  1. yea those creases are too strong on the face, it should really be toned down a tad, good observasion by tom, just looking at references can help point out where you may be goin wrong, we tend to draw what we think a face looks like rather than illustrating what it actually should look like. http://www.ohlalaparis.com/photos/uncat ... e_face.jpg I further editted my edit to try illustrate how I'd go about softening the creases, had a go at the eyes if that helps atall. Also reduced the light around the jaw to create the illusion of stuble haha.. Fixed more AAing, but didnt do too much. dont think the smile should be soo OTT as what tomdavies suggested but maybe it was too stubbern looking, it'd be interesting to add a bit expression to the character. Hope im not concentrating on the characters face too much, I just think you should work on this section by section. The face is a crucial part of this image, your eyes drawn to his face expression instantly. hope that helps.

typography can say as much as any image, I think you've got the right way of thinking but I agree you could experiment more with how you go about this. I wouldn't say just plop a render into the background, but think outside the box.. A good way to look at this would be to actually type it on a typewriter, print it out and take a high quality picture of the result. you could also mess around with the line spacing, don't have it perfectly dead centered.. Having image/text slightly above the center is somehow easier on the eye, especially on display. I quickly made an edit, probably a bit OTT on the back image, I know it wasn't your intention but I do think being a bit more creative could be to it's advantage. Just a suggestion. I like the idea tho, keep it up.
  4. lol looks much better with the beard imo, just posting to give a little cc. im mega bored. >> messed round with the palette a bit, some of the shades seemed too close.. I thought the greenish shade stood out a bit too much, tried to unify everything.. Your AAing is improving but your still not using your palette to the fullest of its extent, tried to AA areas more. Your dithering sure is more stylised but still remember what dithering is supposed to accomplish, if you want two colours to interlace smoothely I wouldn't use a dithering technique that'd make it stand out too much, juggling the Hue/saturation with a more gradual technique seems to work well. also tried to illustrate some suggestions throughout my edit, the lips for example, the nostril etc.. good job, keep it up. Ter out -
  5. I wouldn't say this is manga pomar, learning how to draw manga wont make this any better, he simply needs to develop his skills of drawing the human body. I do believe he's had some strong improvements, and is most likely well aware of any tutorials out there.. I do agree that the gold should shine, a quick look through gold references wouldn't go amiss.. your character skill lacks depth in places, Im getting the impression that he's flat.. Think of the light source, for example his jacket would cast a dark shadow onto his shirt.. simple things that are missed can give the wrong impression.. Just really try and imagine what would be lit up and what wouldn't.. were no light can reach should be incredibly dark, and anywhere that directly is hit by the light should me much lighter.. The face follows this but I think parts of this image is missing basic lighting. The gold snake statue thing is blocking the light to the two other object right of it, so why are they lit up? my advice would be to just go mad lookin for reference images..
  6. nice work hiimben, your proportions are pretty good, the placement of everything seems pretty good and it certainly looks like you know what you're doing.. My crits would be that with a fire in a dark room everything would be lit up much more that you have illustrated, even on a low flame I'd expect more contrast.. I've made a rough edit on the face to demonstrate; I'd up the contrast firstly, and definately change the hues of each shade because the light emitted from the flame would effect everything much differently than an ordinary white light would. its essential to add those highlights, it further acts towards giving the face some shape.. gl

Instead of making signatures, why not simply work on those areas that concern you, if you have trouble with trees for example.. just draw a tree, and try your best to pixel it.. without the background, just concentrate on the tree and post it here for critisism. Pixelling is a form of art, not just a technique in which to make a forum signature.. remember that your end result doesnt have to act as a sig. A good way of bringing out the inspiration in yourself is to give yourself a task, with restrictions on colour and a time limit.. See what you produce.
  8. wow your getting pretty good b2d, the only problems I can see is your proportioning needs a dad more consideration.. but yea your colouring/shading has vastly improved since I last saw your work, congratz.
  9. Pixel art is a form of art created digitally (on a computer) using only limited techniques (pure), which means no automatic filters, everything must be manually pixelled. Anything placed must be placed for a particular reason that effects the overall image when viewed at 100%, any automatic AAing is not seen as pure pixel art because it calculates and adds new pixels without any decision from yourself, eliminating careful placement. Don't do pixel art just because everyone else seems to be doing it, its a fad to most people here. Maybe you would prefer other forms of digital art?

I too wish to become an animator, I've learnt so far is that to be a great animator, you first need to be an excellent draftsman and a superb artist. The animation side of the job can be learnt quickly, but the illustration side must be developed as soon as possible. You'll have no problem getting onto an art course in GCSE's, I personally chose to do a Graphic Design course because it can then branch off into several areas such as Illustration, art, animation, Digital art, photography, media studies, film, journalism, fashion etc etc. Art tends to be too 'fine art' and totally bypasses the technical side of graphics, which means theres almost no working with computers which I personally think is terrible considering today is very much a computer based generation.. And if you want to be an animator you'd want as much knowledge and qualifications as you can get your hands on.. And just because you do a graphic design course does not mean you can't develop your art skills aswell, infact a lot of the time it increases your chances of achieving higher marks. You could even chose to do a media studies course if you want to get further into the film side of animation, because at the end of the day it all starts off as ideas, script, storyboarding etc.. Remember you've got the rest of your life to get to what you wanna be, there's a few college courses you can take which will lead you in the same direction. It's really up to you what you do, don't do something that doesn't interest you. Oh btw Im coming to the end of my 2 year course in Graphic design at college, and in september im off to start another course in general art. The animation course in university I want to go for requires an extra year at college to go along with my 3 A levels. seriously, just do what interests you and keep in mind what you need for university.
  11. This definately wasn't traced, are you kidding? for personal taste I'd probably give the tree more balance, atm it looks like its bending a tad too much.. But I suppose trees do do that. good styling
  12. i may enter something, ive got some free time today anyways.
  13. I think its nice for a first atempt, just keep in mind that the sky isn't usually pitch black, id expect the tree to be a silhouette. I made a mega quick edit to suggest how i'd tackle ice. hope id helps atall.. make sure your colours arent too saturated.
  14. evolution will never stop, we devoloped the ability to invent didnt we? we invent to meet our needs in every day life, so technically we're solving what could be a trigger of evolution. Millions of years ago we had fur to keep us warm in the cold, today we have clothes. were we would of had to shout to communicate long distances, we have telephones, internet etc. I believe we're taking over our own evolution in some respects, we choose to adapt to whatever environment. but we are bound to evolve due to this global warming, theres nothing we can do to stop it, we can only slow down the inhebitable because really, we're still in the iceage if you all already didn't know. as long as there is ice-caps we're still in the iceage, naturally it is constantly melting slowly, we've just speeded up this process with global warming.
  15. i live in the uk, I figured foxes were smaller than that, certainly looked like one. edit- jst researched foxes, they do look pretty big.. jeez It definately was a fox.. the one I saw looked all tatty and evil tho haha.
  16. lol I was workin tonight (at a shop), finshed an hour ago and closed up. Got a train home and from the station I got off at its 20 minutes walk to my house. Its pitch black with a few street lights in the distance and I notice two eyes across the road, I thought it was a cat or something but it started running in my direction. I thought; 'oh god a stray dog..' but it wasn't barking, it was like hissing or something, definately a fox or somethin.. I crossed over the road and started walkin fast to get out its way, but it was chasin me haha.. I was actually pretty scared, it wasn't like a small fox it was like the size of an alsation or something, I'd say it was a wolf but we dnt get wolves around where I live. Well I got in safe but seriously, that was scary..
  17. you've been a great addition to the communtity, farewell runemetsa.
  18. im too addicted to quit haha, believe me Ive tried many times.. I wnt be going anywhere soon..
  19. wow thx for the crits, I love it when people take the time to observe and give an honest opinion. Im actually not using the vector one as reference anymore im relying more on observing my face in a mirror, but the general shading does come from how I originally intented it to be.. I totally agree with you about softening some of the lines, the ear for example just looks waay too dark, giving it more of a cartoony outlined effect, I need to stop thinking in outlines and more in shaped and shade. thx again for your comments.. heres what I started from btw.. yea ur not interested.. > > >
  20. >> slight update.. well pjb it aint finished :-s getting the likeness is terribly hard but it does look much more like me now.

Yeah great as always tttia, theres a lovely atmosphere to this. Its always good to challenge yourself. I'd love to see a bit more contrast in places, the rocks for example look relatively dark compared to the water, nothing too dramatic but considering the rocks would be soaked some highlights wouldn't go amiss imo.. keep it up.
  22. I changed the palette, it seemingly had too much of a yellow tint to it.. Altered Vans Logo, didnt want to stray too far from what it was. I thought the text was way too plain, researched some typographers and realised its alright to be playful with each individual letter. oh and on the same subject my next project is to make a website for our newly branded trainers, you'll all be happy to know that im gonna be doing a lot of pixel art for this, even though vector would be the obvious way to go, we have to use Dreamweaver. I started converting this into pixel art, now I know why I prefer this media.. only just started this like an hour ago.
