In my middle and high school, I had one gym teacher for each. In middle school, I loved it, so much sports, it's competetive and fun. But then in high school, the teacher taught more than did excercise, we learned more about health, training programs, circuits. We did weight training, and dancing... And he was forced by the city to do a sport a year! O man, he chose sports that you wouldn't usually play. I guess he thought it was beneficial somehow, since sports like basketball, you can always play. We played team handball the 1st yr, whiffleball the 2nd yr, badminton the 3rd yr. Worse of all we had to do dancing. It was most of the yr, we did the tango, salsa, square dancing, and so much others... Also tae bo. I'd say students need P.E to keep in shape, It should teach how to stay in shape, when you're not in school anymore.
