Recommended Posts

Anyone got any good ideas? I've tried every way I can think of..

Counting sheep I just tend to give up to quickly.

Going to sleep earlier I just sit in bed until when I'd usually go to bed, and then some cus ive gotta headache, usually get caught up forcing myself to sleep..

Staying up till im tired usually takes me into the early morning , messin up my sleep pattern..

any ideas, Sleeping seems very complicated some days, it used to be as simple as just closing my eyes. Maybe I've got insomnia..?

im sure exercise would work, it would wear you out. getting up at a reasonable time, and keeping active throughout the day helps. on the weekends i sleep like crap, sleep a long time and still dont feel good the next day. during the 5 weekdays i am working and school from 8 in the morning to 9 at night, so i sleep a lot better. get about 2 hours less, but feel rested the next day. i still need to learn how to sleep better, if i dont get my 8 hours im screwed, no matter how good i sleep.

You could always read. Reading right before going to bed always makes my eyes tired, and I usually fall alseep at once after reading.

Best idea, and it makes you a tad smarter in the process :P

Read for about 30 minutes before bed or as long as you can stand before you start randomly skipping lines and you'll be ready to get some shuteye!

I usually have my radio on. Even if it is a hardrock station it's relaxing to me in a way. Dead silence at night is creepy.

This is bad advice... But being inebriated out your mind usually helps.

Dreaming of that face again

It's bright, and blue, and shimmering

Grinning wide

And comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes

I heard counting sheep does nothing to help you sleep. I think it actually keeps you awake.. lol.

Reading always tires me out. All the eye movement = tiredness. :D

oh thx guys, such a quick response, plus im off to bed now.. maybe i'll grab a book, does it have to be an interesting one or boring? Im guessin it'll keep me up if I get too interested..

I used to read a lot just before I went to bed, and for the most part it settled my mind so I could fall asleep. If I was really interested, it did keep me up. But if I was really interested, that was a good thing. Unless I really needed some sleep, in which case it was just a matter of forcing myself to shut the book.

Honestly, if you're just reading to bore yourself, you're basically just concentrating on something you don't like until you tire yourself out. Sounds like a waste to me :?

Best advice I can give you is to work your mind and body more during the day. If you really tire yourself out, you'll fall asleep no problem. Of course, that means work. But it feels good when it's over

An interesting book would probably be better. I mean... when you're tired, you're tired ;)

i had this problem (sorta) last summer.. i was staying up til 6 in the morning and not able to get to sleep til maby 7-8am... :| then i ended up waking up at about between 5-7 PM and repeating..

my solution

Stay up 24hrs... and then go to bed around 6-7pm... and your good to go..

TRUST ME

but staying up for 24. hrs straight = sickening OMG

but after you go to sleep regular.. you feel great after you wake up.

I really am not a fan of the sleeping pills thing - I know some friends who have been taking them for insomnia, and it really just messes them up. They don't have REM sleep and one of them started to hallucinate during the day and they don't feel like they've been sleeping at all in the morning. If all else fails, you can go to it, but IMO it should really be a last resort.

Yeah - the best thing to do is make sure you do relaxing things in the little while before you go to bed. Being on the computer is NOT included in that - that makes it more difficult to sleep. Reading or just listening to quiet music for about half an hour before sleeping is the generally accepted best way to do this.

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

Exercise during the day might help, but make sure you don't do anything active an hour before you go to sleep. That just gets you overly alert. Don't stare at any screens an hour before you want to go to bed either. Other than that, just anything calming or restful should help segway you into a good sleep. Goodnight, and see you again most likely when you have your next self-help type question. :P

Hmmmm, I find that excersise right before bed is really bad. It get's the blood pumping, and you get all heated up...

For me, I would say 2 things. Eat something...I'm not sure why, but I had problems sleeping up until about a month ago, now I always eat before bed and I never have problems (not once since I started)...Also, as an alternative to reading, try like, studying...Some nice biology or chemistry or something is like horse tranquilizers.

Best way I can get to sleep is to have done active stuff during the day.

Staring at a monitor or tv before you go to bed makes you not be able to get to sleep since it keeps your brain active. I do it all the time, but then I have trouble getting to sleep most times. I feel like my brain is still buzzing from the computer screen.

Some things you shouldn't do to try to get to sleep:

-Don't turn the radio or other noise maker on. Once you actually DO fall asleep, this noise maker will still be on. Even if it's on uber low, your ears will still pick up that faint sound. Your brain will try soo hard to pick up that sound and make it "work" or whatever. Causing you to be tired for tomorrow...

I used to have my radio on the lowest volume setting 24/7. I liked a little background noise when I went to bed because I couldn't fall asleep to the silence. It was a bad idea. I was always falling asleep in my classes and hated waking up everymorning and going to bed everynight. WHen I finally turned it off for the first night, it was like someone knocked me out. Lol, I was out like a light and felt great the next day. :D

-Excersize? Get's your blood flowing and you're all "up" even though you're trying to burn yourself out.

Might I suggest leaving a light on? Or maybe you should sleep in a public room in your house. I find that I never want to go to sleep in my own room. I'll snooze just fine infront of the TV in the living room. Or when I do have to sleep in my room, if I leave the light on I feel tired. But when its off im bouncing off the walls. Crazy stuff.

Oh, don't do the warm milk thing. For one, it tastes like crap, and milk curdles when it's heated?? o_O

I find it the colder the better. :P

I study psychology at university. The latest way that I've heard to get to sleep is to say 'now' in your head, at random intervals.

So.. you lay in bed thinking "now..... now... now.......... now................now.....now..." etc.

For most people insomnia is caused by thoughts which keep your brain active. Making random responses interrupts thought processes.

Sleeping pills don't give you 'normal' sleep, they simply knock you out. They are not recommended for anything long-term. Though I read recently [New Scientist: Subscriber account required to read the full article] about a new set of pills which can keep you awake and alert for 48 hours, and you won't have a sleep debt to pay off afterwards. But still, I'd personally view them with suspicion, since no one really knows what sleep does.

For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns.

The time when the living and the dead exist as one.

Yes it does help.

And no matter how much you hate him, listen to old John Mayer CDs, or The Dispatch, just some soft acoustic. It really helps. :P

I just remembered that there were a few suggestions on the Wikipedia article

* Decrease the light level in the sleeping environment. Studies have indicated that the brain has a separate neural pathway to the optical nerve, separate from the visual path, to detect whether it's day or night. This detection system could have a direct effect on successful sleep inducement. Moreover, other studies have shown sleep inducement is dramatically increased by reductions in light level, in the sleeping environment. Use appropriate curtains and shading to keep light out or at minimal levels.

* Set a quiet time approximately 30 minutes before bedtime̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ã
