  1. Why are you using MS Private folder? It's a total pain in the posterior! Just download it to your normal download location instead. Get rid of MS PF, it really is naff. Do you know MS are pulling it? Or have they already done that? It's easier to encrypt a folder for your profile anyway, and much more effective.
  2. If you do not have a Security tab then that's because of two possible reasons: 1. You're running XP Home edition. You may want to try Bac_Talan's option there, as XP home is a swine when it comes to security. 2. If you're running XP Pro then simple file sharing is turned on by default, and that makes Pro into a home style system. To turn Simple file sharing off do the following: Go to My Computer, and click on the Tools menu, select Folder Options. Click the View Tab and scroll down to the bottom. Untick Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) and click OK. Your system should now should have the Security tab back. Don't forget this is for XP Pro only and not XP Home.
  3. Also the architecture of the machine has a lot to do with the speed of your PC. i.e. is the Ram dual channel, is the Video PCIE, is it a SATA system, what's the clock speed of the FSD & RSB, etc etc etc. I bet an new system running at half the CPU clock speed will out do an old system running at twice the clock speed. Unless you're using the CPU for computational purposes such as ray tracing the newer architecture will always win.
  4. Access denied usually means you do not have permissions to delete the files. There are 3 possible causes for this: 1. The files are in use, you cannot delete files that are running. Try booting in safe mode and deleting them. 2. You don't have write/delete access to the files. Right click the files, select Properties, and then select the security tab. the files attributes are there. Make sure all the allow boxes are ticked and NONE of the deny boxes are ticked. 3. You don't have ownership of the files. As in step 2 this option is under the advanced security section. Now, I need to ask what Windows version you are running, as that will effect how much you can actually play with security on files.
  5. lol. [cabbage]! My PC is slowly undoing everything I have done in the past 2 years, help! I could only imagine a CPU "un-processing" as it just going backwards through everything that happened. Hehe. I wonder if the processor would be called "The Intel Paradox Induction Threading -2.8GHz"? Or TIPIT -2.8GHz for short
  6. Actually there's a quick section on Assist-X written by Dracion all about it, you can view it here :)
  7. Does -2.8Ghz mean the PC is going back in time or un-processing?
  8. Regarding svchost, a lot of processes use it including Windows updates. Try turning off Windows updates for a while to see if this speeds things up as I know there was a major memory leek in the updater code which used to cause svchost to suck up anything up to 99% of your precious CPU time. See HERE for more information.
  9. My main gripes are the following: 1. CSS slightly broken, meaning some websites get misaligned DIVs. Unless it's corrected it will mean that us web devs now have 3 main CSS standards to code for, this is going to be a major headache. 2. A LOT of addons don't work, Tab Mix Plus is one :(. 3. I hate the way the address history is displayed, two lines with the name and then the description underneath is totally naff and is awkward to scan quickly to find that website you typed in 3 weeks ago. 4. Google toolbar doesn't work correctly with it, the spell check option has an intermittent problem meaning you cannot stop it once you have started it. So far that's my initial findings, the rest is fine but I think I am going back to FF2 until all the problems are sorted.
  10. D_V_Devnull was quite right. Nortons internet security has a firewall, and firewalls work by breaking the IP stack, and inserting themselves in the break so they can control the traffic. If you uninstall the firewall it should reset it back to normal. But because you just stopped the firewall service, you ended up with a broken IP stack and no software to pass packets back and forth. There is one thing you can do without uninstalling nortons completely, and that is to repair the IP stack by typing the following into a command prompt: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
  11. OOPS, sorry, my fault for not reading the OP's post properly. Probably word blindness after staring at code for hours on end
  12. You can change the font sizes on most browsers including Firefox. Here's how: Hold down the CTRL key, while holding it down use the mouse wheel or + and - keys to change font sizes.
  13. Not on FireFox or Internet Explorer, CTRL+O opens up the Open File Dialogue box
  14. I assume you're talking about your browser, with all the fonts etc are now huge? While holding down the CTRL key, use the mouse wheel or the + and - keys to change the font sizes in browsers.
  15. What graphics card do you have? You need to know the manufacturer and model. Then type the manufacturer into google, go to the drivers section of their website, locate your card and download the driver to your desktop. Then run the downloaded file and follow the screen prompts. Also I did give you a link to graphics drivers on Assist-X, take a look, it might be helpful as there's also a list of the most common manufacturers there, click HERE to see.
  16. Yeah, very confusing indeed. There is one other possibility: It might have been a problem at your ISPs end, it is possible for an ISP to have connections to part of the internet only, it all depends on their backbone and the servers in between them and your destination server. I work in a UK University and our main internet gateway is JANET (Joint Accademic Network), sometimes a part of JANET goes down restricting certain blocks of sites.
  17. Sounds like the graphics drivers are corrupted, try re-installing them.
  18. And the Next MS OS you will be saying that is the enemy and that they should be using Vista ;)
  19. True, unless the other sites you were viewing were being pulled from your browsers cache (Not very likely though). Another possibility is the complete and accidental coincidence that http://www.runescape.com went down the same time as your update. Sites do have down times, and usually at the most inconvenient of times :?
  20. It's possible that the updates could have been a driver or a security fix that reset your IP stack (IP = Internet Protocol) or network. This could have killed your network until your PC obtained a new IP address.
  21. I think we all could go into how we would backup our own servers etc, but in the end sh*t happens. People have learnt some very hard lessons here and I think we need to move on, Tip.It crew must be feeling bad enough without us reminding them about it. Lets try and bring the board back up to its former glory and put this setback in the annals of the past. Whoever that guy who back stabbed Tip.It is should be totally ashamed of themselves. It was totally unprofessional and deserves to follow them around for a very very long time. Clare.
  22. Stopping processes via the task manager is not a solution, the next time you boot they will all still be there. I would advise the following: 1. Uninstall any programs you don't use. 2. Check the startup folder on your start menu and remove anything you don't need. 3. This next one can be tricky if you're not too happy with editing the registry, but these two keys are where most programs are launched from: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run Before deleteing any entries within the run sections, I would back them up by right clicking Run, and select export. Please note you can seriously screw up your PC by messing about with the registry, and I take no respocibility if you delete the wrong thing. ONLY remove entries from within the above two kays, anything else could be serious.
  23. That isn't a vista specific error, but 32 bit OS's can only use up to 3.5gb of ram. That is correct, a 32 bit OS can only address about 3.6Gb of Ram. If you want to use all 4Gb then you will need to use a 64Bit OS. I can see more people moving to 64 Bit because of this, and in a few years time I can also see 64 Bit OS's being the norm. By the way, the 64 Bit version of Vista isn't as bad as the 64 bit version of XP was. XP 64 Bit had a lot of problems with software compatibility, I think Vista 64 bit will run 32 bit applications so your only biggy is with drivers, and I think most manufacturers have 64 bit drivers available.
  24. Last two posters were correct! There's nothing wrong with Vista, it's a great OS. Just don't get any of the Basic versions as they don't allow you to use the Aero theme.
  25. You're not going to get that in XP as the audio architecture in XP is completely different. Vista's audio is a brand new system, the application audio levels is in the audio sub system. Vista even boasts much lower latency than the XP drivers, even lower than ASIO.
