Prostitution, should it be legal?
So you would rather the industry continue as it is, than have its employers liable to the same regulations that other businesses abide by? Did you clamour in protest when factory owners were forced to start giving a damn about their employees as well, because you knew a man who'd been injured on the production line?

If you could make a game...
A brutal steampunk RPG based around pirates, eldritch horrors from beyond the stars, and the worst aspects of human nature. Heavy on the GRIMDARKness. The premise is basically PIRATES IN AIRSHIPS. Actually, I'm in the process of writing up a D&D campaign which is basically that.

Drivers permit
How could anyone possibly think that driving a manual in an urban area is a good idea? I have better things to do than change gears every thirty seconds because of traffic lights. And on an automatic, at least I can eat, drink or fondle the girl in the passenger seat and still be able to drive.

Drivers permit
I failed my first test because I said a pedestrian should give way to a vehicle. I'd think that was common sense that hey, it's a car, I won't walk in front of it. But yeh now I know that cars have to give way, which does make sense, can't run them over. A lot of the questions are worded to trick you too. In theory pedestrians have right of way at all times. In practice, it takes a special kind of person to walk out in front of a ton of steel moving at 60kph+.

Victorian Bushfires
The main difference is that southeastern Australia also has to deal with dry (low humidity) heat and very little water. And we've got a huge honking hole in the ozone layer right above us.

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
That's interesting, Mel. Can you provide an outline and source for the cognitive structures that they form, viz. involuntary reflexes?

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
I love how you bolded the part of my paragraph that you replied to, but still failed to read it. I am supporting the parent's right to choose to get an abortion. I am not choosing for them by saying, 'You are unsuitable, get an abortion.' Children go through their first stage of cognitive development in the first two years of life (See: Piaget), not during the stages of pregnancy where it is safe to abort. Though how you can hope to reduce it to a scientific debate is beyond me, as this is, at its heart, a moral issue for many people. Hard science will not account for a rape victim who lives with a constant reminder of the crime in the form of an unwanted child. Those statistics do not account for reasons why abortions were performed. You might also note that the top 20 countries in that list are Slavic or Latin countries that do not generally sport excellent standards of living. Also, in your Australia example, you might note that the region with the lowest rate of reported legal abortions (Northern Territory, 4.9%) also happens to be the region which experiences the highest incidence of child abuse in the country.

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
I'm surprised that you were actually expecting a straight answer, given that your original question had no bearing on anything I'd said, and was verging on an ad hominem by implying that I am comfortable with murder. Your equating abortion to the slaying of a newborn child is one which is, I suppose, necessarily slanted to prop up your opinion on the matter; however, it is ultimately fallacious in that there is a world of difference between a three month old baby and a safely abortable fetus. That being that the child has human cognitive functions, whereas the embryo/fetus does not. I didn't even have to deliberately allude to China or Russia for you to make the connection in your mind. How fitting that you instantly link abortion to two of the cruelest regimes on the planet. It is certainly representative of the way you choose to approach the subject. I love the way you misinterpret the question as an idle alibi for murder. I ask you, in simple terms, how you can live with yourself for chastising others who, unlike you, are the ones who actually have to make the difficult decision to abort? If you were criticising them for a premeditated slaying carried out in the full knowledge of, and disregard for, the consequences of their act, you might have a case. Except, unlike your strawman of an example, the greater balance of people do not abort because they like it. It's all very well for you to condemn them as murderers, but people who abort are not necessarily the callous butchers that you seem to imply they are. It is far from a trivial choice for anyone but the most maladjusted of people.

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
And what gave you the idea that I would take the right to choose away from their parents? Who, coincidentally, are the ones who will be taking themselves to the abortion clinic, rather than being rounded up and forced to abort. The parents (or, as it happens, parent) are the ones who are in the best position to decide whether they can bring themselves to bring a child into their sort of life. Who are you to impose your morality on them when it is they who - as pro-lifers so love to point out - have to decide to destroy a life and live with the guilt of that decision?

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
And I suppose you don't step on grass, pick flowers or eat meat and plants either? Because if all living beings are equal in your eyes, well, I can see where a few complications might turn out. Maybe you should consider that some children are brought into lives where death would be a blessing. And that they wouldn't have to suffer in the first place if their mother could have aborted.

It's the same as in tabletop. Chaos Marines have always been exactly like Space Marines, except with lower tech, more melee focus and OMG DAEMONS.

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
By 'unsuitable' I meant physically or psychologically unable to bear and/or support a child. And you don't suppose any eyebrows would be raised, seeing as this so-called 'scientific evidence' cites references which are all invariably two or more decades old?

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
Read: Arguments that don't revolve around comparisons between abortion and Nazi Germany. So now I'm not allowed to compare? I think not, I will compare all I like. I am being completely reasonable about it, but all you are doing is telling me not to. You can't even give me a reason. Here's one: Because comparing the destruction of a non-sentient object which has the potential to develop into a human life and, as a consequence, be forced to endure circumstances that are: a) physically and psychologically damaging to it; B) beyond its control to change; and c) further detrimental to the well-being of unsuitable parents; to the intentional murder of millions to: a) punish a scapegoat for the loss of a war and the economic slump which followed it; and B) satisfy an idea of racial purity; is to make a connection that no rational person can, save in ignorance of the realities of both acts. If you want to compare abortion to something you find abominable, don't compare it to the Holocaust. I very much doubt that women who get abortions or the doctors who perform them are callous monsters who believe with all their hearts that the unborn child can never be seen as a human being. I also very much doubt that they torture the embryo for months before terminating it.
