I'm not sure the time it takes really is because of the computer. Then again it's a thinkpad... I know that it can take time depending on the router as well. For example my laptop connects instantly to my router after sleeping, but when I'm at my parent's place, where they have a router given by their ISP, it takes my laptop about 3 minutes to connect.

Completely false. If you have an older computer, it is good to restart it once in a while to clear the memory though. Right, but that has nothing to do with the longevity of the computer. According to iStat, I haven't shutdown in 22 days; everything works fine. It depends on a lot of things, but 22 days is nothing at all, with any OS. He was talking about the number of year/months the computer will work, not days.

lolnorton Anyway I agree, while I haven't used it myself, podtopc seems to be a pretty good one, and I have never heard anything bad about it.

Facebook has had trouble for selling personal information, and people trust it more than google. I wouldn't trust Google either seeing their past.

How old is your computer? Specs would be helpful here.

+1 for Malwarebytes instead of Spybot S&D. Comodo is still in the good firewalls and Avast is still in the good antiviruses. If you're behind a router though there isn't really a need for a software firewall.

Is your computer a prebuilt? If it is, use the model number to get the drivers from the manufacturer's website. This way, except for the graphics driver (which you can get on the graphics card maker), you will have up to date drivers for your computer. And I also don't understand why so many people were saying bad things about Vista. I've never had any problems with it and still have a Vista installation on one of my computer. I have Windows 7 on the 2 other computers. One thing that even works better in Vista than 7 is that it doesn't slow down with time. I can run it for months without restarting it, and am only restarting that computer when I have updates, while I have to shut down my Windows 7 computers at least once a week because of slowness. The Vista one is still as fast when I go on it after even a month of the computer being on. Can't say the same with XP though, in which I had way more issues than Vista and 7 combined.

Upgrading the OS would just be adding the price. If he doesn't want to spend, there is no need to upgrade OS. Also, SSD might be out of his price range. I would suggest going with Western Digital Caviar Black (for best performance, but there are other Caviars as well), any size.

A format is like deleting everything that's on your hard drive, so you will have to re-install all of the programs you used daily. You can go get your files in the Windows.old though, like images, documents and stuff.

Really depends on what you really want. For Itunes and Steam, I have no idea as I do not use them. For Windows live messenger, you can use Pidgin. For Microsoft word, the compatible program is Open Office, although I heard that there are new ones since Java was bought by Oracle. You can install them side by side, which is called dual boot, but you have to make a partition on your hard drive for it. It is a good idea if you want to try it and not lose Windows right away.

Why do you think they added the ditch? They did it because of lurers. People getting lured are losing their stuff by their own faults.

+1 I used to play Xbox on a computer monitor, and nowadays almost all of them come with an HDMI port as well. Make sure yours doesn't have one before you go about buying something like that.

You realize a lot of people think computer parts cost a lot more than they really do, right? People seem to think you need to spend thousands and thousands to get a good computer when that just isn't the case. Point is telling him a $200 card when all he plays is runescape is just sort of wasting the guy money (and the card might not even work for him). While I very strongly agree with you, spending thousands of dollars on a computer only happens when they get kind of decent prebuilt. I still regret getting a prebuilt HP for $2k 5 years ago. At least I'm now on a computer that is much stronger and that I built myself for $600. Anyway, prebuilt being, that's why people think computers cost much more than they actually do.

Ad block plus for Chrome hides the ads. Ad block plus for Firefox completely stops the ads from loading.

I only lived in a city 6 months, but I still don't regret having a manual car. Although there are hills that are a pain in the ass because of traffic lights at the top.

Hahaha, it's not cheaper here either. Most kids don't get that good of car. As for insurance, from the When I was gonna buy the Rx8 (look at top of page), I called the insurance company and for me at 17 with that car that's worth 7000 usd, it would be $1036 every 6 MONTHS just for insurance. Probably going to be the same thing for me insurance wise when I get a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer this summer or the one after... The Echo is just too light for driving on snow.

Ahh such a nice car. Ridiculous that you got that as your birthday present though lol.... In general, I've noticed Americans having much nicer first cars than folks from the UK/Europe, that car is unreal compared to the first car I and many people I knew had. We'd get raped off the insurance companies over here if we tried to insure a car like that when we were 17. Same in Aus. its costs about $4k JUST for a slightly decent car with the average features like A/C, power steering and not so fuel guzzling, and the insurance is total BS. cost me ~$600 to fully rego/insure mine last year. took me 3 months to save up enough to afford it, AND ITS A FREAKING PEICE-OF-CRAP SEDAN! Same in Canada for what you said, but the difference is that even if I have been driving my 2002 Toyota Echo that had 2 minor accidents before I owned it, and I have been driving for the last 7 years and never had an accident, I'm still paying over $1000 CAD in auto insurance per year. Thats pretty ridiculous. Theres certain car models over here that insurance companies will put the premiums up on due to their popularity with "boy racers" and modders, Honda Civic for example. A second hand Civic here, one of the older models, wouldn't cost all that much meaning it would be a good first car for someone, easy to drive, cheap and easy to find parts and stuff for. Phone the insurance company up, they find out you're a 20 year old male wanting to insure a Civic and think, "Ah, he's gonna mod the hell out of it then wrap it round a tree...give us [absurd sum of money] each year". But I have an Echo, not a Civic haha. But I agree, and I think it's a good thing they do that, makes it harder for young people to afford it and have accidents with their modded civics [or insert sporty car here].
