DDOSing In Scape
For those of us that don't know what a DDoS is: Think of an elementary school teacher, trying to talk to another teacher, with about seven or eight other kids trying to get her attention as well. Internal LAN IP address = irrelevant; all that matters is that they can see *your* outside IP address. Then, they proceed to flood it with nonsense, causing your machine to stop whatever it's doing and pay attention to their requests. You can turn on your firewalls to drop excessive session connections, and you can also make sure it blocks excessive pings as well. If you're concerned about it: Don't go anywhere where your IP address can be seen by anyone other than an administrative authority.

16th June 2009 Bounty Worlds and Gravestones
For whatever reason I doubt that...perhaps the PvP items are going to replace what was equivalent on Freeplay. If they were made for freeplay, then PKing on that side of the fence just got a whole lot better.

16th June 2009 Bounty Worlds and Gravestones
Yay! No more Slayer-related drop tables in PvP! This is enough to get me excited about PvP again anyway. Even if I can't PK to save my life. :D

I feel that this update is pure win, if only for removing key Slayer and boss NPC related drops out of the drop tables. Now I can finally Slay with confidence... :D

Is RS Your 'Dirty Little Secret?'
A couple of people, close family members, and my CS colleagues are vaguely aware of the fact that I play this game. Funnily enough, I've never been challenged or insulted because I did. Of course...the field that I'm in/atmosphere I'm in is actually very, very forgiving of stuff (but breathe a word about Vista vs. Linux and expect to be tossed over a fence). As for the situation in the library: It'd make me feel better about the future of the world if the other kid hid their terminal instead. Think about that one for a moment. :?

Summer Goals and Whatnot
Let's see. - 92 Smithing (almost done with that already) - Project and save cash for 80 RC - 99 HP - 90 Slayer - 70 Summoning, in the off chance that I feel like burning cash with that skill - 80 Construction, "" "" ""... - Project and save cash for 84 or 90 Crafting (haven't decided yet) - 80 Mining...probably not - 80 Thieving - Odd goals throughout the summer, going to play and have fun when I have the free time. Learning Python as a group project, setting my Fall semester classes, and hacking (the good kind of hacking) my laptop/tower to get boot time under 20 seconds is pretty much what's on the docket as well.

Freeloaders on Fishing Trawler?
Wonder if you'd call this playing Anti-Devil's Advocate then. Freeloaders may not be doing anything wrong, but they're not doing anything right, either. The Trawler minigame is a cooperative game in which everyone has to (or should have to) participate to get the reward at the end. Anyone can say anything they like about how smart it is to have others work for you, blah blah blah. Just like the story of the hen and the grain* - if you didn't help me get these fish, you sure as hell ain't going to help me sell them. *: For those that need a reminder - the Hen asked for help around the barnyard with some grains she had collected. No one would help her during the process of making the grain to flour, and from flour to bread - but everyone was more than happy to help with eating the bread.

Skillers
Here's how I've always viewed pures (not just skillers): They handicap themselves to enjoy the game for themselves more. It doesn't bug me that they do it, and I'm most certainly willing to let them do it, so long as they don't complain about their own conscious choices and limitations.

32 bit or 64 bit?
What I've noticed about 64-bit OSes is that they retain some sort of middle-ground 48-bit compatibility mode, just in case. Are you telling me that Snow Leopard is fully 64-bit? That'd be interesting to see.

11th June 2009 - Macro-detection systems update
What Is that supposed to mean? I wonder if it was a thinly veiled, prepared, and thought-out attempt to defend botting. Rule #1 of rulebreaking: Time is IRRELEVANT. Thank you.

11th June 2009 - Macro-detection systems update
Okay, so the news announcement does come off as a little propaganda-y (definitely not a word), but it does hammer the point home nicely. Let's be fair - there isn't a way to 100% detect everything, but to be truthful, we can't be sure of what percentage they're actually detecting. Jagex will never reveal how their macro detection schema works. I would put the estimate at something like 74-90% of all existing macros, and probably a little less for all private/unknown macro schema. Even if I'm sugarcoating the results a little bit, and the numbers are lower, Jagex has assured the public that they make certain that the person getting banned deserves the ban. This part is done by hand. This improves their detection schema from whatever-it-was-before to around 94-96%. Jard: Show me one example of source that can convincingly pass the Turing test. That's the only way that a bot could ever not be detected.

Does the forum need a moderator?
Yeah, I feel a dedicated moderator to these boards would be a welcome addition. I also kinda like the Hall of Flame idea too...not sure why, but I like it anyway.

9th June 2009 - Run Energy Update / Patch Notes
Normally, with a major bug, rollbacks are typically reserved for the most severe of them, as I only recall one ever happening. Today I think that would have warranted a rollback. - No one would have been adversely affected within 37-90 minutes of the update - Fight Cavers that noticed a whole bunch of nonsense going on would have been smart enough to stay the hell away from the game - The only people that would have been affected were those that abused the bugs (a-la free Sigils, Fire capes (illegit), and KQ/KBD/GWD/TDers) - The bug did not cause widespread damage, and not everyone lost things; however, anytime something enters the economy in an easier fashion, it suffers. It's a fine line they walk, really. In the clutch I would have actually optioned against the rollback, probably because not everyone was affected directly by a loss of data. Even though Jagex may not ban anyone, I sure hope the ones that abused the bugs intentionally get a swift kick in the [wagon].

9th June 2009 - Run Energy Update / Patch Notes
To recap: Being able to power-cut or power-mine ores is NOT a bug? If that's so, then it looks like I'll be getting 80 Mining today. :o If not, I'll get it around January 2013. EDIT: Hey, found the answer to my own question. QFC 15-16-45-58950017, 5th page.

9th June 2009 - Run Energy Update / Patch Notes
The updates are a mixed bag. A good bag, but I kinda enjoyed getting Dagannoth/Abyssals twice in a row. Not bothered by it anymore; now I can finally get the chance for other, more fun tasks. I'm surprised that they finally fixed the Agility bug. Took 'em long enough. Mage icons, rest, and agility usefulness = pure win. I'm quite pleased with this update. As for the bugs...all I can say is: Don't do anything until the coast is clear.

The word noob should be censored.
I honestly laughed out loud. Thanks. Anyway, since I don't feel like dissecting your post ideal for ideal, I'll put it like this: If you can't ignore it when you're called a noob, you shouldn't be on the Internet.

Profanity: Legally Bypassing the RS Censor
I strongly dislike filtering of any kind; I actually believe in free speech. I also strongly dislike children/teenagers using profanity to either make a joke or insult someone. The latter will always take precedence, since I'd rather hear dialogue without four or five letter words coming from teens that think they're grown-up, than I would to let them let loose like a sailor. It'd be nice to see a game without a filter, but then, we're faced with an issue of trust. Can you *trust* the RS community to be obedient and use polite speech, and "adult" language when the situation may call for it? If the RWT updates are any indication, then we should all know the answer to that. Even if they were to make "adult" servers, there's no way to 100% guarantee that the players are adult without providing *too much* information. Funnily enough, that's why I oppose that in the first place. Truth be told, we often times fill in the stars. Suppose I was referring to an unpleasant situation, and I said, "***** it, I'm going to the KBD." What do you think I said? What did I actually say? In retrospect, suppose my 'o' and '0' key worked sporadically (hey- there's an O in my name!), and the starred out phrase now read "frget". It's very, very realistic that it was filtered out, since it sound like an offensive phrase now. Remember - to assume means to make an [wagon] out of you and me. And, with the circumstances of WBMs and report-happy clanmates, I'm going to be the one that gets the short end of the stick.

32 bit or 64 bit?
I personally don't like Vista, but if I had to upgrade to a Windows OS, I'd wait until Windows 7 hit the shelves. I'm actually considering upgrading my system to use full 64-bit OSes, starting around November (Karmic is set to release around that time). Many of the problems I used to have, such as drivers not working right, or a few devices failing sporadically, are starting to become things of the past. I'm curious as to if anyone here has done any actual benchmarking with a 64-bit system. If you're the type of guy to bring your system to your knees, what did you do and what did you use under a 32/64 bit environment? This also segways into if anyone's noticed any performance improvements (stalls or hiccups) when shifting platforms, too.

Bannable offense
This. Mentioning that you bought the account, even if it was a joke, was probably the dumbest move you could have made.

32 bit or 64 bit?
Right now I'm sitting on a laptop with 2GB of RAM, a dual-core AMD processor, and a 64-bit distribution of Ubuntu Jaunty. Ever since 64-bit OSes went mainstream, there's been a lot of hesitation and fear about moving over to one, but I could say that most of these fears are rather unfounded. I'm curious if anyone else here actually runs a 64-bit system, or if they've been considering it. There are a few more perks to running a 64-bit system than 2^64 bytes of addressable memory, you know. ;) Many of the newer OSes, such as Vista and OS X/Leopard either are or have 64-bit variants already, and given the right push towards larger memory requirements, we'll have no real choice in the end. [it'd be nice to get a 128-bit system going soon...but we'd never be able to use all of that memory anyway.] So let's get a good discussion going. Do you use a 32 or 64 bit OS? Why would you use one over the other? I'll get the ball rolling. I have a tower as well as a laptop which happens to have 4GB of RAM installed, but it runs both 32-bit variants of XP and Ubuntu Intrepid. Why aren't I using 64-bit at least with Linux? There has been some difficulty in getting most of what I tinker with on a daily basis to work reliably under a 64-bit system, such as RS fullscreen, DVD playback, in many cases, and what I feel is a more bloated program experience. (I understand that a 64-bit program will use more memory than a 32-bit program, but still...) I do like the idea of using 64-bit systems, so I put that on my laptop to give it a whirl. A few of the nuisances are going away, and I'm slowly learning my way around the system...but that doesn't justify a full conversion to 64-bit just yet for me.

Mod Mat K & Manipulator clans Debate
You know...ultimately, Mod Mat K denied any manipulation whatsoever on his part. He offered some valid theories as to why they crashed all of a sudden (somewhere within the first fifteen pages; I know it's a long read, but it's probably worth it). Consider that Jagex also had kept the option of manual manipulation open in dire cases. I really don't think that a sudden [bleep]e in Limpwurts denoted a dire case. There's too many variables - were Limps truly bought out? Did the clans have someone working against them? Was there a rival merchant clan really trying to bring their product down? Of course, I'm clutching at straws, but it goes to prove that there's more than one explanation as to why Limps took such a dive. Lastly, a comment about a "free" market - in my eyes, it's nothing more than a pipe-dream at best. No market, no matter what, can ever be 100% free. I feel this way because I know that people (read: merchants) are hard-headed; if they could set the price to whatever the heck they wanted, I don't think that anyone here would be able to afford D Claws or anything else we wanted. Not interested in getting into a debate about it right now, though - you have your views on a free market, I have mine. Let's let that alone for now.

Should the playing time be limited when playin RuneScape?
You don't believe that an addiction can confuse a person's eating habits? You really don't think that an addiction to a game can make a person think that they're not hungry or thirsty when, in fact, they really are? Believe me, it can happen, and it's a decent warning sign when dealing with an addict.

Should the playing time be limited when playin RuneScape?
I don't feel that time should be limited for any one person, but if it gets in the way of their life (relationships, school, hygiene, work, and/or other responsibilities), then it's time for them to get cut. I really don't think that Jagex should really hold anyone's hand in this regard, since it's neither their fault nor responsibility that a person decided to spend 21 hours on their game. Using the "I paid for it" argument seems fallacious...consider that drug addicts pay for their drugs, does that mean they have a right to use it? Or should they not seek help? I don't feel that Jagex should have to tell us when to stop playing, but I do think that parents keep forgetting that they can cut the power to the house. That usually turns off the computer (failing that, at least the modem dies).

Learning Java
Start here; the Java tutorials do a great job of explaining the first few nuisances and confusions for a beginner. I personally found the Wikibook to be a bit too full of filler, but it's alright. I'd go with the Java tutorials though.

Here we go again. SwiftKit illegal to use
Yeah...if only Swiftkit was governed by Dutch law...from the looks of a quick WHOIS, it looks like Strider's based out in Australia. AFAIK, there's no law like that in Australia. Anyway, it's absolutely possible to detect what people are using to visit a site. So don't go around saying that it's not detectable, because that's just flat-out wrong.
