Runescape Interview by MMORPG.com
Fairy Tale and Mahjarrat series, it has been said already that we wil get a Mahjarrat quest before the end of the year. Fairy tale and Elemental Workshop ;) Elemental was hinted by the Chaos Elemental in the postbag. But then it would be three quests.... seeing as we KNOW we will get a mahjarrat quest, and, judging by the latest blog, most likely will get a fairy quest by the end of the year...

Dev blog: Fairy Tale III
Am I the only one happy that Mod Tytn has taken over the project? =) For anyone who doesn't know, he's the developer of the Myreque series.

Dev blog: Fairy Tale III
A new Dev blog about the 3rd Fairy Tale quest has been released: [hide]Ive just finished the development work on Fairy Tale 3 and I should be happy, relieved and pleased with myself. But Im flummoxed, perplexed and generally vexed; the most challenging task is yet to be completed! A fairy quests subtitle is generally the most difficult thing to invent. This isnt as simple as it sounds - it requires a subtle, humorous, tantalising and yet revealing insight into the quest, but shouldnt give too much away. Perhaps I need to go on a course to improve my quest naming skills. This project has taken more than the usual number of twists and turns on its unique trip through production - let me explain. The initial developer, Mod Greg, passed the Fairy Tale quest series on to Mod Ingrid. Both developers did great work and created a wonderfully whimsical world. The honour of writing the code and developing Fairy Tale 3 from the design brief came my way and Ive done my best to realise Mod Ingrids vision for the final chapter of the Fairy Tale series. Military madness Fairy General One of the new characters in the quest has a slight tendency towards military speak and getting into this character and writing the dialogue has been very interesting. Having done some amateur dramatics and also experiencing the old school pencil-and-paper role-playing games, I know what a difference it can make to act the part in a story. Writing dialogue for characters can be fun, I really try to put myself in the place of the adventurer having to deal with this person and imagine the kind of verbal interaction that would happen. But at least I dont take my work home with me. For instance, its rare youll catch me barking orders to imaginary fairy soldiers - "Get into line, you numbskulls; weve got a job to do!" That never happens. Orkish military precision NOT the bosses Mod Chihiro mentioned in his Design Review blog that a significant element of this quest was the boss fight. He wrote, "designing a boss fight for this was challenging". Well, the boss fight certainly is challenging, not just from a players point of view, but very much from a coding perspective too. In this particular challenge, we really wanted to do something a bit different, really explore the tactical possibilities for a boss battle where the player has the choice about how to take out the enemies and which enemies to take out first. Yes, thats right, multiple hard and tough enemies, all of them not liking you very much, all at the same time. Dont worry, though, well give you a few allies, though they may be a bit long in the tooth. Initial feedback The project has completed development and is getting initial feedback. This means that QA and some of my RuneScape Content colleagues have written what they think of the project with an aim of making it better. Most of the comments have been positive, but its clear that more improvements are possible. Ive compiled this list of suggestions and have started implementing them into the code. That which doesnt kill a project only makes it stronger. Im enjoying this phase of development, seeing the slightly raggedy edges being polished and wrought into shape. Implementation What I really love about developing RuneScape projects is the mixture of different skill sets it requires. It requires a technical mindset to force this chaotic creativity into the very particular constraints of a binary computer system, and it needs creativity to solve those technical problems. So, heres a silly, but not too dissimilar example of a conversation I might have with myself: "Do I need to store all this information in so many variables, or can I just assume the player is going to do this specific thing?" "We can never assume anything of our players! Theyll always do something slightly odd that we hadnt expected." "Okay, so I have to use all these variables then? Seems like a bit of a waste for the end result?" "Hmm, maybe youre right; but what if you put a nice PINK FAIRY in that space there, wouldnt it look nice?" "Oh yeah! Yeah, it would... but hey, thats not answering the question..." "But it was a boring question, just store the information in another way!" "Yeah, but what other way?" "If you had a PINK FAIRY, right there, she could remind the player of all the stuff that you needed to store in those variables." "Oh yeah!" And, of course, Im sure that every other developer does exactly the same thing, and if they dont, they ought to. We want your feedback... Once all the initial feedback for the project has been implemented, the project will go into QA for a thorough testing. Ive already done a lot of my own testing, so Im hopeful that the few issues that QA always find will be minor. This is usually the point at which I start to get a little nervous, even though Ive developed content for years; this is the start of the countdown for the project being ready for release. And release means players, and players means feedback. I like to take a balanced approach to player feedback; read and accept all the positive comments and ignore anything negative - that works well for me! ;) But thats not exactly true, Im far too interested in doing better next time to ignore any critical comments, I always want to make my next quest the best quest ever!. NB: No PINK FAIRIES were harmed during the development of this blog. If you'd like to discuss this blog on the forums, please visit this forum thread.[/hide]

Post and discuss all Jagex Twitter updates here!
Google translation: Maybe Sherlock Holmes could find the teaser. It could be about Sliske, whose actions can be seen in world's smallest details, or about the "assalted" peanuts of the latest Chaos Elemental suitcase. We have been promised a quest next week. Some guy on Youtube found a pipe and a magnifying glass from RS models. "Verflucht" could be a hint, it also translates to "cursed". I'm almost sure this word is the most important. But as I'm not a member I don't know where the hint points to. Could be the follow -up of The curse of Arrav, seeing as we were promised the next Mahjarrat quest before the end of the year =)

Stellar Dawn scrapped, new one being developed
It was upon playing the full experience they realised it wasn't what they wanted it to be. I already knew this for a few days, from MS world, but I didn't realise the scope of it until now. It really gives me great faith in Jagex though <3 Seeing them being able to sacrifice this much because they want to make it the best it can be is truly admirable.

Adventurer's Log - Updated 18th November
175 days, 16 hours of playing time (surprised me it was that low) 21,7k xp per hour xD I need some help on when I started playing though. I distinctly remember the tutorial island, vannaka, the Survival tutor etc. But I really feel I've played longer than March 2004, when RS2 was launched. So was there a tutorial island before RS2 release? To my knowledge there wasn't, so I'm confused =/

Yeah, I was thinking that aswell. Cant wait. :P Halloween's always great. I remember them saying a long time ago that halloween was going to be great this year (prolly early summer or so), and we also saw those art pics of a lumbridge house in a dark lighting (four different dark color schemes they had been experimenting with). It will def be interesting to see what this turns out to be =)

RS Dev Blog : Within the Launch
[spoiler=Within the Launch]Within the Launch by Mod Chris L 16-Oct-2009 Within the Light is in the game now and this blog entry is to describe what a developer goes through in the later stages of a project's life cycle. This will cover taking a project from RC to LIVE and beyond. If you want to know the details of what goes on before this stage, have a read of Mod John A's blogs on the development of the recent dwarf quest (Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf). RC When the project is in WIP, development and QA can span across weeks or months. When the release date closes in, a certain Mod Nexus will copy it all to RC, as detailed in this blog, which is what will become the version of the game you all play following an update. This is usually done the week before release, so QA (and me!) had a very limited time to check through everything again and make sure Mod Nexus hasnt missed copying anything and that its all still bug-free! Release Next comes release! This is where it leaves our hands, really, and I get the most nervous! As the elven curator, and a fairly high-level player myself, I know how much prestige the elven quest line holds in players' eyes, so I was especially nervous. Not only because Within the Light was my first quest, but also because it had a lot to live up to. As I said, after release, it is generally a process of watching the forums, having an in-game presence and trying to gauge feedback on the content. Im happy to say the majority of the feedback Ive seen was very positive, and Im glad people enjoyed the puzzles. Why release this and what is to come? *Spoiler alert* The question that many seem to have is, "Why, after all these quests, do we still not have the city of Prifddinas?" The answer is one of time or, more specifically, resources. We know it has been years since Mourning's Ends Part II was released and there has still been no elven update in this time. The time between ME:II and Within the Light could have been spent creating resources (graphics, audio, code) to build the city - however, this would have been in place of us working on things like Summoning, While Guthix Sleeps, RuneScape HD or other such projects that require a lot of time to make assets for. While this update didnt bring the city with it, it did bring an important plot point to why its not quite where players thought it was. We released this quest as it had been years since ME:IIs release and players were missing the continuation of the quest series. It was also never planned to release the city with the quest that was to follow ME:II as it does not fit with the story we have planned. If you follow the quest line on the world map, it starts in Ardougne, snakes through the Underground Pass, through Isafdar, back to West Ardougne and then somewhat dead-ends at the Temple of Light. Within the Light was an important quest to not only refresh you of the whole story if you hadnt played it for years, but also to advance that story and show that it didnt actually come to a dead end at the Temple of Light at all! So, whats next for me post-release? Ive obviously got other projects on the go, one of which (not elf-related) I hope you all see and enjoy before the year is out! In regards to the elves, Ive got a rather large document of where Im aiming to take the series with the next quest. Again, as a RuneScape player capable of doing these quests, writing this document is particularly exciting, as I am writing something I cannot wait to play myself due to the scope and scale of it. I'm also getting input from a few other Mods here that are getting hooked on the story too, so we can all develop it into something that everyone will enjoy! Thanks for reading! P.S. Personally, I didnt save the gnome.
