  1. Is there a way to get an XP Pro CD other than using somebody else's? Also, its from six years ago-I haven't yet found any other disks besides MS Office and a Gateway system recovery disk-would a PC from six years ago have a actual disk or just the recovery one? I think you're right about the activation code thingy, but where do I find the number used to call Microsoft? They will give you the number when you are forced to activate by phone. If you found the Gateway recovery disk then you probably don't have the XP disk. You getting the original disk may be a problem. I don't know too much about this so your going to need somebody else to help you from here. I could point you where to download one and burn it to a cd, but you didn't hear that from me.
  2. Probably not and it's unlikely that you can find a working keylogger that would do this for you without you keylogging yourself. Not to mention it's illegal.
  3. Try this before I suggest anything else. Right click on my computer > properties > advanced tab > start up and recovery settings > uncheck automatically restart under system failure.
  4. Does the blue screen just say Windows stop error? Give the exact error code. Write it down next time it happens. Have you scanned for viruses and spyware? Ad-aware and Spybot are good free spyware scanners and AVG is a good free virus scanner.
  5. Blue screen of death. The most general thing you can give about your problem. To top it off you gave no information like your system specs, what you were doing when it happened, the actual error message ect.
  6. It's legal to do so if you uninstall the OS from your old computer (just not using the old computer ever again would be fine). Although there is one problem with that, the XP from your old computer is an OEM copy. An OEM copy of an operating system means that it's meant for a certain set of hardware and should not be moved. All you would have to do is when you install it on your new PC you will need to call Microsoft up and get an activation code and say it's on 1 PC. You will also need an XP Pro cd, not a recovery cd from your old computer, most computers now come wist recovery/restore disks and not the original XP disk. It is also perfectly legal to use somebody else's cd and use your cd key.
  7. Well that's definitely slower than what your supposed to be getting. Try resetting your modem and your router. Unplug them and wait a couple of minutes then plug them back in, don't use the reset switch (if they have one).
  8. New England 38-24. The Colts are no match for the Patriots this year. Anybody remember that tons of people were saying that the Cowboys game was going to be close too? :P Look how that turned out.
  9. I'm looking for an AGP card, which is why I've looked at the 7600GT, because that is one of the best options for AGP in my budget. (X1950pro and 7900gs are too exy). I mainly play games like Counter Strike:Source, and Bioshock and TF2 when I get them. The MSI card comes in at $150 Australian ($138US) The Leadtek card comes in at $135 Australian ($124US) @Joe. The MSI link must be down. I went to their site and to the cards page, but got an error also. Ahh, it's always good to post that you need an AGP card in the first post , and that it needs to9 be from someplace in Australia. Well counter strike is nothing for a graphics card now a days. Your card will play Bioshock at low to medium settings.
  10. Well what first person shooters do you play? Some prices on those graphics cards would be nice too. If the 7600GT is over $120, then it's not worth it, they are starting to show their age. You can get a lot better card for the money now. Give us a budget to suggest some other cards too.
  11. Well i play guild wars on it (i have for about a year now). I don't do filesharing. All i use it for are for uploading vids to youtube, playing runescape and playing guild wars. But it seems fine now. If your computer seems fine to you, then don't upgrade :) . It's that simple. If in a little while you do want some more speed then you could upgrade to 1-2GBs of ram.
  12. That's because you're a girl. Your parents trust you more. Um, Lionheart is a guy.
  13. What do you mean? Don't listen to him, there's always something you can do to fix your computer. He just has a habit of when he has no idea what's wrong, he blames Windows.
  14. Well it depends on what your using your computer for. If the only thing you do is go online and playing runescape, then no. If you do anything else then an upgrade to 1-2GBs of ram would greatly improve performance. EDIT: Mind telling us what you do with your computer?
  15. I like how you think you won the argument with your one sided views. You need to open your mind to both sides of opinion. You don't realize that your warped judgment is ruining your IT helpfulness. You can't work in IT and have a one sided judgment of things or you will be fired. You need to think of the good and the bad with each.
  16. I suggest you to not take it not take it to bestbuy or another store to get it checked for spyware. You can do that all from home for free using snoop free ,ad-aware, and spybot.
  17. I have not been sucked in. Infact I like Apple and Linux better, but I'm sick of people bashing Microsoft for no reason and giving their opinion as fact or just giving flat out lies. You try to write an operating system that has millions of lines of code and see if you can come even come close to as functional as Windows is. You have no idea how hard it is to have something work on millions of computers that will work and have no bugs, it's impossible. Look, if you want to sprew your crap about stuff that you have no idea about, take it somewhere else. I am sick of you giving false and flat out wrong information.
  18. [begin swear]Damn.[End swear] They changed it in FF2 and later then! (I'll bet the term change was due to MicroSoft getting their grimy mitts into the FireFox stuff! :x ...)[/b[ ~Mr. Devnull What is with you and bashing Microsoft every chance you get? There was no reason to even bring that up. You pretty much don't have a valid argument against them, in any thread. I guess your just hoping on the bandwagon of thinking that hating Microsoft is "cool."
  19. The reason why there are so many security flaws because people are looking for them. If Microsoft didn't have 90% market share then they would not be exploited. Hackers want to target the most users, which is Windows. If Linux or Mac OS X was #1 then they probably would have the same amount of problems. No, the reason there are so many security flaws in windows is because the programmers at MicroSoft aren't fully checking their code and writing it properly before it goes out the door to the consumer. The hackers (both white-hat and black-hat) and other security companies are just simply running into the security flaws after the fact, but the fault is with the original code programmers at MicroSoft. You're right, though, in saying that these flaws wouldn't be so heavily targeted if Windows wasn't #1 in market share. However, don't go placing the blame for the beginning mistakes that are in Windows in the wrong place. The blame for the beginning mistakes is MicroSoft's alone. ~Mr. D. V. Devnull Your thinking is seriously flawed. Do you really think that one of the largest companies in the world would sit back and have lazy and/or bad programmers working for them? Nobody is perfect and people make mistakes. If they could go over every line of code in windows to double check it, then it would take double the amount of time between releases and then they still will not catch too many more. I bet you would say the same thing if another company making operating systems was on top. Apple usually releases more security fixes per month than Microsoft.
  20. Oh it recognized the disk and started booting? You didn't mention that in your first post  . Well if you have another computer try the disk in there and see if it gets past the part where it gets frozen, if it does, then it's the disk.
  21. Have you tried in another internet browser? Have you tried disabling your firewall and see if you can get on? Make sure you re-enable it afterwards.
  22. I'm not clare but I'm going to rant at you (again). 1GB of ram is more than enough for XP SP2. XP SP2 should not use anymore ram than SP1. Do not give bad advice. You preach about knowing tons about computer security (in numerous other threads) then suggest SP1? That will make his computer vulnerable to 100s of security exploits and probably make his computer slower because of all the preventable viruses he will get. Plus Microsoft does not support XP SP1 anymore, only SP2.
  23. The reason why there are so many security flaws because people are looking for them. If Microsoft didn't have 90% market share then they would not be exploited. Hackers want to target the most users, which is Windows. If Linux or Mac OS X was #1 then they probably would have the same amount of problems.
  24. Well to me in would just be easier to un-install firefox and re-install it. Make sure your bookmarks are backed up. (bookmarks > organize bookmarks > file > export) (do the same but click import when re-installing them)
  25. You don't know that the snooping is usually automated? ... I've heard the RIAA and MPAA actually provide programs to go snooping around, and they'll wipe out anything containing certain words or phrases, both in the file, as well as in the file name. These programs also wipe out files based on data characteristics too. And then to finish it all off, they send home copies of so-called "proof that someone is breaking the law" back to their makers. :( In short, consumer gets [bleep]-ed, and RIAA/MPAA get to be a bunch richer because you're left unable to defend yourself. Heck, Sony's rootkit was one way they did this. :( I'm going to ask, however, that we don't side-track out this alleyway. It would go too far off-topic. ~Mr. Devnull Well I'm going to side track this because that is all false information. First of all that thing about the RIAA is all propaganda. As much as I hate those guys, they can't just go into anybody's computer and start snooping. Second of all, it's illegal and a large corporation would be caught fairly easily doing it. They would never be able to pull this off, they know nothing about computers, you would know this if you read some of their arguments on the lawsuits. BTW they know you downloaded songs not by snooping but by the actual site releasing your IP (kazaa). The Sony rootkit was not there to spy on you, it was there to protect their property from being copied. The big deal about this when people found out was that it hid any file in $"filename"$ (which includes many legit windows folders) tags and that it was installed without consumers knowledge. Come on, don't give false info on the subject. Fact check it before you do, or atleast make sure it's close to correct.
