posted fake pictures of the upcoming RS2. The next year, the Tip.It staff opened a fake staff forum and it had plans to break Jagex's rules. It was probably a nod to the 2002 hacking incident in which "Bob Marly" opened the staff boards to the public. :D I remember another good signature maker named Alex. He was a member of the Tip.It crew, but he was removed for posting "rate mah sig or go to hell and die!" He ended up being banned for over a year. (A one-year ban seems harsh, but then again, he ban evaded several times.)

I don't think Mad4u689 will be too happy if she sees this topic. ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã ÃâÃ

I remember that when I first joined, I was still an immature adolescent. When I first joined, i used 2 talk like this 4 som time. However, after all the years, I'm much more mature now. I think. I did get banned once on September 17, 2002, but then again, the admin who banned me was in a bad mood, and I was unbanned after several hours. I do remember that one of the earliest version of Tip.It didn't have word filters, and moderators manually edited swear words out. Back then even guests could post! However, this was disabled after some guy flooded the board with over 3,000 offensive topics. Tip.It started using word filters when it switched to phpBB2. Not long after, Jagex added their horrible chat filter, and even Tip.It stopped updating. I called that time the "Dark Ages." We then had a back-up board at ProBoards, and then we switched to DK3 hosting. We didn't like it much since the admins didn't have full control over the forums. We moved to scapeboard.com for a long time, and I remember when someone calling himself "Bob Marly" [sic] hacked both Tip.It and Zybez. In 2004, we moved back to the Tip.It domain. Ahh, memories.

I'm guessing that the GE will basically be player-owned shops. I don't know if we'll be able to set our own prices, though.

Unfortunately, there are more schools that have this silly policy than you think. For example, my cousin Cathy's middle school had a no-hug policy.

important news regarding my RuneScape character

LOL, you're making it sound as if sound had died. Pfft, it's only a game character. Oh, and he's unbanned now. :D -
Hmm, not everyone has a Facebook account. Why not consider using a site like Flickr or Photobucket?

Monday Poll: How many times have you quit RuneScape?
ixfd64 replied to MPM's topic in General Discussion
Well, I've officially tried to quit two times, but ended up coming back after a week. -
You should ask him what his username/level is. :D

important news regarding my RuneScape character
ixfd64 replied to ixfd64's topic in General Discussion
Well, it seems that someone reviewed my case again. My black marks have been retroactively removed! :D I'm not sure if I'll get my seven days of membership or my p-mod status back, though. I know that Jagex doesn't refund membership for banned accounts, but I've heard about a case in which a wrongfully banned player was given membership back. -

Actually, I wasn't using your case to gain support. I just wanted to show others examples of players being treated unfairly. Anyways, I've removed your name from my previous post per your request. I apologize for the misunderstanding. -

important news regarding my RuneScape character
ixfd64 replied to ixfd64's topic in General Discussion
I wonder if Jagex will add a rule 16: "You must not criticize RuneScape or any of Jagex's processes." -
Looks like either A) A query you sent in (if you did) was considered and they unbanned you B) Someone here sent in a query and they unbanned you C) They read your topic and unbanned you D) The random number generator unbanned you. I would think that event "A" was most likely what happened. It's likely that some Jagex mod with at least some adequate level of intelligence decided to read some of my queries I sent. For "B," Jagex never considers queries sent by third-parties. For "C," Jagex only considers messages sent to them via their website. For "D": if Jagex were to use a random number generator, I would have been unbanned as soon as I submit the first query. Of course, it's also possible that their RNG declined my first appeal.

important news regarding my RuneScape character

I've finally been unbanned! I'm no longer a player mod, though. If that was directed at me, then no. I've always thought of player mods as regular players, and indeed they are. I've always told fellow p-mods that no-one is immune to bureaucracy. -
Sadly, I'm not a moderator anymore. :( (I wouldn't mind if a fellow moderator recommended me, though.) It's very odd; I never sent in a last chance appeal, yet Jagex unbanned me. I hope I won't get banned again for some dumb reason.
-
Yay, I got unbanned! The strange thing is that I didn't even use my last chance appeal yet, and they told me that they decided to grant me a last chance. Odd?
-
So how'd you get banned? :P http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=713268 Apparently, Jagex thinks I hacked someone. Ironic, eh?

You guys are probably right. I did tell him that virtual items (a.k.a. RuneScape gold) won't help him very much, but he said that RuneScape was his life. I asked him why he didn't seek real-life friends for comfort, and he said that he didn't have any because nobody liked him. :?

The person in question wasn't really a "stranger," as you might say. It was more of a friend of a friend, so I thought I could trust him. On the positive side, I didn't get any keyloggers. I guess I should re-consider my personal policies on who is allowed to use my computer. -
Note: This is a sensitive topic, so be prepared. A week before I was banned, a player befriended me because he thought I was nice. He asked me if I would give him something for his 12th birthday, and I said "maybe." Some time later, he said that his mother had a heart attack, and he logged off for a while. After he came back online, he said that his mother had passed away. Previously, he had wanted some money from me, so I told him that he had to work for it, and I gave him some job options. However, after his mother's reported death, he said that he was no longer in the mood for working. That was totally understandable. Of course, I knew that this was likely to be a scam, and that he hoped that I would feel bad for him. I asked myself, why would a kid be playing an online game if his mother just passed away? However, there are people who indeed try to "escape" real-life problems by various means, such as playing games, drinking, taking drugs, and gambling. I also wondered, shouldn't this kid be with his mother at the hospital?, but I decided that it was also possible that his father made him stay at home. After all, many parents would not want to let their young children watch a loved one die. It all happened within a rather short time, but OK, it's possible that he lives close to a hospital. Yes, there are some disgusting people who will fake the death of a family in order to get virtual items, but this person's story seemed pretty convincing to me at first, and it wasn't like the generic "I have cancer, free stuff plz" scams. After all, I like to go with the concept of "innocent until proven guilty." He told me that he had access to his mother's character, and that she had always wanted a whip. Some of you may have heard of organizations like the Make-a-Wish Foundation or the Dream Foundation, which grants certain requests ("wishes") to people suffering from terminal illnesses. I decided to help his mother's character get one posthumously. Her character didn't appear in the hiscores but was already taken, so I assumed that the kid would train her character to 70 attack. I didn't really have the heart to report him for breaking rule 6, assuming that he was telling the truth. I finally decided to give him the benefit of the doubt, and I gave him about 1.3m worth of stuff, knowing that this could all be part of an elaborate scam. He asked for more, and while I told him that I felt sorry for him, I couldn't give him any more items. After some chatting with fellow player moderators, most had believed that this was a scam, but said that I handled this situation very well. After all, I think that it's important to help others recover from grief, and I will always try to make someone happy if I have the chance. Of course, real-life is far more important than a game, and I'd rather get scammed for 5m instead of facing the fact that someone's mother had just died. --- Did I go too far? What would you have done in this case? Comments welcome.

I've come to the conclusion that incorrect bannings are only one of the problems; the other problem is the customer support, or lack thereof. Of course, we are humans, and we make mistakes. An incorrect banning shouldn't be a problem, as long as customer support actually pays attention to it; in this case, the customer support does not offer the "support" it should. Andrew promised us "good customer support" when he announced the development of members in 2001. Whoa, I just saw a pig fly past my window! Did anyone else see that? Well, RSOF forum mods do tend to kiss up to Jagex, but that's not really the point.
